The Arcane Power Company

Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Nov 17, 2025

The attack failed. The lamps across the Lower District glowed brighter than ever. People spilled into the streets cheering laughing hugging. It felt as if the entire district had woken from a long sleep. The grid held. The people held. And the guild’s authority cracked like old stone.

Ethan stood in the center of the street watching it unfold. A child tugged on his coat. Mister Ethan Look The lights stayed on

He smiled and patted the child's shoulder. They will stay on as long as we take care of them.

Varnel strode forward shouting over the noise. Ethan They want to thank you

The crowd parted forming a circle around Ethan. Families approached him one by one. A tailor bowed deeply. A baker shook his hand. A carpenter thanked him for the steady lamp that let him finish a table late last night. People brought small gifts bread fruit tools pots anything they could spare.

A mother stepped forward carrying a baby. She raised her voice so everyone could hear. For years I feared nights. Now my home is bright and safe. Thank you Ethan Rowe.

The crowd cheered.

Ethan felt heat rise in his chest. Not embarrassment. Not pride. Something deeper. A sense of responsibility.

He raised his hands gently. I accept your thanks. But this grid is not mine alone. We built it together. Every hammer strike every crystal cut every line carried and installed. This is our power. Not mine.

The people murmured in agreement.

But the celebration did not last long.

A horn sounded from the northern end of the district. Loud. Heavy. Cold.

The crowd fell silent.

Varnel cursed under his breath. Guild riders

Ethan and Lira rushed to the end of the street. A group of mounted noble guards approached carrying banners of deep crimson embroidered with the crest of the Avelen family.

At their front rode Lord Avelen himself.

His expression was carved from ice.

He stopped his horse several feet from Ethan. Behind him a group of mages formed a defensive formation. The message was clear. This was not diplomacy. It was pressure.

Avelen spoke in a calm cold tone. Ethan Rowe. Your actions have violated the ruling of the Mage Guild. You have illegally constructed multiple mana devices and installed them without authorization.

Ethan replied evenly. I built them to help people.

Avelen raised his chin. Intent does not excuse defiance. You will dismantle the grid immediately.

The entire district erupted in shouts.

No
We will not
Leave us alone

Avelen ignored the cries. His cold eyes fixed on Ethan. If you refuse the consequences will fall on the district not just you.

Lira stepped forward. That is extortion Avelen. You threaten civilians because you cannot control a new technology.

One of the noble guards barked Silence mage

Ethan spoke calmly. What do you want Avelen Truly

For the first time a crack of real emotion appeared in Avelen’s voice. Control he said quietly. Stability. Order. Your machines threaten centuries of tradition. They threaten the noble council’s power. They threaten the way mana is governed.

Ethan nodded slowly. Then the truth is simple. You fear a world you cannot dominate.

Avelen’s eyes darkened. And you fear a world where you must obey.

The tension thickened until the air felt solid.

Then Avelen lifted one hand. A mage passed him a scroll sealed with the mark of the royal administration.

He unfurled it.

By decree of the Crown the Arcane Power Prohibition Act is enacted effective immediately. All mana stabilizers devices converters and related mechanisms must be surrendered to the Mage Guild for confiscation. Unauthorized possession will result in imprisonment.

Gasps swept the district.

Even Lira staggered back. They moved this fast The crown never acts without months of debate

Avelen smiled grimly. Not when nobles demand immediate action.

Ethan understood. This was not just about the guild. This was about the noble council forcing the king’s hand. An entire government had now decided he was a threat.

Ethan took a breath. Deep. Steady.

Then he spoke loudly.

People of the Lower District The crown demands our grid. The guild demands our silence. Avelen demands our obedience. But every lamp in this street. Every furnace in these workshops. Every home that now has light. They all exist because you chose to build with me.

He paused letting the words sink in.

So now the choice belongs to you not to me.

Avelen snarled. Do not manipulate them

Ethan ignored him. He raised his fist.

Do we surrender our lights
Or do we protect our future

The answer erupted instantly.

Protect it
Protect the grid
We choose the light

The shouts reverberated through every street.

Varnel stepped forward. This district stands with Ethan Rowe.

The fire mage added. And so do many mages who are tired of being used.

Lira lifted her staff. And so do I.

Avelen’s face twisted with rage. You dare defy the crown

Ethan answered calmly.

We dare to build a better world.

Avelen raised his hand to signal the guards.

Then the Lower District is officially in rebellion.

The guards reached for their weapons.

The mages prepared suppression spells.

The people tightened their grips on tools and lantern poles.

And Ethan Rowe stood at the center of it all with fire in his eyes.

The first battle for the Arcane Grid was about to begin.
