“It’s my choice, not yours. Either respect it or destroy it.”
-Nil
Setting keepsakes and the Maquette school on fire may be a sign that Nil hasn’t calmed down. It certainly drives Bernard mad since he was a happy graduate of the school himself, and he lets Nil know it every step of the way to the Cache District. Rebecca had been dumbfounded when Savio Gennari threw himself into the social world at the side of Ebner Beiler, the overseer of the Cache District. Bernard shudders at the sound of that name, then freezes altogether when they seek out the main warehouse where Ebner is likely to be. Nil leaves Avery and the others to deal with the puppet demon guards so he can work through magic-laced traps in peace.
Inside the warehouse are several contraptions welded together into a single monstrous machine, or an ‘Infernal’ Machine to be exact. Its purpose is to birth unholy creatures like puppet demons and living artworks, but it’s odd that this one only uses the flesh of human corpses. The Golden Child clockwork diorama pulls still living bodies out from frozen storage and kills them right before they’re fed to the Machine. It doesn’t seem to care if the more precious souls float their way into a mirror or get lost through the window. It’s far more important to keep producing puppet demons in a nice orderly manner.
Armed with magic tools and a contract with the dead, Nil arrives in the glamorous city of Harz to find the family that he lost. By day the local citizens happily prepare for their annual art festival, but by night their displays come to life in order to steal their dreams. Death awaits those who dare to interfere, but that’s not a problem for Nil in more ways than one.
