The sun was setting and the warm summer breeze was starting to get cold. Sitting on the rocky fence by an empty road, staring out to the mountain views was a man in his 20s and a girl in her teens. The man in his 20s leaned back to grab something-a cherry soda-and gave it to the teenager.
“Here you go little sis!” said Amar. Maddie took the cherry soda, but stared at it in confusion. “What? You expected to receive alcohol.” Amar laughed.
“Nah, you're way too young. Maybe when you're older.” Amar tapped his chin. "Hmm, maybe I’ll let you drink…once you're 18!” Joked Amar.
Maddie shook her head. “No, I’m just confused about how you got these sodas. We didn’t stop at any gas stations along the way.” She said, checking the expiration date to see if it was safe to drink.
“Hey, this is one of the little pros of stealing a car, free stuff!”
“You really shouldn’t be saying that out loud. What happens if the cops catch us?"
Amar bumped into Maddie's shoulder. “Nah, we're all the way up in the mountains, and practically in the middle of nowhere.”
Maddie nodded and took a sip of the soda. Not fully believing her brother. They sat there basking in the sunlight or a little bit of it that was left; before the sun fully set.
“Hey Maddie, do you think we're always going to be lucky?”
Maddie pauses.
“No.”
For the first time in her life, Maddie was right. Her ears were filled with high pitched screeches before she realized it was sirens. The lights came next, blue and red overpowering the past yellow sunlight. Her head banged against an unknown object. Then everything went black. For a moment at least.
Maddie opened her eyes, confused, but immediately covered them due to the smoke that rose from the hood of the car. She pulled her hoodie over her nose to escape the burning.
This night is a strange one.
So why was she there? Back in the past?
