The Lower District braced itself as Avelen raised his hand. Noble guards tightened their grips on swords. Guild enforcers prepared their staffs charging suppression runes that pulsed with cold blue light. The royal decree fluttered in Avelen’s fingers like a weapon sharper than steel. By its authority any resistance would be labeled treason.
But Ethan did not step back.
He stood at the front of the district his boots planted on cracked stone still lit by the grid he built. Lamps glowed along the streets like a chain of courage. Families huddled behind him. Workers stood with improvised shields made of scrap metal. Mages sympathetic to the grid stood ready with basic protective spells.
Lira whispered Ethan They will not hesitate this time
I know he said softly
Varnel gripped his hammer. Tell us what to do
Ethan looked around him. At the people he had come to respect. At the district that had found hope because of a stabilizer. He felt something anchor inside him. Not fear. Resolve. He raised his voice.
We cannot beat them with force he said. But we can beat them with unity. Protect the stabilizers. Guard the grid lines. And do not attack. Only defend.
Avelen scoffed. You speak like a leader of armies.
Ethan answered I speak like someone who believes in people
Avelen lowered his arm. Charge
The guards surged forward. Swords gleamed. Shields clattered. The people of the Lower District gasped but held their ground.
Varnel roared. Shields up
Workers lifted their makeshift shields forming a wall across the narrow street. The guards slammed into it. Metal screeched against metal. The line held but shook violently.
Lira stepped forward raising a glowing barrier spell. The shimmering shield spread across the front line blocking suppression bolts fired by guild enforcers. Sparks scattered across the air like shattered stars.
She gritted her teeth. I cannot hold this forever
Ethan yelled Hold the line Stay together
In the workshop behind them apprentices guarded the main stabilizer. The crystal pulsed strong but vulnerable. Any strike there would take down the entire grid.
Suddenly a group of guild mages broke from the rear and began casting long range pulses aimed at grid lines that ran along the rooftops.
Ethan sprinted toward them. Stop He dove behind a stone pillar as a bolt of energy hit the ground beside him spraying debris. He grabbed a coil rod from the street and struck the nearest mage knocking him off balance.
You dare attack mages Halwen shouted
Ethan answered If you strike the grid you strike the people
Halwen raised his staff and released a wave of pure suppression. Ethan was thrown back crashing into a wall. Pain shot up his ribs. Halwen approached slowly a storm of mana swirling around him.
You have forced our hand outsider he said. You turned the city against the guild. You will collapse this kingdom
Ethan groaned and pushed himself up. I am not collapsing anything. I am building something new
Halwen snarled. A world without mages
Ethan met his gaze. A world where mages are free to choose not enslaved to furnaces
Halwen's magic faltered for a second. That hesitation gave Ethan time to roll aside as another bolt shattered the ground where he stood.
Lira appeared beside him. Ethan Are you hurt
I am fine he lied
She grabbed his arm. We need to protect the secondary stabilizers. The guild is targeting them
Ethan nodded. Go to the eastern line I will hold here
She dashed away weaving through smoke and sparks.
Back at the main street the workers struggled to hold the shield wall. The guards pressed hard. Swords clanged against metal. People shouted. The district groaned under the pressure.
Then something shifted.
A bright blue flash erupted from the rooftops. The new stabilizers lit up all at once sending pulses down the channels. The grid hummed louder than before. The lamps brightened. For a moment the entire district seemed to breathe.
Varnel shouted That is the grid talking back We are not losing
The workers roared with renewed strength pushing the guard line back step by step.
Avelen watched with disbelief. How is this possible You are untrained You are unorganized You are nothing but commoners
Ethan limped toward him. That is what you never understood. Common people do not need permission to change their lives
Avelen raised his sword. If the guild will not break you then I will
He struck. Ethan dodged just barely. The blade scraped across the stone sending sparks flying. Ethan stumbled back with no weapon except a broken coil in his hand. Avelen swung again. Ethan parried weakly. The noble’s strength was overwhelming.
You built lights Avelen snapped Not courage Not loyalty Not true power
Ethan blocked another strike feeling the vibration rattle up his arm. I built choice he gasped
Avelen thrust forward. Ethan jumped aside but the blade grazed his shoulder tearing through his shirt. Pain flared. He fell to one knee.
Avelen raised his sword for the final blow.
Then a hammer slammed into his blade knocking it from his hand.
Varnel stepped forward roaring Leave him alone
Avelen staggered back. The guards rushed to him but Varnel’s workers surged into the space bodies locking into a wall of resolve.
Lira returned breathless. The eastern stabilizers held The grid is stable
Ethan stood shakily. Then we are winning
Halwen shouted Retreat Step back The stabilizers will not break
The guild mages hesitated. The guards looked unsure. The district roared louder like a rising tide. The grid lights pulsed as if celebrating.
Avelen’s face twisted with disbelief and rage.
This is not over he growled
He signaled his men. The guards slowly withdrew. The mages followed. The noble banners lowered. The guild forces retreated out of the Lower District.
The people cheered. Families hugged. Children danced under the lamps. Workers lifted Ethan onto their shoulders shouting his name.
Ethan Rowe
Ethan Rowe
Lira wiped tears from her eyes. You did it Ethan. You saved the district
Ethan shook his head gently. We did it
But even as the celebration swelled he felt a shadow deep in his chest. Avelen would return. The guild would not accept defeat. And the crown had labeled him a criminal.
The first battle was won.
But the real war for the Arcane Grid had only just begun.
