Nine Lives

Part 4: Wallace(1)

Part 4: Wallace(1)

Nov 03, 2025

Under the familiar cover of the night, the man trekked through the path surrounded by trees. His footsteps silent against the ground, his stride careful but purposeful. He was not bothered by the lack of nature ambiance, no croaking from frogs, no rustling of leaves or bushes or nocturnal animals moving about. No-his surroundings were dead silent, as if the forest was holding its breath as he passed through.

As if they were prey hiding from a predator.

Wallace was amused at the thought of his presence being strong enough to scare the animals on this island. It was as if they could tell he wasn't one to be messed with.

Smart things, Wallace smirked as the trail he was following began to open up, too bad the animals back home had to learn the hard way.

Wallace stopped and stared up at the dark gate looming above him. The ends were sharp enough to impale a person or animal straight through like a pointy stick in a marshmallow. Fortunately, there was no reason to climb such a gate as the doors were open enough for Wallace to easily slip through.

Wallace grunts as he feels a tingle against his elbow, pulling away his arm that brushed against the gate. He massaged his elbow, narrowing his eyes at the gate door with a mixture of amusement and annoyance. Wallace may not be a regular visitor or follower of any religious space but he did not expect a church of all places to have an electric gate with sharp top rails.

Then again, the older man glanced behind him towards the manor, this is not a traditional place of worship.

From what Wallace has researched, this was the only church dedicated to the god of death and the goddess of judgement. Though the older man could care less about the judgement part, it was the death part he was more interested in. However there wasn't a lot of information regarding the church other than the name of the head priest , the godly patrons, the hours of operation, how to contact the church and the most important part-the services provided by the head priest himself.

With a grin, Wallace began walking towards the manor. The brick building was three stories high, all the windows were dark and not a single light could be seen either inside or outside. It was silent here, as if the residents of the building were either dead asleep or simply gone. None of this deterred him however as he calmly approached the double doors. Wallace looked around for a doorbell of some sorts but found none.

Guess I'll just have to knock, Wallace thought as he reached to grab one of the knockers on the double doors.

Wallace stepped back when one of the doors slowly creaked open before he could touch the knocker, narrowing his eyes at the exposed interior of the manor through the door. It was dark inside, only the floor being faintly visible and no sign of anyone opening the door for him. Wallace didn't even hear any footsteps from inside heading towards the door. It was as if the door opened by itself.

Wallace ignored the goosebumps lining his skin as he forced himself to remain calm and carefully stepped across the threshold. He couldn't afford to show any signs of weakness in strange territory, it was best to act as if he wasn't bothered-unmoved. Though Wallace did not let down his guard at all, the strangeness of his environment now slowly started to register in his mind.

Perhaps there is another hunter here, hiding amongst the shadows-waiting for Wallace to make one wrong move before moving in for the kill? No, Wallace simply could not give anything the satisfaction of turning him into a victim, a helpless pathetic convenient prey.

If worse comes to worst, Wallace could simply kill the priest and escape into the night. Of course ensuring there was no way of tracing anything back to him and once he made it back home, it would be downright impossible for the authorities to track Wallace down.

The older man smiled at the comforting thought but it twitched as the door closed behind him without any assistance. He glanced behind him, his hand reaching into his coat pocket but as he unfortunately expected- no one was there. It was still just Wallace, standing alone in the entryway. Before him was a staircase that hugged the left wall, going up to the floor above him, beside it was a door. On either side of him were two doorways leading into two separate rooms. There were no candles or lights on so Wallace couldn't make out too much detail of his surroundings other than the stairs, the door and the doorways. He slowly pulled his hand away from his pocket, debating on whether he should go upstairs or look around on the current floor when he heard a voice above him.

"You must be Mr. Hilt."

Wallace snapped his head towards the source of the voice, forcing a smile on his face as there was now a figure standing at the top of the previously empty stairway.

"I'm sorry but you are..?"
