The atmosphere inside the Guild of Names shifted after the counterfeit incident. Craftsmen entered with urgency in their steps. Adventurers checked their gear carefully before approaching the consultation tables. Some merchants arrived just to listen to Evan’s explanations so they could educate their customers.
Evan recognized the need for structure. A defense system. A strategy that could withstand the Silver Ledger Guild and any copycats that followed.
He cleared the central table, spread out parchment sheets, and called Brannor and Varro to stand with him. The three of them formed a tight circle, their eyes focused with shared determination.
“This,” Evan said “is our resonance war room”
Varro blinked. “War room”
Brannor smirked. “We are preparing for a battle of identity. Makes sense”
Evan pointed to three areas of the parchment.
“First, authenticity defense. Our new heartbeat system works, but we need expansion. Every brand should have a distinct resonance signature that comes from their emotional intention. We can anchor these with perception nodes so customers can check authenticity at a glance”
Varro nodded. “Like a public verification station”
“Yes,” Evan said “We will build one outside the guild. Anyone can place their product under the verifier. If the resonance is stable, it’s real. If not, the mark warps”
Brannor grinned. “People will love that. They hate being tricked”
“Second,” Evan continued “education. We must teach merchants and adventurers what brand resonance means. How to recognize stability. How to feel intention. Lyrienne said identity is emotional mana. If we teach people to detect it, counterfeits won’t fool anyone”
Varro tapped his fingers. “We hold lessons. Open sessions. Craft demonstrations”
“Yes,” Evan said “Weekly seminars. Maybe daily for the first month. And we invite Lyrienne to teach perception basics”
Brannor’s eyes widened. “A mage teaching in the marketplace. That would shake the city”
Evan nodded. “Exactly. We need visibility. Authority. Legitimacy. If the public sees mages supporting us, the Silver Ledger will lose credibility”
Varro’s voice softened. “What about the third step”
Evan exhaled. “Expansion. We cannot stay in Dawnriver alone. If the Silver Ledger spreads counterfeit brands everywhere else, our influence here won’t be enough. We must expand the Guild of Names to other towns”
Brannor raised an eyebrow. “Franchising”
Evan blinked. “Yes. Exactly. Brand expansion. But not shops. Identity chapters. Small guild branches that teach craftsmen how to build authentic marks. We appoint trusted artisans as chapter heads. They uphold the philosophy of clarity”
Varro clapped excitedly. “A network. A living system”
Evan wrote:
Chapter Guilds
Regional Identity Centers
Perception Nodes Network
Brand Standards Guide
Brannor scratched his beard. “What about direct confrontation. Cassian will not sit quietly”
Evan set his pen down. “We need to understand him. Not just what he does. But why he does it”
Varro shivered. “To control markets. That is why”
“No,” Evan said “There’s more. His resonance felt too cold. Too precise. As if shaped by training. He sees identity not as meaning but as leverage”
Brannor frowned. “Like a blade”
“Exactly,” Evan said “He doesn’t think brand intention matters. Only public reaction. That makes him dangerous. Because he will do anything to shape reaction, even if the product is terrible”
Varro whispered. “He manufactures illusions”
The three stood silent for a moment.
“Then we do the opposite,” Evan said “We show the truth. And we anchor it so strongly that no illusion can override it”
The guild door opened suddenly.
A young courier rushed inside, flushed, carrying a sealed scroll. “Message for the identity maker!”
Evan opened the scroll. The handwriting was sharp and elegant.
To Evan Cole
Identity strategist
Founder of the Guild of Names
Your actions have shifted the emotional currents of Dawnriver. The council acknowledges your influence and requests a demonstration at the High Commerce Assembly in five days. Prepare your explanations. Prepare your intentions. The kingdom watches.
— Mage Observator Aldren, High Commerce Council
Varro’s jaw dropped. “The council… wants you to speak”
Brannor whistled. “This is huge. Rare. And probably dangerous”
Evan folded the message slowly. His hands shook—not with fear, but with a deep sense of responsibility.
“This is it,” he whispered “The chance to legitimize branding across the entire kingdom. If the council accepts the Guild of Names, the Silver Ledger cannot touch us without losing political ground”
Varro nodded quickly. “And if they reject you”
Brannor finished the sentence grimly. “They will shut us down”
Evan stared at his notes. Authenticity. Education. Expansion. Intention.
He took a deep breath. “Then we prepare the strongest demonstration of identity resonance the kingdom has ever seen”
Varro’s eyes sparkled. “Do you need support”
“Yes,” Evan said “Both of you. And Lyrienne. We need to show the council what brand magic truly is. Not manipulation. Not deception. Truth”
Brannor placed a heavy hand on his shoulder. “We are with you. Always”
Varro smiled nervously. “Even if the council chambers are terrifying”
Evan returned the scroll to the table.
“We have five days. Let’s build a presentation that will reshape the future of this world”
The resonance of the guild pulsed softly as if responding to the challenge.
And so the Guild of Names began preparing for its greatest test.
