The street outside Varnel’s ironworks glowed faintly with the steady blue light of mana lamps. Dozens of townsfolk gathered behind Ethan forming a wall of quiet resolve. People clutched tools lanterns baskets anything they had on hand. No one looked like a soldier yet every face carried the same expression of stubborn hope. A hope they had not possessed only days before.
Across from them marched the guild’s forces. Blue robed mages stood in perfect formation each carrying a staff engraved with mana runes. Behind them noble guards wore polished armor. At the center of the line strode Lord Avelen and Master Halwen both radiating confidence as if the outcome had already been decided.
Avelen stepped forward raising his voice. People of this district. This outsider has manipulated you with illusions. Mana machines are unstable and forbidden. Step aside and let the guild handle what you cannot understand.
No one moved. The silence became its own force.
Avelen scowled. Very well. He pointed at Ethan. You are under arrest for creation of unlicensed mana devices and inciting rebellion. Surrender peacefully or we will use force.
Ethan lifted his voice. You fear what you do not control. But this is not rebellion. This is the birth of energy. Energy for the people not just a privileged few.
Halwen slammed his staff on the ground. You twist words. Magic is the lifeblood of this continent. Without discipline without tradition we collapse into chaos. Your devices disrupt that balance.
Lira stepped forward. That is a lie. I studied the flow myself. His machines stabilize mana. They do not harm the environment.
Halwen’s eyes blazed with fury. You disgrace your order Lira. Stand down.
She shook her head. No. I stand for truth.
Varnel raised his hammer. And we stand for the right to work without collapse.
Avelen’s patience cracked. Enough If you protect the outsider then you stand against the nobility. You stand against the foundation of this kingdom.
A voice rose from the crowd. We stand for light Not darkness.
Another voice shouted. We stand for choice.
Soon the entire crowd chanted. Choice Choice Choice
Avelen raised his hand. Guards seize the device.
The noble guards stepped forward. But the townspeople surged as a single body blocking their path. They were untrained but unified. The guards hesitated unsure whether to attack civilians who outnumbered them ten to one.
Avelen growled at the guards. Move
But before they could take another step Ethan saw motion from the corner of his eye. The conversion unit inside the workshop pulsed with sudden intensity. The stabilizer glowed brighter than usual. A deep hum rattled the walls.
Ethan ran into the building. Lira followed close behind. Varnel shouted for workers to stand back as they entered.
The stabilizer shook violently. The crystal at its center pulsed faster than normal flickering with strain. Ethan muttered No no not now
Lira touched the frame and recoiled. The mana flow is unstable It feels like something is pushing against it from outside
A realization struck Ethan. The guild mages outside They were channeling suppression spells. Their coordinated mana field was interfering with the stabilizer forcing instability into its channels.
They are trying to make it explode Ethan said. If a unit fails they will claim it was dangerous all along.
Lira’s eyes widened. We must stabilize it before it collapses.
Ethan grabbed his tools. Hold the frame steady
She braced the metal ring as Ethan jammed open a panel and adjusted copper coils. Sweat dripped down his face. The hum deepened. Sparks shot from the crystal. The furnace flickered.
Outside the shouting rose. The crowd pushed against guards. Mages chanted spells. The blue glow outside wavered as mana currents collided.
Varnel yelled from the doorway Ethan They are coming inside
Hold them back Ethan shouted. Just a little more
The stabilizer screamed with energy. Lira strained to hold the frame steady. Her hands glowed as she channeled mana to dampen the fluctuations.
Ethan tightened one last plate turning it half an inch. The crystal steadied. The shaking slowed. The hum softened. The blue light returned to its normal gentle pulse.
Lira gasped with relief. You did it
But there was no time to rest. Three guild enforcers stormed into the workshop their staves glowing with suppression runes. One shouted Step away from the device
Varnel charged them with a hammer raised. Workers followed behind him yelling. The enforcers fired a spell. Varnel dodged rolling across the floor. The workers tackled the mages forcing them back.
Ethan shouted Do not damage the stabilizer
The struggle grew intense. Tools clashed against magic. Workers toppled barrels and tables creating barriers. The townspeople poured into the workshop overwhelming the guards.
Avelen’s furious voice boomed from outside. Enough This ends now
He stormed into the workshop raising his hand to cast a powerful suppression field. Mana crackled around him like a gathering storm.
Lira stepped in front of Ethan. You will not harm him
Avelen snarled Step aside girl
She shook her head.
Halwen entered behind Avelen. Together they prepared a massive spell designed to seize the stabilizer forcefully.
Ethan felt dread spike through him. That much concentrated mana would destroy the device and half the workshop.
He stood in front of the stabilizer arms spread. If you fire that spell you will hurt innocent people
Avelen answered Then surrender
Ethan shook his head. I will not
Avelen and Halwen unleashed their combined spell.
The room filled with blinding blue light.
The stabilizer pulsed violently.
Then everything went silent.
When the light faded Ethan opened his eyes slowly.
The stabilizer still stood.
Not destroyed.
Not damaged.
But changed.
The crystal at its heart now glowed with a deeper richer light. The device had absorbed the guild’s suppression spell instead of exploding. It had stabilized the disruptive mana turning a violent surge into a smooth flow.
Lira whispered in awe. Ethan It evolved
Halwen stared in shock. Impossible
Avelen stumbled back. What is that thing
Ethan placed his hand on the stabilizer. It felt calm. Warm. Controlled.
It felt like a breakthrough.
He looked at the guild forces outside.
He raised his voice.
This is not the end.
This is the first real power plant.
