Daniel sat on the edge of a stone bench in the guild courtyard later that afternoon feeling the exhaustion settle into his bones. The attack on the lower ward had drained him more than anything so far. Not because of the fear itself but because of the sheer number of people he needed to ground. Every mind the Echo touched added weight to his own heart.
Elara sat beside him quietly. She watched him with worried eyes. You keep doing this she whispered. Walking straight into fear like it cannot burn you.
He gave a tired smile. Fear burns worse when ignored.
The demon envoy stood nearby leaning against a pillar. He seemed troubled his eyes on the horizon where the sky had darkened again. The Echo grow stronger each time. This pace cannot continue. If the city faces another attack tonight it will collapse.
Daniel nodded. I know. We need a plan that goes beyond reacting.
Elara tilted her head. You mean going after them.
Daniel looked at the demon child who was curled against a wall half asleep but alert enough to watch every shadow. She has seen their nest he said. She knows where their presence is strongest.
The child whispered without opening her eyes Beneath the border forest. Deep underground. In a place where light does not reach. Where fear lives without names.
Daniel inhaled slowly. Then that is where we go.
Elara stiffened. Daniel no. That is a death trap. Even demons avoid those tunnels.
The demon envoy added My ancestors spoke of those caverns. They are filled with old memories. Old wounds. Old fears. The Echo do not just feed there. They grow there.
Daniel stood despite his exhaustion. The Echo are attacking stronger each time. They are testing how much fear the city can take before breaking. If we wait they will strike the palace next. Or the guild. Or the wards. They will choose the place where fear spreads fastest. We cannot defend everyone forever. We must go to the source.
Elara grabbed his wrist her voice shaking. Daniel if you go there they will tear your mind apart. They know your fears now. They know your past. They will show you everything you hide from yourself.
Daniel looked at her with steady eyes. Then I will face it. Fear grows stronger when avoided. I will not avoid what I came here to do.
The demon envoy stepped forward. If the human counselor goes I go. My people have lived with these shadows for generations. This ends now.
Elara clenched her jaw. Then I go too. I am not letting you face this alone.
The demon child sat up fully now her voice trembling but certain You will not find them by force. You must walk into the fear willingly. If you fight it blindly they win. But if you understand why fear exists they cannot twist it.
Daniel knelt beside her. Will you guide us.
She nodded slowly. I know the path. But Daniel you must promise something.
He met her eyes. Anything.
She whispered Do not try to save everyone. Save yourself too. That is the one thing they cannot twist.
Daniel froze. Those words cut deeper than any echo. He nodded slowly feeling her truth press gently against him like a warm hand.
Elara placed her hand on Daniel’s shoulder her voice soft. We walk together. No one breaks alone.
The demon envoy nodded gravely. The path will challenge us all. But unity gives us strength.
Daniel stood fully steady now despite the exhaustion. Then we leave at dusk. Before the Echo can gather more strength. Before they strike the city again.
He looked around the courtyard one last time taking in the fragile calm. People were tired but hopeful. The guild members moved with determination. The palace guards watched the skies with new understanding.
Daniel whispered to himself I did not come to this world to fight. But maybe I came to help it face what it always feared.
As dusk approached they prepared for the descent into the border caverns. Elara sharpened her blade though she knew steel would do little against fear. The envoy readied his armor though he knew strength would not be enough. The demon child held a small lantern though she knew light was only symbolic.
Daniel stood with empty hands and a steady breath. He carried nothing but clarity and the understanding he had spent his life building.
The Echo wanted him to break.
So he would walk straight into their nest.
Not as a warrior.
Not as a hero.
But as a counselor who refused to surrender a single truth inside himself.
The real confrontation had finally begun.
