Evan barely slept that night. His mind kept replaying the shadowy meeting with the Black Claw and the glimpse of the Royal Bureau informant watching from the rooftops. Two forces that hated each other had shifted their attention toward one small workshop. And between them sat the fragile beginning of an alchemy revolution.
When dawn arrived he was already at the central table drawing new charts. The workers slowly emerged from their makeshift beds. Mira rubbed her eyes. Joss stretched with tired arms. Talen approached the table cautiously.
“You did not sleep” Mira said gently.
Evan shook his head. “There is no time to slow down. We move into phase two starting today. You three will form the first ever standardized alchemy team in this world”
The workers exchanged nervous glances but excitement shone beneath their fears.
Loras walked in with a cup of bitter herb tea. “Before rushing into expansion perhaps we should consider the danger. The Bureau’s eyes are everywhere. And the Black Claw waits for us to stumble”
Evan nodded. “I know. That is why we expand with precision not chaos”
He placed three pages on the table.
Page One: Training Module One
For any new worker to learn the basics within one week.
Page Two: Ingredient Flow Map
To show how raw materials moved from forests to tables. The first sketch of a supply chain.
Page Three: Workshop Blueprint Version 2
A layout that any new franchise could copy.
Joss leaned forward. “You want to build more workshops even though we have not finished stabilizing this one”
“Exactly” Evan said. “If we wait too long someone else will copy the idea with worse safety or worse intentions. Then the Bureau will blame us. We need to lead the market before anyone can twist it”
Talen pointed at the map. “What is this area marked with a circle”
“That is the Ember Basin” Evan said. “A volcanic zone north of Oakedge. Many rare ingredients grow near heat vents there. Fire bloom petals volcanic ash resin and ember fruit stones. All high grade materials almost never used because they are hard to gather. If we secure those materials we gain unique advantages”
Rynn walked in from outside. “Ember Basin is dangerous. Only a few hunters go there and even they avoid certain ridges”
Garron followed her. “But if we travel with care it is possible. And if we bring back ember fruit stones you can make powerful burn resistant potions. The guild would pay well for those”
Evan nodded. “Exactly. And if the guild trusts us they can shield us from the Bureau. The Bureau does not attack guild allies lightly”
Mira stepped closer. “We want to help too. Tell us what to prepare”
Evan smiled. “You three will hold the workshop while we go on the expedition. You will follow the training module exactly. You will track every batch. You will not improvise. You will not rush. This is your chance to prove that the system works without me in the room”
They looked both terrified and honored.
Before departing the group cleaned the entire workshop. Branik arrived with a map of Ember Basin. He pointed to red marked zones. “Avoid these cracks. Too unstable. But here and here you can find ember vines and molten bark”
Evan memorized every detail. “Good. When we return we start full expansion”
Rynn packed gear. Garron checked weapons. Loras handed Evan a small pendant. “This belonged to my late apprentice. It senses heat in magical zones. It may warn you before the ground erupts”
Evan accepted it with quiet respect.
When they left Oakedge the villagers watched with mixed emotions. Some cheered. Some prayed. Some feared the Bureau would punish them for helping the outsider. But all of them knew something had changed since Evan arrived. The workshop had become more than a business. It was becoming a symbol.
The path toward Ember Basin grew harsher with every mile. The air thickened with heat. Trees thinned until only charred stumps remained. Strange insects with glowing shells crawled across cracked soil. Distant roars echoed beneath the earth.
Rynn studied the ground. “The heat pulses mean something big lives under the rock. Be ready”
They reached the Basin by dusk. Rivers of cooled lava formed ridges and deep hollows. Red mist drifted around volcanic vents. Evan felt sweat forming instantly. Yet among the harsh terrain he saw beautiful glowing plants. Ember vines wrapped around rocks like soft fire. Ash resin dripped slowly from melted trunks.
“This place is perfect” Evan whispered. “Dangerous but filled with raw potential”
They collected ember vines carefully. Each time they cut a piece Garron shielded them in case creatures emerged. Then they found ember fruit stones glowing like tiny suns beneath cracked soil.
But as Evan reached for one of the brightest stones the ground shook violently.
A massive creature burst from the earth.
Its body looked like molten stone. Lava dripped from its plates. Its eyes burned like furnaces. Rynn inhaled sharply.
“An Ashborn Titan”
Garron planted his shield. “Run Evan”
Evan stepped back but he did not run. He studied the titan’s movement. The plates shifted slowly. The heat around its joints pulsed in waves. He saw patterns.
He shouted. “When the plates open the inner core is exposed. But only for a moment. Aim at the cracks near the shoulders not the chest”
Rynn nodded. Garron roared and blocked the titan’s first slam. The ground cracked from the impact. Lava splashed but Rynn dodged and struck. Her blade pierced the gap. The titan screamed and fell back.
Another strike. Another opening. Garron smashed its knee. Rynn slashed again. Evan shouted the timing. The titan collapsed in a burst of ember light.
They collected the remaining materials quickly and retreated from the Basin just as new tremors began. By the time they returned to Oakedge the night sky shimmered with cool air rather than burning heat.
Evan held the ember fruit stones with trembling hands. “These ingredients could change everything. And they belong to us now. Not the Bureau. Not the black market”
They approached the workshop with relief. But when they opened the door they saw Mira pacing. Joss clutching a batch card. Talen blocking the window with a wooden board.
“What happened” Evan asked.
Mira looked pale. “Two Bureau agents came while you were gone. They asked too many questions. They looked at our batch cards. They said they will return tomorrow with more men”
Evan exhaled slowly.
The war of expansion had begun
And he needed to be ready
