The Hidden Past

19: When Shadows Come Home

19: When Shadows Come Home

Nov 23, 2025

News spread fast, and Felix quickly learned about the student who had been shot dead right outside her home. The uncertainty around the case reignited public interest, stirring fear all over the city.

He sat at the dining table, a cup of coffee in hand, listening to the report.
He could only scratch his head in frustration.

What is happening to this city?

His thoughts spiraled back to his own parents’ deaths—mysterious, unresolved. Were they murdered? Or was it natural? He still didn’t know. They died when he was barely old enough to understand anything. The past felt tangled with the present, and nothing made sense.

A deep frown settled on his face.

Just then, he saw his sister pass by.

“Jen?” he called out.

No response.

He frowned again. Maybe she didn’t hear me?

“Jenny, come eat with me when you’re done getting dressed,” he called out louder.

Still no answer. Strange—Jenny always replied immediately.

“Jenny!” he called firmly.

“Brother? Why?” Jenny appeared, not even dressed yet.

Felix blinked. Hard.

“You just went inside the room earlier… and you were wearing your uniform—” He stopped. “Maybe I’m just tired.”

Jenny stared at him, concerned.

“I didn’t go anywhere, brother. And I don’t have class this morning.”

Here we go again, Felix thought.
Another unexplained vision.

“Are you okay?” Jenny asked softly.

He nodded. No need to burden her with the strange things he’d been seeing lately. His ability came and went—only showing him things that mattered.

Jenny sat beside him.

“Has Thalia returned yet?” Felix asked, unable to hide the worry in his voice.

Jenny nodded slightly. He noticed the sadness in her eyes.

“I heard the student shot last night was your schoolmate,” he said, sipping his coffee.

“Yes, brother. It was Jasmin.”

Felix sighed heavily. He didn’t even know the girl, but the death of someone so young, so close to home, weighed on him.

“I hope justice is served quickly… for all of them.”

A voice spoke suddenly—

“Justice? Justice doesn’t come easily in a world where no one plays the game right.”

Felix froze. The cup nearly slipped from his hand.

A bloodied woman stood right in front of him.

He immediately looked away, forcing himself not to acknowledge her.

“How will justice be served,” the spirit continued, “if the people who know the truth remain silent?”

He recognized her. One of the missing women found mutilated… one of the victims he had tried to help too late. Her torn flesh, her broken form—it hurt to see her like this.

“Hey, brother! Hey!” Jenny’s voice snapped him back.

He pressed his fingers to his temples, breathing heavily.

“If you had helped us sooner, you wouldn’t be feeling this guilt.”
The ghost’s voice softened, but it still cut deep.

He knew that voice.
He had helped her before—helped her twin and another sibling.

“Jenny, I’ll rest for a bit,” he muttered, yawning. He stood and walked toward his room.

As he stepped inside, he saw Ellese.

Just… staring at him.

He clenched his jaw. He didn’t want his siblings involved in any of this. That was why he never told them about his ability.

Since the death of his cousin—the one who had been tied to the organization—Felix’s mind had never found rest. He hadn’t seen her soul again, but he was certain it was still inside the abandoned house across the street.

He sat on his bed, memories flashing sharply—

His cousin getting shot.
The blood-stained floor.
The siblings lying lifeless.
Even the youngest, his small body limp and cold.

He had followed the souls unknowingly and found himself witnessing the truth. The police still had no lead—not then, not now. The media assumed it was a robbery, a family fight gone wrong.

But Felix knew better.

After the crime scene was cleared, he had returned.
That was when the truth revealed itself—
a replay of what truly happened, shown only to him.

Everything was orchestrated.

What can we do against people who hold power over everything?
Who would even believe I can see spirits? They’d call me crazy.

“Ellese, I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I can’t risk my siblings’ lives.”

Her voice echoed softly—

“Have mercy on your siblings. They will be involved whether you want it or not… and more people will suffer.”

“Ellese, there’s no evidence to put your father and brother in jail. You know what will happen if we try to overturn everything.”

“That’s why… help my twin, Mikaela, and my brother, Jake.”

“It’s enough that I helped them escape.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“And Ruth… Chesca… please stop disturbing Mikaela.”

“They are our only hope,” Ellese said. “The only ones who can expose everything our father has done.”

Her form flickered—
and vanished.

Felix exhaled, a long, exhausted breath.

No matter how far you run from the dark,
no matter how long you try to forget—

The shadows always find their way back.

He lay down slowly, letting his thoughts pull him into the weight of everything.

The ghosts.
The past.
The truth.

And the danger growing closer every day.
