The Chef Who Crossed Worlds

The Visit 1

The Visit 1

Oct 30, 2025

It was like standing under sunlight and ice at the same time. Not loud. Not angry. Just aware. Consort Lian was not guessing. She had already decided Mia mattered. She was now only confirming how much

Mia lifted her head slowly to the level Lin had taught her not too high not challenge not too low not weak. She used the practiced calm face. The small respectful smile. The I am only kitchen smile

“Your name” Consort Lian said

Mia’s mouth felt dry. “Mia” she said softly “Mia Torres”

One of the attendants shifted when she heard the last name. Consort Lian’s eyes flicked with interest almost hidden “That is not a name from any of the provinces”

Mia kept her shoulders relaxed “I was told I come from far south Consort”

“Who told you that” Consort Lian asked

Mia lowered her gaze just a little “Head Chef Zhu Consort. I only repeat what I am told. I follow orders from the kitchen. My hands only move because he guides me”

Lin almost sighed out loud in relief

Zhu did not move but Mia could feel the tension in him ease by a thread

Consort Lian watched Mia for a long moment. She was still smiling but Mia now understood that the smile was not softness. It was a curtain over calculation. She was not seeing Mia as a girl. She was measuring Mia as a possible blade

“I heard” Consort Lian said lightly “that His Majesty allowed you to serve him alone last night”

The kitchen air dropped in temperature. Mia could feel the way everyone tensed without moving. She could even feel Lin stop breathing

This was the test. Mia knew it

If she said yes that would imply closeness with the Emperor. Claiming closeness with the Emperor was a death wish

If she said no that would imply that Consort Lian had been misinformed which would insult Consort Lian and that was also a death wish

So Mia kept her voice low even and simple

“I only did what His Majesty asked Consort. I am only kitchen”

Consort Lian tilted her head a fraction. “And what does His Majesty ask of you little Mia who comes from the far south”

Mia felt her heartbeat in her hands now

Careful

Careful

Careful

“He asks for warmth in a bowl” Mia said softly “I try not to fail him”

The smallest pause. Then a soft hum from Consort Lian’s throat

Warmth in a bowl

Not joy
Not comfort
Not peace
Not softness

Not anything that sounded like I am giving him what you cannot give

Warmth in a bowl sounded harmless. Domestic. Almost boring

Lin very very quietly exhaled

Consort Lian took one slow step closer. She was now directly in front of Mia. Close enough that Mia could smell her perfume. Light floral and something cool like tea at night. Close enough that Mia could see how smooth her skin was even under the lantern light. Close enough that Mia could feel how dangerous she was

“Look at me” Consort Lian said gently

Mia lifted her gaze to meet her eyes but only for a breath before lowering it slightly again so it did not read like challenge. She hoped it was right. She hoped she was not leaking fear

Consort Lian studied her expression the way a jeweler studies a stone

“So” she said. “You are the warmth now”

The words were soft and sweet

But every person in the kitchen heard the warning in them

Warmth is nice
Warmth is useful
But warmth is also easy to smother

Mia felt the meaning sink into her bones

She knew then that this woman could destroy her without ever raising her voice

It would take nothing

A whisper
A flick of silk
A slight tilt of her mouth

Mia swallowed and kept her tone steady

“I am only kitchen” she repeated

Something like approval flickered over Consort Lian’s face then disappeared so fast Mia almost thought she imagined it

Good girl the look had said
Good girl stay in the corner where I put you

Consort Lian turned away. “Head Chef Zhu” she said in her soft bright voice “I expect that this new hand will not forget her place. A hand that forgets its place sometimes slips. Slips cause accidents. I would hate to see any accidents in the inner kitchen. His Majesty values you so highly. It would break my heart to see you blamed for an accident”

Zhu bowed so low Mia thought his forehead might hit the floor. “Consort Lian is generous to warn us. I will watch her closely”

“I am pleased” Consort Lian said

She moved toward the exit again and her attendants flowed after her like water. Just before she reached the doorway she paused and glanced back one last time. Her gaze landed on Mia like a fingertip pressed to the center of her chest

“Pretty eyes” she said softly almost amused “Keep them lower”

Mia felt her face burn

Lin made a tiny choking sound

Zhu did not react at all

Consort Lian left

The door closed

And the kitchen finally breathed

Zhu stayed frozen for three long seconds. Then he straightened and let out a rough breath from deep in his chest like he had been punched there. “We lived” he muttered “We lived. We lived. We are not dead. Good. Excellent. I will allow it”

Lin grabbed Mia by both shoulders and whispered very fast “You did not die. You did not get me killed. You did not get Chef killed. You did not get yourself dragged out by your hair. That was amazing. I am going to steal an orange from dry storage to celebrate. Stay here. Do not speak to anyone. Do not move. Do not blink too fast. I will be right back”

She bolted

Mia just stood there

Her knees felt weak. Her hands were cold. She realized only now that she had not fully breathed for the last several minutes

She sat slowly on a low stool and let the air out of her lungs one careful inch at a time

Warmth in a bowl she had said

But the truth hit her hard now

She was not warmth to them

She was leverage

She was threat

She was bait

And if she made one wrong move she would not be here long enough to cook again

Zhu lowered himself onto the stool across from her. He leaned forward his elbows on his knees his voice low so no one else could hear

“Listen to me Mia” he said

She looked up at him

“You did well. You listened. You stayed small. You did not claim anything. That kept you alive. But you need to understand this. When she looks at you she is not only seeing you. She is seeing what the Emperor lets near him. She is seeing what he protects. If he protects you she has to decide whether you are worth removing or worth using”

Mia swallowed “Which one am I”

Zhu gave a humorless smile “We will find out soon”

Mia let her shoulders drop. “Chef”

“Yes”

“I am scared”

“I would be worried if you were not” he said

A quiet laugh slipped out of her then shaky and tired. “Lin said I should pick staying alive as my main goal. I am trying. I really am”

Zhu nodded once. “Good. Keep trying. New rule. You are never alone. Not in the hall. Not in the storage rooms. Not even to get water. You are not to walk anywhere unguarded. If someone asks you to follow them you say Head Chef Zhu needs me right now and I cannot leave without permission. Say it with apology. Not defiance. Do you understand”

“Yes Chef” Mia said softly

He leaned back and rubbed his face with both hands. “I knew this kitchen would kill me one day. I just did not think it would be warm soup that did it”

Mia let out another quiet breath. Her pulse was finally beginning to slow

Lin ran back and pressed a peeled orange segment into Mia’s hand as if it were treasure. “Here. Eat. Your blood needs sweetness. Also I am proud of you. You survived Consort Lian. That means you get to live today”

Mia took the fruit. It tasted bright and clean and real on her tongue

Today she lived

Tomorrow was not promised here

But today she lived

She held that truth like a bowl in both hands and did not let it spill
