Evan woke before sunrise because today he needed more than a clean workshop and a clever system. He needed ingredients. A franchise built on alchemy required a steady stream of materials and that meant creating something this world had never seen. A supply chain.
Loras handed him a simple cloth bag. “This is the last of our crystal root. Without it we cannot brew healing extract again. If you want more you must gather it or buy it from the cartels. And the cartels never deal with small workshops unless we pay unfair prices”
Evan tied the bag and took a deep breath. He had built procurement systems before but never in a world where gathering raw materials meant fighting monsters. He walked through town and listened to the conversations of early morning merchants. Most stalls were half empty. Prices had risen because the forest routes were unsafe. Adventurers asked for hazard fees. Black market dealers whispered in corners with smug smiles.
Evan found a small booth selling dried herbs. The merchant was a woman with sharp eyes and quick hands. She watched him study the leaves like an inspector instead of a customer.
“You look at these as if you know what you are doing” she said.
“I know enough to see that this batch is older than the label says” Evan replied. The leaves had lost color and smelled faintly sour meaning they had been stored too long.
The merchant laughed without offense. “Honest and sharp. You are new in town”
“Evan Hale. I am rebuilding the workshop near the river”
Her expression changed. Not friendly not hostile but calculating. “The one making those clean glowing potions. Black market alchemists are already upset. That means you are doing well”
Evan nodded. “Do you know where I can get fresh crystal root without paying cartel prices”
The merchant leaned closer. “There is a place north of the river where the roots grow near old stones. But the forest is not safe. Monsters nest there. If you want materials you need someone who can survive the trip”
Evan thanked her and bought a small map she drew. As he walked away she muttered so he could hear “This world needs change. Be careful how quickly you bring it. People who profit from chaos do not enjoy order”
He returned to the workshop where Loras waited with two adventurers who had tested their new potions the day before. The pair introduced themselves as Rynn and Garron. Rynn carried two daggers and walked with a swift confident pace. Garron had broad shoulders and a calm face that could probably frighten monsters by itself.
“We heard you need crystal root” Rynn said. “And we want more of those potions. So we can guide you if you help supply us later”
Evan agreed. A supply chain needed partnerships and adventurers were the lifeline of raw materials.
The forest began gentle with tall trees and filtered sunlight. Birds chirped overhead. But the deeper they walked the more the air grew heavy. Roots twisted unnaturally. The ground had faint scorch marks. Something had passed through here recently something large. Garron examined claw marks on a trunk. “A riverback beast. Strong hide. Slow but loud. Not a problem unless it charges”
Evan stepped carefully. His world had creatures but none like this. Monsters changed the entire economics of materials. Danger was a cost. Risk shaped price. Suddenly he understood why raw ingredients were scarce and expensive.
They reached the old stone site. Crystal root glowed faintly under moss. Evan knelt and noted how consistent the plants were in size and shape. Perfect for standardized extraction. He wanted to cheer. This was the first real step to a controlled supply.
Then branches snapped. A heavy thud shook the soil. The riverback beast emerged from behind broken trees. Its body was wide and plated with dark stone like armor. Its eyes glowed deep orange.
Rynn cursed softly. “It was hunting”
Garron pulled his shield. “Stay behind us Evan”
Evan obeyed but watched carefully. Every field he worked in had a flow. Even danger had patterns. The beast lowered its head before charging. Rynn dodged right. Garron blocked with enough force that his boots dug into the ground. The impact sent dust flying.
Evan saw something important. When the beast hit Garron the armor plates momentarily shifted. Just enough for a small gap to appear near the shoulder. Not many would notice but Evan had trained his eyes on assembly lines where microgaps meant failure.
He shouted “The joint under the shoulder plate it opens when it charges. Aim there”
Rynn looked at him like he had surprised her but she nodded. When the beast charged again Garron braced and Rynn moved like wind. As the gap opened she drove her dagger into it. The beast roared and collapsed.
Garron wiped sweat. “Good eye outsider”
Rynn nodded. “Not everyone sees weak points. That saved us”
Evan smiled weakly. “In my world I studied the movement of machines and products. Monsters move too. Just in a different way”
They gathered enough crystal root to fill two bags. Rynn picked one up and whistled. “This is more than most small shops gather in a month”
Evan answered with excitement. “If we do this regularly we can build a predictable supply. That means stable prices and reliable potions”
Garron chuckled. “You speak like a merchant and a scholar”
Evan shrugged. “I speak like someone who wants to build something that lasts”
They returned to town at dusk. The workshop looked the same from outside but inside it felt alive. Evan immediately organized the new roots by size weight and freshness. He logged every batch on the cards.
Loras watched him work. “You seem like a man who knows where he is going”
Evan looked at the glowing ingredients. “I want a map of this entire world’s materials. Every forest. Every cave. Every monster. If we know where raw resources come from and how often we can collect them we can build a chain that never breaks”
Loras stood silently for a long time. “This world has never had such order”
“Then maybe it is time” Evan replied.
But when he stepped outside to cool his head he saw a piece of parchment nailed to the workshop door. No signature only a symbol drawn in thick black ink.
A crossed set of claws.
Rynn gasped. “The Black Claw Alchemists. The biggest black market group”
Evan touched the mark. It was a warning not a greeting.
He whispered “Good. Let them come. That means we are doing something worth protecting”
Yet he felt cold inside.
The supply chain had begun
So had the war over it
