I walk in with Firefly on my shoulder. A dragon at the head of the room, who looks like they're fully made up of geometric angles, gestures to a seating chart rolled out at the front of a room.
"Hello, Scarlet! Welcome to 6C. Take a look at the seating chart and see where you're going to sit for now!"
"Hey, don't forget me!" Firefly pipes up from my shoulder.
"Oh, welcome, Firefly! We have a spot for you at that table there. You'll be sitting with Scarlet and a few others.
Firefly and I find our way to the table. I sit on the fabric-puffed stone chair for my spot, and Firefly glides her way to what looks like a minature version of the classroom chairs that rests on my part of the table. A tiny stone slab with legs acts as a small desk for her. We watch as more dragons file into the room. There's Lotus's daughter, that dragon that looks like darkness, the one that was gilded with gold, and a bunch of others. The dark dragon wordlessly sits down at the table, and another dragon that looks like the sky with a grey tint sits next to her. The tables are arranged so that four dragons can sit at two rectangular tables joined together.
"Okay!" the geometric dragon announces. "I'm Binomial of the Geometric family. You can call me Instructor Binomial. I like figuring out complicated math problems in relation to our world. I also like trading Koppis. Now, can each of us go in turns and say our names, and something we like to do?"
Lotus's daughter perks up. "Can I go first?"
"Of course," Instructor Binomial answers.
"Hi, I'm Reverie. I like debating, and I'm hoping I can finally find a match for my crazy argument skills!"
The gold gilded dragon goes next. "I'm Aureate. I like my couch, I suppose.
I try to keep my face neutral, but Firefly flutters up to my ear, whispering "What kind of a name is Aureate?" and I nearly lose it. I'm too busy keeping all of the hysterical giggles at bay to notice the next few dragons that speak. Then it's that sky dragon's turn.
"Er, hi. I'm Ciel. I like flying, even when it's rainy." She looks over at the dark dragon.
"I'm Midnight. I like stormy nights and pitch-black caves. Don't bug me and I won't bug you."
I go next. "I'm Scarlet. I like sleeping in and having my siblings out of the house."
A lot of other dragons laugh at that, and I spot a few nodding. Firefly goes next, and even though her voice box is probably the size of an ant, the whole room can hear her.
"I'm Firefly. I like sky-dancing, and it doesn't matter if I'm watching it or doing it."
"Thank you, everyone!" Instructor Binomial says with a smile on her face. "Now, let's get to talking about math!"
Scarlet of the Pyroflare family is just trying to navigate the ups and downs of becoming a teenage dragon, when she discovers that she's not just a regular fire dragon after all. Instead, she's an Emberwrym, the most powerful kind of fire dragon in the world-and the last of her kind. But will she manage to get through middle school with her powerful new abilities? Or will her raging flames get the better of her?
