Even If It Rains Forever

Chapter 3 -he Weight of Words

Chapter 3 -he Weight of Words

Nov 12, 2025

The rain hadn’t let up for days. It wasn’t just the kind of rain that soaked you through in minutes; this was the kind of rain that sat with you, uninvited, soaking into your bones. Sienna wasn’t sure if she hated it or loved it. She’d stopped trying to make up her mind a long time ago.

She sat by the window in her small apartment, the notebook still open in front of her, but the words had dried up for the moment. There was a dull ache behind her eyes, something between exhaustion and a longing she wasn’t sure how to name.

The quiet in the apartment had become almost oppressive in its stillness. She’d grown accustomed to the soft sounds of Liam’s presence—the way he said good morning without saying anything at all, the way he handed her coffee without expecting anything in return. It had become part of her morning ritual, just as much as the rain that washed over the town.

But today, something felt different. There was a shift in the air, a subtle tension that she couldn’t explain. She could feel it in her chest, like something was hanging on the edge of her breath, waiting to be said but never spoken.

She glanced at the clock. It was nearly 10 AM—time for the library to open. But for the first time in a while, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go.

The sound of footsteps approaching broke her reverie, and she turned her head, half-expecting to see Liam standing at her door. But it wasn’t him. It was Nora, her face flushed from the cold, a cup of coffee in her hand.

“Late start today?” Nora asked, raising an eyebrow as she stepped inside, pushing her wet hair out of her face.

Sienna sighed and stood up. “Just needed a moment.”

Nora looked at her knowingly. “You’ve been needing a lot of those lately. You okay?”

“I’m fine,” Sienna said quickly, but the lie felt like a weight in her mouth.

Nora didn’t press, but she didn’t leave either. She just stood there, waiting, her presence filling the room in a way Sienna hadn’t realized it could.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” Sienna admitted after a moment. “I feel like something’s about to change, but I’m not sure I’m ready for it.”

“You don’t have to be,” Nora said softly, walking toward the counter and setting her coffee down. “Sometimes change just happens, whether we’re ready or not.”

Sienna didn’t answer. She couldn’t. The truth was, she didn’t know what to expect anymore. She only knew that everything felt fragile, like the slightest shift in the wind could knock everything she’d built so far down.

After a long pause, Nora said, “You know, you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.”

Sienna looked at her, surprised by the words. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“I mean, whatever this is—whatever’s been happening with you and Liam—it’s not something you have to navigate alone. You’re allowed to ask for help. You’re allowed to want something more than just... this.”

Sienna’s throat tightened. She didn’t want to hear this. Not now, not when she was still trying to understand everything herself.

“I’m fine,” she repeated, but this time it didn’t sound convincing, even to her own ears.

Nora gave her a look, one that spoke more than words could. “Don’t close yourself off. Not yet.”

Sienna didn’t answer, but in that moment, she realized that something had already changed. She didn’t know what it was yet, but she could feel it.

And for the first time in a long while, she wasn’t sure she was ready to face it.

Sienna stood there for a moment, the silence thick between them. Nora’s words hung in the air, almost tangible, like something that had been left unsaid for too long. She could feel the weight of them pressing down on her chest, threatening to spill out.

But she didn’t say anything.

Nora didn’t push. She just took a slow sip of her coffee, watching Sienna, waiting for her to find her way to the words she wasn’t yet ready to speak.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Sienna sighed and sat down at the small table by the window. “I don’t know what to do,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Do about what?” Nora asked, setting her coffee down and sitting across from her.

“About Liam,” Sienna admitted, her hands restless as she traced the edge of her mug. “I don’t know what he wants from me, or what I want from him. Every time I think I’m starting to understand, something shifts.”

Nora’s expression softened. “Relationships are never easy, Sienna. Especially the ones where people are afraid of what they feel.”

“I’m not afraid,” Sienna said quickly, but even to her own ears, the words didn’t sound entirely convincing.

“You are,” Nora said gently. “Maybe not of him, but of what it means. Of the possibility that it could be real.”

Sienna didn’t answer. She didn’t know how to.

“Have you talked to him about it?” Nora asked.

Sienna shook her head. “I don’t know how.”

“You start with the truth,” Nora said. “You tell him what’s going on in your head. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it has to be real.”

Sienna met her eyes then, something stirring inside her, something like hope or fear or both. She didn’t know if she was ready for that kind of honesty. She wasn’t sure she’d ever been ready for it.

“I don’t know if I can do that,” Sienna said quietly. “What if I say the wrong thing?”

