I looked terrible. My usually clear blue eyes were dull, and beneath them were large dark circles from exhaustion. My dark blonde hair stuck out messily in all directions, and my skin looked paler than usual. The little food I had consumed in the past few days hadn't been enough to prevent my ribs from being visible, something I confirmed with a quick glance under my clothes. I knew it was wise to rest and recover so I could regain my strength, but while I sat, protected and cared for, in the cave, the bear was out there attacking other villages and killing anything that came its way. That was when I made my decision: I would go back into the forest, find the bear, and kill it. If I climbed a tree and caught it off guard, I wouldn’t have to strain my leg. Yes. Tomorrow night, I would set out, take some of the supplies, and use them as bait. I felt a bit guilty about wanting to take some of the hard-earned supplies, but I told myself that once the bear was gone, all these people would have enough food again. If the bear was gone, they could return to their village. I would succeed! For all the desperate people here, for my uncle, for Dante. I left the wooden part and went back to the main cave. My uncle had set up a small sleeping area for me—he had even found a blanket made of sheepskin and a candle for me. A warm feeling rose in me when I saw it. The love for my family only strengthened my resolve. Dante deserved to live a long and beautiful life, and I wouldn’t let the bear destroy that. But first, I needed sleep. A lot of sleep.
