Chapter 3
After a much needed rest and a bit of free breakfast, Ellie and Carter headed out. Carter immediately calmed down once they were out of the village, then expressed his urgency to get to the legendary power source and get out of that dimension.
“Maybe the power source will be some kind of secret MDSC base, or a Demon secret.” Carter said out loud.
Ellie shook her head, “This magic is different, old. Really old. If it is MDSC it’s been there a while, and it’s just something the MDSC has been hiding. Or it’s some kind of, um…” Ellie didn’t have any other ideas.
“Controllers? Important’s?” Carter said, “Because that’s some people we’re going to have to worry about.”
Ellie shrugged, “It’s not like I can sense the type of people and their thoughts, I just know where they are and what kind of magic they can do.”
Carter looked weirdly at Ellie, “So the different magical energies that run through people?”
Ellie nodded, “It’s quite strange, it’s like I’m seeing a whole different world.”
Carter nodded, “But you still see this world right?”
“Of course, it would be bad if I didn’t.” Ellie said.
Carter nodded, “Alright, that’s cool. Gives you a make out of the battle.”
Ellie nodded, but before she could say anything a giant thumping came from under the sand. Carter knelt down, and Ellie followed. “What is that?”
Carter made a shushing motion, and waited for the thumping to stop. Once it did he kept still. “Stay completely still, we’re being stalked.”
Ellie nodded, “By what?”
A giant centipede-like creature erupted from the ground, Carter rolled back and caught himself easily. Ellie tried to do the same, but landed on her shoulder. When she did she felt a clear snap, and her arm erupted in pain. She let out a scream and landed on a rock, making her back hurt and feel out of place. Ellie felt nothing except pain for the next few moments, but then felt a wave of energy pass through her as her healing abilities kicked in. She looked around, now fully healed from her abilities to see Carter running for his life from the huge monster. She immediately got up, acting on her instincts. A large amount of sharp plants erupted from the ground at the giant monster. Ellie didn’t have time to marvel in the abilities she had unlocked, but still felt quite fond of herself for doing so. The thorns, you could call them, shot directly into the flesh of the creature. It roared in agony, finally taking its attention off of Carter.
“Hey, you big ugly bug!” Ellie yelled to the centipede. It turned around, obviously annoyed by the comment.
Carter ran up to the back of the creature and stabbing the exact spots Ellie’s thorns had hit, the beast roared once more and flung Carter off its back. Ellie took the chance to cast another spell, she took hold of the soul of the creature and pulled it out. Making the creature stutter, and fall. Ellie could feel her pull on the soul loosening. She absorbed all its energy and sent it flying back to its body, where she believed it would have a hard time coming back. She ran to Carter, who started running with her.
“Did you kill it?” Carter yelled.
She shook her head, “No, I was only able to pull out its spirit for a second!” She saw Carter looking behind them, she looked back as well. The creature looked even more angry, which didn’t even seem possible, and was coming right at them. “So I might have to find a more permanent solution.” Ellie admitted.
Carter nodded, “Definitely. You get any new magic from its soul?”
Ellie nodded, “Ya, but I don’t think it will help with making it more… You know, dead.”
Carter shook his head, “First for a plan, we need time, and that’s what we need right now.”
Ellie nodded, and started creating a green orb in her hand. “Get ready to stop on my count.” Carter nodded, thought visibly afraid. Ellie waited till they were on flat ground, “Count!” Ellie ducked and cast her spell creating a dome over both her and Carter, and making a nice cracking sound once the monster hit it.
Carter nodded, “Alright, what’s our plan?”
Ellie sighed, “That’s what I was gonna ask you.” She thought for a second, “Maybe you can bait it while I release some kind of magic on it.”
Carter shook his head, “Nope, I’ve been bait one too many times. Also what spell are you planning on using?”
Ellie shrugged, “I was just gonna go with it, that’s how I did it last time.”
Carter made a shushing sound, and looked around them. “You hear that?”
“Hear what?” Ellie asked.
“Exactly, nothing.” Carter looked around the dome, “Pull it down.”
Ellie nodded and moved down her shield, seeing nothing around them. “Is it gone?”
“No.” Carter said, pointing into a distant rock. “It’s waiting. It’s playing with its food.”
Ellie nodded, “Then let’s give it a round two.”
