The Arcane City Architect

Episode 3

Episode 3

Nov 17, 2025

Evan Crest returned to the surface with the adventurer team behind him. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows against Eastwall’s broken battlement. Merchants walked through the streets while guards shouted orders at the gates. On the surface everything looked normal. But now Evan knew the truth.
The city was standing on a hollow foundation. Its heart was missing.

Lady Arwyn Crestfall waited at the entrance of the ruins with an expression caught between impatience and concern. “Well? What did you find?”

“More than expected,” Evan said. He brushed dust off his gloves. “The ruins under the district once controlled mana flow for the entire east side of the city. A core stabilizer was stored there. It was removed long ago. Without it the city will continue to drift and collapse.”

Her eyes widened. “Removed? By whom?”

“That is the problem,” Evan said. “Someone skilled. Someone who understood the system. A builder or architect. Not a common thief.”

Arwyn looked away in frustration. “This region has too many factions. If a noble house stole it they could weaken Eastwall at any time. Or strengthen only their own district.”

He nodded. “The core is valuable. But misuse would be dangerous. If the wrong person installs it elsewhere they could redirect mana across an entire region. They could drain Eastwall’s flows and bring it to ruin.”

She clenched her fists. “So the council caused years of budget cuts and political chaos while never realizing the true problem sat beneath their feet.”

“They never inspected deep enough,” Evan said. “Too focused on surface maintenance. Not the foundation.”

Arwyn sighed. “The council will not like this. They will ask questions. They will want to know who stole it. They will want to delay your work until they finish their debate. And rival houses will use this to argue that they deserve the development rights instead of me.”

Her words matched what Evan expected. Nobles cared more about influence and control than honest work. Whatever the core’s story was it would be tangled in political motives older than both of them.

Evan spoke calmly. “I need access to the city’s archive. Financial records from the last century. Construction records. Old architect guild logs. Anyone who worked in the east district during major renovations is a suspect.”

Arwyn nodded. “I can get access. But some documents are controlled by the Crestfall family council. They will ask why you want them.”

“Tell them the city is collapsing,” Evan said. “That usually accelerates cooperation.”

Her lips curved slightly. “You speak like someone who has dealt with nobles before.”

“I have,” Evan answered. “Most do not understand architecture. But they understand threat. Eastwall’s collapse would cost them tax revenue, territory control, and trade routes. They will listen.”

Arwyn motioned him to follow. “Come. The council chambers are this way. But be warned. Every noble house will be present. Many want this development project. They want it so badly they would buy your designs or sabotage them if they could.”

“I know,” Evan said. “I have competed in many city development bids. They all follow the same pattern. Someone tries to influence the architect. Someone tries to steal the blueprint. Someone tries to lower the budget halfway through.”

Arwyn looked at him with new respect. “And yet you keep taking projects like this?”

“Because cities deserve to be built correctly,” Evan said. “If I refuse then someone else accepts the job and cuts corners until a disaster happens. I would rather build a city that lasts a hundred years than watch one collapse because someone wanted to save a few coins.”

They walked into the heart of Eastwall where the Crestfall family manor stood. The path passed through merchant plazas lined with temporary stalls. Adventurers traded trophies from recent quests. Children ran between the stalls. No one realized the ground under their feet was weakening. Evan imagined what would happen if the mana drift worsened. Buildings might tilt. Markets might sink. A single quake could tear the main road apart.

They entered the council hall. Gold banners hung from tall columns. Dozens of nobles in fine clothing filled the circular room. As soon as Arwyn stepped in murmurs spread like wildfire.

“That is the architect she hired.”

“He looks young.”

“I heard he built a floating tower for Riverwatch City.”

“I heard he caused one to collapse.”

“That rumor is false,” Arwyn said under her breath. Evan pretended not to hear.

At the center of the hall sat the Crestfall council. Five elders with stern eyes and sharper tongues. The head of the council, Lord Varren Crestfall, raised a hand.

“Lady Arwyn. You disrupt our schedule with claims of structural danger. Explain yourself.”

Arwyn stepped forward. “The east district is unstable. The architect inspected the ruins under the wall and discovered a missing stabilizer core.”

The room fell silent. Faces turned to Evan. Lord Varren frowned deeply. “A missing core? Those ruins have been sealed for decades.”

“Which means the theft happened long before your previous inspections,” Arwyn said.

Another noble scoffed. “Impossible. No thief could access those ruins. They were protected by ancient seals.”

Evan spoke with calm authority. “The seals were broken from the inside. Someone who understood the system forced their way out. The stabilizer was removed cleanly. This was no monster attack. It was done by a trained architect.”

More murmurs. Someone whispered, “A traitor in the guild?” Another said, “This is political sabotage.”

Lord Varren tapped his cane. “Architect Crest. You are certain?”

“Yes,” Evan said. “The entire eastern mana flow depends on that core. Without it the wall will collapse within months.”

Chaos erupted. Nobles argued in sharp voices. Some demanded immediate funding. Others accused rival houses. Some suggested removing Arwyn from the project. The hall echoed with anger and suspicion.

Arwyn looked overwhelmed but tried to speak. Evan raised one finger toward her. A silent gesture that said let me handle this. Then he stepped forward to the center of the hall.

When he spoke the room quieted.

“Eastwall stands on a fragile foundation. Blame can come later. But if you want the city to survive we must act now. Rebuild the flow lock. Search for the missing core. And coordinate all designs through one central planner.”

A noble sneered. “And who would that planner be? You?”

“Yes,” Evan said. “Because I am the only architect here who has seen the full structure. If you place this project in the hands of anyone else the east district will fall.”

Silence followed. No arrogance. No shouting. Just the realization that Evan was telling the truth.

Lord Varren finally spoke. “Then the council temporarily grants you full authority over the east district reconstruction. You will receive access to our archives. And you will report progress daily.”

Arwyn let out a breath she had held for minutes.

Evan bowed respectfully. “I will begin immediately.”

The meeting ended with tension still heavy in the air. But the decision had been made. Evan was officially the architect of Eastwall’s future.

Yet as he left the hall he noticed one noble still watching him. A tall man with silver hair and calm eyes. He offered no words. Only a slight smile. The kind that hid dangerous intentions.

Evan recognized that expression.
He had seen it before in other cities.
It belonged to someone who knew more than he admitted.

Someone who might know where the missing core had gone.

And someone who might not want it found.
