The Alchemy Startup Founder

Episode 4

Episode 4

Nov 16, 2025

The next morning half the town already whispered about the Black Claw symbol left on the workshop door. Some spoke with fear. Others with curiosity. A few with anger. But everyone knew one truth. Someone wanted the new workshop to stop growing.

Evan ignored the talk and focused on work. The fresh crystal root needed processing. He and Loras cleaned each piece and cut them into even sections. Evan weighed them and wrote numbers on the batch card. It felt like the start of a real production line.

Then he prepared a test batch using the newly gathered root. The furnace glowed at a measured heat. The metal rod shifted colors in predictable transitions. He stirred the extract with calm movements counting each turn. When the mixture finished it glowed brighter than any previous batch.

Loras sampled a drop. “This is stronger and more stable. The new supply is excellent”

Evan nodded. “Because we controlled the gathering environment. And soon we will control processing storage and distribution too. That is how you build a franchise”

Before they could bottle the mixture a loud knock shook the door. Rynn entered followed by Garron and a third person. The newcomer was tall wrapped in a heavy cloak and carried two storage crates on his back.

“This is Branik” Rynn said. “A mid range material broker. When he heard about your potions he wanted to see for himself”

Branik removed his hood. His expression was serious with the eyes of someone who had survived dangerous trade routes. He handed Evan a small wooden box. Inside were dried scale flakes pale blue with fine grain texture.

“Frost drake scale” Branik said. “Rare. Hard to handle. If your new method is real prove it. Extract the frost essence cleanly. If you can do that we work together”

Evan studied the scales. In every recipe manual he had found so far frost drake scales were listed as unstable. They required precise heating or they shattered. Most shops refused to work with them because the failure rate was too high.

Evan pulled out a new batch card and wrote Frost Essence Trial Version 1. He labeled each step with care. Loras watched nervously. Branik folded his arms. Rynn and Garron stood close but silent.

Evan placed the scales into a small pot and heated them slowly. He used the temperature rod to match the heat zone he had marked yesterday. He stirred in fixed intervals. When steam rose he reduced heat at the exact moment the rod indicated a shift in metal color.

Everyone held their breath. Frost drake scale extraction was known for sudden explosions when done wrong.

Evan lifted the pot and poured the mixture into a cooled glass vial. The liquid settled into a clear blue solution with faint swirling patterns. Not cloudy. Not unstable.

Loras gasped. “This is perfect. I have not seen frost essence this pure in twenty years”

Branik stepped forward and sniffed the mixture. His eyes widened. “You succeeded on your first attempt. I have seen master alchemists fail dozens of times. How did you do this”

Evan turned the batch card toward him. “We controlled every variable. And we wrote everything down so we can repeat it. Anyone can repeat it if trained well”

Branik stared at the card as if it were sorcery. “If you can standardize frost essence production the cartels will go mad. They regulate the supply almost completely. And the black market will not accept losing one of their high profit items”

Rynn crossed her arms. “Then they should adapt or get out of the way”

Branik nodded. “I want a long term contract with you. I can move materials safely. I can deliver crates of raw ingredients to your door. But if we work together you must prepare for attention from dangerous groups”

Evan shook Branik’s hand. “We accept the risk”

That afternoon they created their first mixed batch combining healing extract with a small amount of frost essence to produce a chilled recovery potion ideal for injuries caused by fire magic. It worked smoother than expected.

When Evan took a small sample to the adventurers guild the hall went silent. The guild master tasted it. His face brightened with real surprise. “This is cleaner and more effective than anything we have. We will place a standing order for ten units a week”

Evan bowed slightly. “We can supply that consistently”

The guild master frowned at the batch card Evan held. “What is that”

“A process” Evan answered. “A way to ensure every potion is the same strength every time”

The guild master stared as if he had just seen the future. “If this spreads it will change everything about adventurer safety. I hope you know what kind of enemies you will make”

Evan smiled with confidence he did not fully feel. “We will handle them”

But when they returned to the workshop at dusk they found the door slightly open. Nothing was stolen. Nothing was broken. But on the table lay another symbol written in red chalk.

A wide circle with spiked edges.

Loras shivered. “That is the mark of the Royal Alchemy Monopoly Bureau. They are watching us now”

Evan felt pressure tighten in his chest.
The market had reacted
The factions had taken notice
The real fight for the future of alchemy had begun
