The Alchemy Startup Founder

Episode 5

Episode 5

Nov 16, 2025

The workshop felt colder the next morning even before the furnace was lit. Evan stared at the red chalk symbol left by the Royal Alchemy Monopoly Bureau. It sat in the center of the table like a silent threat. Loras refused to erase it as if touching the mark would invite punishment.

Evan studied the symbol. A ring of spikes drawn in sharp lines. It reminded him of the kind of warning sent to factories back on Earth when they broke industry rules except this world was far less polite.
“What do they usually do when they mark a shop like this” Evan asked.

Loras swallowed hard. “It means they will come for an inspection. But they do not inspect to learn. They inspect to punish. If they find anything that threatens their control they shut the shop down. Sometimes they seize the inventory”

Rynn frowned. “You should not have to hide for doing good work. But the Bureau does not care about quality. They care about power”

Evan took a deep breath. “Then we need to prepare. If they want to inspect us we give them nothing they can twist against us. Everything must look professional. Organized. Safe”

He spent the morning reviewing every tool vial furnace and jar. He cleaned the floor and labeled each shelf. He created a new set of batch cards for all recent production with clear handwriting and step by step entries. If the Bureau wanted to accuse them of unsafe production they would find the opposite.

Still Loras kept pacing. “You do not understand. They do not like newcomers. They do not like change. Every year they shut down six or seven shops not because the shops did wrong but because they dared to grow too fast”

Evan placed a hand on the old man’s shoulder. “This is no different from monopolies in my world. They protect what they own. But they cannot stop every idea. We are not breaking rules. We are improving them”

Before Loras could reply a small crowd gathered outside. Evan stepped out and saw a group of villagers many of whom had never visited the workshop before. Their faces shifted between fear and hope. An older woman stepped forward holding a small wooden bottle that looked like it had been reused dozens of times.

“Master Loras your potions used to help my son after injuries from working in the lumber yard. But lately the potions from other shops failed. Someone said you made a stronger batch yesterday. Can we buy one”

Evan nodded to Rynn who helped Loras bring out the newest healing extract. When people saw the clean golden glow inside the bottles they spoke excitedly.
“Look how smooth it looks”
“This is not like the cloudy potions from the east market”
“Maybe the workshop is returning to its old glory”

Evan felt something shift. The people trusted what they could see with their own eyes. Rather than hiding the workshop he decided to show its strength. They sold every bottle within minutes. The coins filled a small chest but more importantly the workshop earned something far harder to obtain. Public trust.

Then a whisper spread from the back of the crowd. “The Bureau will not like this. They crush any shop that gains too much attention”

Evan stepped forward so everyone could hear. “If we do good work there is nothing to fear. We will not break laws. We will not sell unsafe products. We will not hide. If they want to inspect us we welcome them openly. Let them see that better alchemy does not harm the kingdom”

The villagers murmured among themselves. Some hopeful some doubtful. But many liked what they heard. A few even offered to spread the word about the workshop.

After the crowd dispersed Branik arrived carrying two crates of raw materials. He set them down with a heavy thud. “News travels fast. The Bureau heard about your frost essence test. Someone in the merchant lanes told me they are sending an inspector soon”

Evan sighed. “How soon”

“Could be tomorrow. Could be today” Branik said. “Their patrol group was spotted two towns away”

Rynn drew her daggers slightly visible beneath her cloak. “If they try anything strange we are not helpless”

Evan shook his head. “No fighting. If we fight they win. They will brand us criminals. But we can prepare”

He pulled out two blank sheets and created two new items.

Inspection Log
A record of every ingredient entering or leaving the workshop.

Safety Sheet
A clear set of rules for fire handling heating tools storage guidelines and cooling procedures.

Loras watched him write. “You are building something even the Bureau has never used”

Evan replied quietly. “If they want to play by rules let us show them rules better than theirs”

Hours passed with work and rehearsal. They practiced explaining the batch cards without sounding rebellious. They organized the ingredient shelves precisely. Evan made sure every container had a lid and every tool had a place.

Just as the sun set boots echoed outside. Hard steps in unified patterns. Government steps.
A deep voice called “Open for inspection. Royal Alchemy Monopoly Bureau”

Loras froze. Rynn gripped her blade. Garron stepped closer to the door. Branik quietly slipped behind a shelf.

Evan exhaled and opened the door himself. Three officials stood there wearing dark coats with silver crests. The lead inspector had narrow eyes and a cold expression. He stepped inside without waiting for permission.

“So this is the workshop causing noise across the region. Show me your production methods”

Evan guided them through the room with calm steady pacing. Inspectors checked tools shelves and furnace. They asked questions. Evan answered precisely and clearly.
Why label jars
Why track batches
Why allow adventurers near the workshop

Evan responded with logic that even a bureaucracy could appreciate.
“To reduce waste and improve stability”
“To prevent unsafe mixtures”
“To ensure feedback from actual users improves quality”

The inspectors wrote notes in stiff handwriting. They could not find anything dangerous or illegal. If anything the workshop was cleaner than most Bureau labs.

At the end the lead inspector paused over the batch cards. His expression tightened slightly but he said nothing. Finally he turned toward the door.
“Your methods are unusual. But not yet a violation. We will watch you. Any further disturbance and we return”

He left without another word.

When they were gone Loras collapsed into a chair. “I thought they would shut us down on sight”

Evan shook his head. “They cannot shut down what they cannot prove to be a threat. And we left no weakness to attack”

Rynn smiled. “For now you won”

Evan looked at the chalk symbol again. The Bureau’s shadow was gone but their attention remained.
The workshop survived the first strike
Now the real expansion could begin