Nora shrugged. “Then you say it again. People aren’t perfect, Sienna. But they deserve to know the truth. All of it. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

Sienna was silent for a long moment, her mind racing with everything she hadn’t said, everything she hadn’t been able to admit. There was a part of her that wanted to run, to hide from the emotions swirling inside her. But there was another part, a quieter part, that knew Nora was right.

“You’re right,” Sienna said softly, though the words felt like a quiet surrender.

“Of course I am,” Nora said with a small smile, but there was no judgment in her tone, only understanding.

Sienna stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the rain. The world outside was blurry, just like the confusion inside her head. She didn’t know what would happen next, but for the first time, she realized she couldn’t keep waiting for things to fall into place on their own.

She had to choose.

And for the first time, that choice didn’t feel so terrifying.

The next morning, when Liam walked into the library with his usual coffee in hand, Sienna was ready.

She didn’t know exactly what she was going to say, but she knew it had to be said. No more pretending. No more hiding behind silence. It was time to speak the truth.

She met his gaze as he approached, and for a moment, they just stood there, the quiet between them as familiar as it had ever been.

But this time, the silence didn’t feel like something to fear. It felt like the space where honesty could finally take root.

“Liam,” Sienna said, her voice steady despite the nervous flutter in her chest.

He stopped, the cup in his hand hovering as if he wasn’t sure whether to set it down or keep it with him. “Yeah?”

“I need to talk to you,” she said, her heart pounding in her chest.

He looked at her for a long moment, then nodded. “Okay.”

And just like that, they were no longer standing in the same quiet, untouched space. Something had shifted. They were finally, for the first time, about to speak the things that had been left unsaid for too long.

Sienna took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly as she steadied herself against the counter. This was it—the moment when everything could change, or nothing at all.

Liam watched her, his usual calm replaced by something unreadable in his expression. He seemed to be waiting for her to say something, anything, but she could tell he wasn’t sure whether to push or to wait.

She swallowed hard, gathering her thoughts. “I don’t really know how to start this,” she admitted, her voice quieter than usual.

“It’s okay,” he said, his tone gentle. “I’m listening.”

She nodded, trying to find the words that had eluded her for so long. The truth felt so simple and yet so complicated all at once. It was hard to speak it aloud, even though she knew it had to be said.

“I think... I think I’ve been hiding,” she began, her voice a little shaky. “Not just from you, but from everything. From... feeling anything at all.”

Liam didn’t speak, but his gaze softened, as if he was letting her find her way through the silence.

“I’m scared,” she continued, “Scared of what happens if I let myself care, if I let myself get too close. It’s easier to stay here, in the quiet, pretending nothing matters.”

He stepped closer, his presence a comfort despite the uncertainty that lingered between them. “You don’t have to be scared, Sienna. I’m not going anywhere.”

She shook her head, the weight of her own words pressing down on her. “I don’t know if I can let anyone in, Liam. I don’t know if I can trust that someone will stay.”

The vulnerability in her voice surprised even her. She had kept so much of herself locked away for so long, afraid that if she let anyone close, they would leave. But now, with Liam standing there, the truth seemed to come pouring out of her whether she was ready for it or not.

“I’m not asking for promises,” he said softly. “I just... I want to be here. With you. If you’ll let me.”

The words settled between them, a quiet kind of understanding that neither had expected but both had been searching for.

Sienna’s breath hitched in her throat, the weight of his words sinking in. She had been so focused on protecting herself that she hadn’t realized she’d been shutting him out too. All this time, he hadn’t been asking for perfection, only for her to let him be part of the quiet.

She nodded slowly, her heart beating faster now. “I... I don’t know if I’m ready for everything yet. But I want to try. With you.”

Liam’s smile was small, but it reached his eyes. “That’s all I’m asking for. We can take it slow, Sienna. One step at a time.”

Sienna let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding. There was still so much to figure out, so many things left unsaid between them. But for the first time in a long while, she didn’t feel like she was standing on the edge of something that might break.

For the first time, it felt like the weight of her fears had shifted, just enough to allow something new to take root.

They stood there for a long moment, the library quiet around them, the rain still tapping against the windows, but the silence between them no longer felt empty. It felt full of possibility.

Finally, Sienna spoke, her voice soft but steady. “Thank you.”

Liam nodded, stepping back to give her space. “Anytime.”

And for the first time, neither of them had to say anything more. The truth had already been spoken, and the world outside, with all its noise and rain, seemed a little less heavy than before.

As the door to the library clicked shut behind him, Sienna felt a lightness in her chest she hadn’t realized she was missing. The weight of words, once so heavy, now felt like the beginning of something new.
