Evan felt himself falling through dust and light. The stabilizer core pulsed in his hands like a living heart. His head spun. His vision blurred. But he knew one thing. If he dropped the Heart it would detonate. And if it detonated the valley would collapse completely.
A strong hand grabbed his arm. Kira. She pulled him upward and shouted something he could barely hear. Brunn grabbed Evan’s other arm. Arwyn ordered the guards to clear a path through the falling stone.
The chamber ceiling caved in. A slab of stone the size of a wagon smashed into the pedestal where the Heart once rested. Mana sparks exploded. The floor tilted. Cracks spread across the entire chamber like lightning.
Kira shouted, “We need to go. The whole place is falling.”
Evan gripped the Heart tightly and nodded. They sprinted into the main tunnel while the chamber collapsed behind them. Dust choked the air. The ground quaked with each falling stone. The narrow tunnel shook violently.
Arwyn guided the team. “Stay low. Shields up. Move.”
They reached the junction where the tunnels split. The left path was already blocked by rubble. The right path began to crack. Evan looked at the patterns etched into the rock.
The collapse was not random. It followed mana channels. Silas had triggered a chain reaction.
The collapse spread toward Eastwall.
Evan shouted, “We need to move faster.”
They ran down the old tunnel. The ground opened in places, revealing dark pits that dropped into unknown depths. Brunn used his hammer to break loose rocks blocking the path. Kira supported a guard who twisted his leg during the fall.
Evan moved at the front with Arwyn. The Heart in his hands glowed like a lantern guiding their path. But the glow was unstable. Too bright. Too strong. Arwyn noticed.
“Evan, is that dangerous?”
“Yes,” he said. “If it overloads we die.”
“Wonderful timing,” Arwyn muttered.
They reached a shaft where a wooden lift once stood. The lift was long gone. Only chains remained, rusted and dangling over a narrow drop.
Kira looked over the edge. “We cannot climb this.”
Evan assessed the shaft. “No. But the walls are stable. Someone carved footholds long ago.”
Brunn spat dust. “You want us to climb a wall while the mine collapses.”
“Yes. Fast,” Evan said.
Arwyn did not question him. “Guards first. Then Kira. Then Evan. Brunn stays at the bottom to boost people up.”
They moved. One by one they climbed the carved footholds. The shaft trembled. Dust rained down. Rocks fell from above. Kira reached the top and helped the guards climb out. Arwyn followed. Evan climbed last with the Heart pressed against his chest. Brunn climbed behind him using pure strength.
Halfway up the shaft a violent tremor shook the tunnel. The wall cracked. A ledge broke. Evan lost his grip and slipped.
Kira reached down immediately. “Grab my hand.”
Evan tried but the Heart glowed brighter. The pulse threw off his balance again. Brunn braced himself and lifted Evan upward with both hands.
“Move lad,” Brunn grunted. “Or we both go down.”
Evan forced himself up one foothold at a time. Kira grabbed his wrist and pulled him onto the ledge at the top. Brunn climbed after and collapsed onto the stone floor breathing heavily.
Arwyn stepped forward. “Everyone still alive?”
“Mostly,” Kira said.
“Enough,” Brunn said.
Evan stood and looked ahead. The tunnel ahead had collapsed partially, leaving only a narrow gap. They squeezed through one by one, scraping their armor against sharp stone. When they emerged the air became fresher. A faint stream of light filtered from above.
Kira shouted, “Exit ahead.”
They ran. The ground shook again. A massive stone pillar collapsed behind them. Dust blasted forward like a sandstorm. Evan shielded the Heart. Brunn shielded Evan. Arwyn and the guards pushed forward.
They burst out of the mine entrance just as the entire tunnel behind them caved inward. A thunderous crash echoed across the valley. Birds scattered from the cliffs. The dust cloud rose high into the air.
Evan collapsed onto the ground, holding the Heart tightly.
Kira dropped beside him. “You are insane. You know that?”
Evan breathed slowly. “I know.”
Arwyn kneeled next to him. “Are you hurt?”
“No. But the Heart is unstable. Silas forced it to awaken too early.”
Brunn spat dust from his beard. “Let us smash the thing.”
“No,” Evan said sharply. “If it breaks it releases all stored mana at once. It would destroy the valley and half of Eastwall.”
Arwyn stood. “Then we keep moving. We need to take it somewhere safe.”
Evan nodded. “To Eastwall. To the guardian chamber. The structure there was designed to house it.”
Kira frowned. “But Silas escaped. He may be heading back to the city.”
Evan stood slowly. “He will. He said collapse must begin with Eastwall. He will try to reach the city before we do.”
Brunn cracked his knuckles. “Then we stop him.”
Evan stared north. Dust still fell from the collapsing mine. The valley trembled with aftershocks.
They had recovered the Heart.
But they had awakened something worse.
And Silas, the architect with no shadow, was already moving toward Eastwall.
The race had begun.
