The Keeper From Another World

Preparing the Keepers’ Team

Preparing the Keepers’ Team

Nov 07, 2025

Sunrise came with a pale weak glow that barely cut through the heavy clouds. The village felt different now. People moved with quiet urgency. Tools were gathered. Food was prepared. Guards sharpened blades even though no one knew if weapons would matter against something buried beneath the roots. Everyone sensed the forest breathing with uneasy rhythm. Even the air tasted strange, like old stone and damp earth.

Ethan left the shelter early. The wolf followed him for a few steps before stopping at the doorway, glowing faintly as if wishing it could walk with him. The giant bird stood tall inside the shelter and watched him leave with one large eye. The bark creature pressed its wooden forehead against the ground in a gesture Ethan did not fully understand yet but it felt like a promise of trust.

At the village square the elder waited with Mira and three villagers Ethan had not seen before. Mira explained with clear simple words. One man was a scout who knew the forest paths better than anyone. Another was a young mage whose magic was weak but steady and focused. The third was a healer who specialized in deep forest remedies. All three had volunteered to join Ethan even though they knew the journey would be dangerous.

The elder placed his hands on Ethan’s shoulders and spoke a slow steady blessing. Mira translated softly. He spoke of guardianship and intention, of walking the woods with a calm heart, and of listening to the signs the creatures gave more than the words humans shouted. Ethan nodded. He felt the weight of the role but also the strength behind it.

The hunter stood at the edge of the gathering with crossed arms and narrowed eyes. He said nothing at first but when Ethan passed by he muttered that the journey was pointless. He claimed that all glowing beasts eventually turned hostile when their magic grew unstable. Ethan ignored him. He had seen more kindness from creatures than from that man.

Mira helped Ethan pack supplies. She filled his pouch with dried herbs and small vials of liquid made from crushed roots. She explained that some were for wounds, some for calming, and some for stabilizing magical surges. She pressed the last vial into his hand and held it there for a moment. She told him to return alive. Her voice shook a little.

Ethan placed his hand over hers and nodded. He wanted to say the same to her but the words did not come out. Instead he pressed the small wooden charm she had given him against his chest and she understood.

The team set out when the sun was barely above the horizon. The path into the woods felt heavier than before. The scout led them with careful steps. The young mage kept his hands close to the forest floor to sense the changes in the roots. The healer stayed near Ethan watching the trees closely. She said the bark felt wrong, as if the forest had fever.

As they walked deeper Ethan noticed animals watching from the shadows. Small creatures with glowing eyes. Birds perched silently on branches. Even insects moved in strange patterns. The mage whispered that he felt a slow pulse under the earth like something alive pressing upward.

They passed the glowing stream again. This time the water pulsed faster with heat rising from its surface. The scout hesitated but Ethan kept moving. He needed to reach the lake. He needed to see the ancient creature again.

When they reached the lake a thick fog drifted across the water. The glow shone through like light under thin skin. Ethan stepped forward with the carved staff in his hand. The healer gasped quietly. The mage’s eyes widened.

The ancient creature was already waiting.

Its massive shell rose from the water with slow labored movement. The roots covering it pulsed in uneven patterns. The creature’s head lifted and its glowing eye fixed on Ethan. He felt the same deep sorrow in its gaze. It groaned softly in recognition.

Ethan stepped closer and placed a hand against its shell. The energy under his palm flickered weakly like an old flame struggling against wind. The healer placed her hand beside his. The creature sighed a low rumble that shook the lake.

The mage shook his head in shock. He said the energy was unstable because something deeper underground was pushing through the roots. Something ancient like the creature but far less gentle.

The scout pointed to the far edge of the lake where roots twisted unnaturally upward like claws. The forest shook lightly. A faint hum rolled through the ground. The hunter’s warnings echoed in Ethan’s mind but he pushed them aside. Fear without understanding meant nothing.

Ethan leaned close to the giant creature and whispered softly. The creature blinked once slowly then lowered its head to the ground. It was asking for help or offering trust. Ethan could not tell. But he knew one thing.

The disturbance was growing.
And the ancient creature was weakening.
If it fell the forest would fall with it.

He turned to the team and nodded.
They would go deeper than the lake.
They would follow the roots to the heart of the disturbance.
Even if the forest shook harder with each step.
