“Tell me who better knows the truth, the protagonist of the story or the reader of the tale.”
-Rebecca Ansolm
Hilda comes upon Rebecca in a very bad state. Nil’s potion won’t kill her but she can’t stop seeing the differences between her memories of Nil’s life and his own. Hilda comes dangerously close to putting his auto-resurrection to the test and confronts Nil about his identity. He admits knowing from the start that the mirror woman was her dearest friend. He did cause Rosalind’s death back in the Gennaris’ hometown of Turin. He is the one called Isaac’s imposter. Following his confession, Nil poisons Hilda so she will slowly and surely lose her physical strength.
Savio is speaking as though his son is right there in the room and no, he’s not insane. The soul of his son Isaac has been bound to the Lost Boy wax doll that stays by Savio’s side until the resurrection ritual is done. Dimitri refuses to be of help since no true knight would be involved with forbidden magic, and he isn’t sure who the real Isaac may be. A disappointed Savio puts him to sleep using a Little Dreamer phonograph, sending Dimitri on a journey through the life of Isaac Gennari.
Armed with magic tools and a contract with the dead, Nil arrives in the glamorous city of Harz to find the family that he lost. By day the local citizens happily prepare for their annual art festival, but by night their displays come to life in order to steal their dreams. Death awaits those who dare to interfere, but that’s not a problem for Nil in more ways than one.
