The Counselor From Another Realm

Voices in the Dark Forest

Voices in the Dark Forest

Nov 07, 2025

Daniel followed Elara through the guild courtyard as rain thinned into a mist. The demon child walked between them keeping her head low. Her small steps were quick and nervous like she expected hands to reach from the shadows and drag her away. Daniel kept his pace slow and steady letting her match him without feeling rushed.

The guild master had ordered that the girl be kept in a guarded room but Daniel insisted she needed open air and safety not confinement. After some tense silence the master agreed with a reluctant nod. So now they were walking toward the eastern gate where a small protected grove stood under the watch of guild scouts.

Elara tightened her cloak around her shoulders. This grove is safer than the city she said. The trees here are old enough to calm some kinds of magic. But keep your guard up. If something is stirring along the border it could reach even this place.

Daniel looked at the sky. Heavy clouds rolled low but did not release more rain. The air felt unnaturally thick. Not with weather but with feeling. A heavy quiet like thousands of unspoken fears pressed together.

The demon child whispered They hear us. They always hear us.

Daniel glanced down at her. Who hears us.

She hesitated then said The ones in the dark. They live between the borders. They wait in places where fear is loudest. They speak through dreams. They push humans to fear demons and demons to fear humans. They feed on the panic.

Elara slowed her steps. How do you know this.

The girl hugged her arms tighter. Because they tried to speak to me. But I ran. I hid in the trees. I tried not to listen. But fear is loud. It calls them.

They reached the grove a circle of ancient trees with thick twisting branches that looked almost like arms reaching to protect those inside. A faint warm glow drifted through the leaves like soft lantern light. Daniel knelt so the girl could sit on a fallen log. Her eyes darted everywhere scanning for shapes only she could see.

Daniel spoke gently You are safe here. No one will take you anywhere. You can breathe as long as you need.

The girl closed her eyes taking slow shaky breaths. Elara watched her quietly hands resting on the hilt of her short blade. Not out of suspicion but out of protectiveness.

Daniel felt a strange pull in the air. A faint hum like distant whispers brushing the edge of hearing. He stood and walked a short distance deeper into the grove. The air shifted. Something cold pressed against his mind. Not like a voice. More like an echo. A feeling that did not belong to him.

Elara noticed his posture and stepped beside him. Do you feel something.

Daniel nodded slowly. Fear. But not mine. Not hers. Something scattered. Something reaching.

The demon child covered her ears suddenly. Stop it she cried stop their voices.

Daniel knelt in front of her again. What are they saying.

Her voice broke. They say this world will end in silence. They say fear will drown reason. They say that humans and demons are easy to push. Easy to bend. Easy to break. They say they only need one more spark. And everything will fall apart.

Elara stiffened. That means they want war. Not by accident. By design.

Daniel felt his heartbeat slow even as the air grew colder. He understood now that something was shaping the fear that rotted through both worlds. And if fear was the weapon then understanding was the only defense.

The child whispered They know you are here. They know you listen. They do not want you to listen.

Daniel exhaled slowly. Then we will listen louder.

Suddenly the trees trembled. Not from wind. From something deeper. A ripple of energy passed through the grove and the ground pulsed like a heartbeat. Elara grabbed Daniel’s arm pulling him back.

A shadow rose from the forest floor shaped like smoke twisting into long thin limbs. No eyes. No face. Only a dark shimmer that vibrated with the sound of faint distant cries.

Elara’s blade flashed but Daniel lifted a hand stopping her. Wait.

The shadow did not attack. It drifted forward like a lost thought barely holding shape. The child whimpered and buried her face against Daniel’s coat. The shadow’s voice came as a feeling rather than a sound a wave of cold panic that washed through the grove. Daniel felt it hit him like icy water. Memories of doubt. Memories of failure. Fleeting images of every student he had not been able to help. Every fear he had never voiced.

He clenched his jaw and grounded himself. He whispered to no one in particular This fear is not mine. It does not belong to me.

The shadow reacted violently twisting upward. The hum in the air cracked like breaking glass. Daniel stepped forward planting his feet. He spoke softly yet firmly You cannot break me with borrowed fear.

The shadow flickered curling inward before collapsing like smoke pulled by a sudden wind. The cold faded. The air warmed. The forest grew still.

Elara stared at Daniel with wide eyes. What did you do.

Daniel breathed out slowly. I told the fear that it did not belong to me. Sometimes that is all a person can do.

The demon child looked up at him with stunned awe. You pushed it back. No one pushes them back.

Daniel stood and gently brushed her hair from her face. Then we will push back again. And again. Until this world remembers how to breathe without shaking.

Elara whispered You may not be a mage. But you might be exactly what this world needed without knowing it.

Daniel turned toward the city walls looming far beyond the trees. Dark clouds moved above like a restless sea. He felt the presence again not gone only retreating. Watching. Measuring him.

He knew this was only the beginning. And the world was waiting to see whether he would break or stand.
