The Arcane Power Company

Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Nov 17, 2025

Ethan spent the next several days upgrading Varnel’s ironworks. The conversion unit became a central heartbeat in the workshop. Workers who once ended their days at sunset now forged well into the night. Lamps cast soft blue light across every wall and tool. The furnace radiated steady heat that never dipped or surged. The workshop grew louder brighter and more productive than it had ever been.

But the changes did not stop at Varnel’s building. Once people saw that the ironworks no longer relied on exhausted mages the news spread like wildfire. Neighbors watched with disbelief as the workshop lights stayed on past midnight. Merchants whispered about opportunity. Artisans wondered whether their own shops could run without the constant cost of magic.

And soon the streets near the ironworks filled with visitors. Some came to witness the glowing lamps. Others came out of hope. Others came out of fear or suspicion. But everyone came.

Ethan stood outside the workshop one evening watching families gather around the bright windows. Children laughed and pointed. Adults stood in silent amazement. A few mages glared with obvious resentment. But they did not approach.

Varnel walked up beside him. You see that Roadside vendors selling at night. I have lived here fifty years and never seen this.

Ethan nodded. Energy changes behavior. When people have light they stay awake longer. They work longer. They buy more. Cities grow from the inside out.

Varnel crossed his arms proudly. We are becoming the first workshop that never sleeps.

Ethan hesitated. That might not be good for your workers.

Varnel laughed. We are not forcing them. But they want the extra hours. They earn more coin. For the first time they have choice.

The word choice hung in the air. Ethan knew the guild feared exactly that.

Lira stepped out of the workshop carrying a notebook filled with diagrams she had drawn. She had spent hours observing the conversion unit taking notes on how smooth the mana flow was and how little it burdened the environment. She stood beside Ethan and watched the crowd.

Your invention has become a spectacle she said quietly

It is not a spectacle Ethan replied. It is progress.

Lira sighed. You and Avelen see the world from opposite ends. You seek growth. He seeks control. The guild council is meeting tomorrow. They will discuss your device and decide whether it is legal.

Ethan breathed slowly. And if they decide it is not

Lira lowered her voice. Then the guild will order all units dismantled. If you refuse they have the authority to imprison you.

Varnel growled. Let them try. They cannot arrest half the district.

Lira shook her head. They do not need to. They only need to make an example of one man.

Ethan looked at the glowing lamps. The crowd. The smiles. The tired mage who finally had rest. The apprentices who now had more work and more learning. He saw the beginning of something that felt much larger than himself.

He whispered I am not dismantling anything.

Lira closed her eyes. Then the guild will escalate.

Ethan turned to her. What about you What will you do

She hesitated. I believe in magic. I believe in discipline. But I also believe in fairness. And what you have built is fair. So I will stand with you. But know that it will cost me everything in the guild.

Ethan felt a weight settle in his chest. Thank you Lira

The night grew deeper. The lamps glowed brighter. The city district seemed alive in a way it had never been before. People laughed. Shops stayed open. Workers walked without stumbling into darkness.

A child approached Ethan shyly. Mister Are you the one who made the lights

Ethan knelt. Yes I made the device that powers them.

The child held up a small cracked lantern. Can you make this one glow too So my mom can read at night

Ethan took the lantern gently. I can fix this. Come back tomorrow.

The child smiled and ran back to his family.

Ethan stood and exhaled slowly. Every innovation he had made on Earth felt buried under paperwork meetings or investors. But here he saw results immediately. Real people. Real change.

He whispered to himself I cannot stop now

The next morning Ethan walked toward the guild hall with Lira by his side. The building stood at the center of the city tall and imposing with carved stone towers and banners displaying the symbol of mana mastery. The entrance doors were guarded by armored sentinels who eyed Ethan with open hostility.

Lira took a deep breath. Whatever happens inside remember the council cares more about their influence than any research.

Ethan nodded. That is why I need to face them.

The guards pushed open the heavy doors. The council chamber was grand and cold. Twelve mages in ornate robes sat in a semicircle around a raised platform. Master Halwen stood near the center his eyes burning with smug anticipation. Lord Avelen sat beside the council with a confident smirk.

The High Councilor spoke Ethan Rowe. You stand accused of reckless manipulation of mana construction of unauthorized devices and endangering the mana ecosystem of this kingdom. What do you say in your defense

Ethan stepped onto the platform. The room felt heavy with tension.

He raised his voice. I say that everything I built brings stability not danger. My conversion unit stabilizes mana flow. It does not drain it. It does not disrupt it. It only regulates what is already present in the air.

Halwen scoffed. Mana has been controlled by trained mages for centuries. It is not a resource to be bent by machines.

Ethan answered It is a resource to be understood. Energy is not meant to belong to a single group. It belongs to everyone.

Avelen slammed his fist on the table. You speak of fairness but your device threatens our society. Mages will lose their jobs. Noble houses will lose their influence. Cities will lose their traditions. You are trying to reshape our world in your image.

Ethan met his gaze. I am trying to give people light. Heat. Opportunity. Safety at night. A chance to grow. If that threatens you then perhaps it is not me who needs to change.

A ripple of murmurs crossed the council chamber. Lira stepped forward and bowed respectfully.

Honored councilors she said. I am a trained mage. I have observed the device myself. It does not disrupt the environment. It does not harm mana flow. It is safe.

Halwen shouted Lira You betray your guild

She raised her head. I follow truth not fear.

The High Councilor hammered his staff on the floor. Enough We will deliberate.

Ethan and Lira stepped back as the council discussed behind a barrier spell that muted their voices. Ethan clenched his fists. Lira looked tense but hopeful.

After several minutes the barrier faded.

The High Councilor spoke The Mage Guild declares the following ruling. The construction of mana stabilizers is forbidden. The distribution of conversion units is banned. The device in Varnel’s ironworks must be dismantled within three days. Ethan Rowe is prohibited from further research. Failure to comply will result in arrest.

Lira gasped. Ethan stood frozen.

Avelen smiled with victory.

Halwen turned to Ethan. Your little spark ends here outsider.

But Ethan only said one sentence.

No. It begins here.
