“I don’t know! I don’t know! I don’t know! Why does everyone always think I’d know what I did or what I can do? Why are they so angry when I don’t know? It’s nothing but the truth!”
-Bernard
Avery snipes at the Laced Cradle mural from afar and remembers to send Ebner-Awe scrambling for cover as the Gennaris slip away under the protection of Isaac’s wax. Bernard is pushed into leading the spirits of Harz in setting fire to every Childhood’s Hour painting in the city, sabotaging the Little Dreamer phonographs, and avoiding the temptation of their bodies-turned-puppet demons. Nil tricks Ebner-Awe into drawing out a magic circle that causes the man’s body to cannibalize itself.
Savio sends out puppet demons to stop Nil from entering the Monad Grand Theater but is countered by Avery’s cover fire. Nil taunts the Gennaris with a challenge: Order Isaac, the Lost Boy wax doll, to kill the fake Isaac. As a Infernal Machine-made artwork Isaac will have no choice but to obey. Savio dismisses the idea at first, then gives in to his wife’s plea to settle her nerves on the matter. The command is given and Isaac promptly heads for the nearest fire to melt himself down.
Armed with magic tools and a contract with the dead, Nil arrives in the glamorous city of Harz to find the family that he lost. By day the local citizens happily prepare for their annual art festival, but by night their displays come to life in order to steal their dreams. Death awaits those who dare to interfere, but that’s not a problem for Nil in more ways than one.
