The entrance to the fifth echo lay beyond a stretch of broken stone plateau shaped by wind and age. Nolan felt a throbbing in his arms from the storm memory he had absorbed earlier the faint silver glow hidden under his skin like a dormant ember. Kaelun sensed it too staying close them both moving in a cautious rhythm.
As they walked the land transitioned from hard cliffs into a strange wide valley where the ground seemed to breathe. Every few steps the soil lifted gently and lowered again like lungs expanding. Nolan crouched and touched the ground. The surface felt warm pulsing under his palm.
Kaelun watched him.
Do not fear the shifting breath It is the land remembering before it became solid

The wind here moved strangely. Each gust carried a sound like a long sigh distant and low. Nolan felt uneasy but also strangely calm at the same time like the land shared its rhythm with him.
They passed tall stone columns that bent slightly inward though there was no force acting on them. The shapes made Nolan think of ancient ruins frozen mid motion but Kaelun explained quietly.

They walked deeper until the valley widened into a circular field. Thin trails of dust floated upward forming shapes that resembled wings before dissolving again.

Before Nolan could speak the ground ahead opened into a soft crater filled with shimmering light.
Kaelun lowered its head.
The fifth echo
Nolan stepped closer. Inside the crater the air rippled like a heat mirage but cooler. He kneeled beside it and felt the temperature shift across his fingers.
What do I do this time
Let it breathe with you Kaelun said
That sounds vague
Echoes cannot be forced They mirror the heart
Nolan closed his eyes and inhaled slowly. He let the rhythm of the valley pulse through him. Each breath he took matched the rise and fall of the ground.
The shimmering air responded
It formed into a wave rising gently then collapsing like a sigh.
When Nolan opened his eyes he stood not in the valley but in a memory shaped from both worlds.
He saw a large creature lying wounded in a field its chest rising slow and weak. He saw himself kneeling beside it offering help even though he knew the injury might be fatal. He saw the moment he realized he could not save it and the sorrow that followed.

Instead he placed his hands on the creature in the vision exactly as he had done years earlier.

Kaelun turned its head toward the darkening horizon
At the border of nightfall In the land where light ends
Nolan nodded through the fear gripping his chest

Kaelun crouched letting him climb on
