The royal soldiers marched down the dock with the sound of boots striking wood in perfect rhythm. The air shook with each step. Their formation was tight their armor polished their spears raised in a single wall of steel. This was not a patrol force. This was a military unit sent to crush resistance swiftly and decisively.
Behind Ethan the fishermen craftsmen and families of the Riverfront district formed an uneven line of determination. They had no armor. No training. No weapons. Only tools nets ropes and hope that had awakened only minutes earlier.
Ethan stepped forward so the soldiers could see him clearly. The commander a hard faced man with a shaved head and a cloak bearing the symbol of the crown stopped several paces away.
He shouted I am Captain Arthen of the Royal Guard. By authority of the king all unauthorized mana devices in this district are to be confiscated immediately. Resistance will be met with force.
His tone held no malice. Only duty. That almost made it worse.
Ethan raised his voice. Captain These people only want light. Heat. Safety. Your orders will plunge the Riverfront back into darkness.
Captain Arthen replied His Majesty has been informed that your devices destabilize the city’s mana field. It is my duty to maintain order.
Lira stepped to Ethan’s side. That is a lie spread by the guild. These stabilizers produce more order not less.
The captain did not respond. Instead he motioned for three soldiers to move forward.
The crowd tensed. A fisherman shouted Stand your ground
Ethan lifted his hand. Do not attack. Do not provoke. We are not fighting them.
Varnel muttered under his breath Then what are we doing
Ethan whispered We are protecting the people without becoming what the nobles want us to be.
The soldiers approached the stabilizer Ethan had just installed. Lira stepped in front of it her eyes glowing with mana. The soldiers hesitated but their orders were clear. They raised their spears.
Ethan stepped beside her. If you strike that device you will break the only light these people have had in years.
Captain Arthen walked closer. His eyes narrowed. If you stand in my way I will be forced to restrain you.
Ethan replied calmly. Then restrain me. But do not harm these people.
A murmur ran through the soldiers. Some looked uncertain. This was not the rebellion they imagined. There were no armed fighters here. No violent uprising. Only citizens standing in front of a glowing stabilizer.
Arthen clenched his jaw. You place me in an impossible position.
Lira took a step forward. You have a choice Captain. Obey a decree built on fear. Or protect a district that has suffered long enough.
Arthen hesitated. A flicker of doubt crossed his face.
Then Avelen’s voice cut through the air like a blade. Enough hesitation Captain
Everyone turned.
Avelen strode down the docks wearing noble armor crafted from polished mana steel. His cloak billowed dramatically in the sea wind. Behind him marched a squad of elite guards carrying banners of the noble council.
He pointed directly at Ethan. Arrest him now
Captain Arthen stiffened. My orders come from the crown not from you Lord Avelen
Avelen’s voice turned cold. The crown follows the advice of the noble council. And the council demands that this outsider be silenced before his poisonous ideas spread any further.
Ethan frowned. Poisonous ideas like giving people light
Avelen snapped Light that we do not control is chaos. A world where the commoner can wield power independent of nobility is a world without order.
Behind Ethan the crowd growled in anger.
Ethan stepped forward. You and the guild have treated mana as a weapon of power for centuries. But mana is energy. And energy belongs to everyone.
Avelen’s eyes burned with hatred. Enough of this. Guards seize the stabilizer and take him
He slashed the air with his hand and elite guards moved forward.
Ethan shouted Now
Varnel and the Riverfront workers pulled thick ropes they had hidden behind crates. Dozens of crates toppled forward spilling nets barrels and fishing poles across the dock. The guards tripped unable to maneuver in tight spaces.
Lira raised her staff creating a shimmering barrier between the soldiers and the stabilizer.
Captain Arthen grimaced. He did not want bloodshed but Avelen forced the situation.
Avelen shouted Break through
The soldiers lowered their spears and advanced as one.
Ethan yelled Hold the line Protect the stabilizer
The Riverfront district locked arms forming a wall of bodies. They held ropes nets and poles like improvised shields. The soldiers crashed against them. People stumbled. But they did not break.
Avelen pointed at Lira. You traitor Stand down
She answered Only when you stop harming your own people
Avelen snarled unleashing a bolt of mana at her barrier. The impact shook the dock. The barrier flickered.
Lira cried out Ethan This barrier will not hold if they attack in full force
Ethan looked around. There was only one option.
He ran to the stabilizer and touched the crystal. Energy flowed up his arm like a river of warmth and pressure.
Lira yelled Ethan No Your body cannot channel this
He grit his teeth. I am not channeling mana I am stabilizing it
He adjusted the flow by hand letting the stabilizer pulse outward. Blue light radiated across the dock. The lamps brightened. The mana field strengthened.
Avelen staggered. What is he doing
Lira’s voice rose in awe. He is making the stabilizer anchor the entire area
Captain Arthen looked between Ethan and the soldiers. The mana pressure made it difficult to cast aggressive spells. The field had become neutral ground.
Avelen roared This is impossible
Ethan kept his hand on the stabilizer breathing hard. This grid belongs to the people. Not to you. Not to the guild. Not to the crown.
Avelen screamed Soldiers Take him
The soldiers hesitated again. The crowd pressed harder against the line. The stabilizer pulsed like a heartbeat.
Then something unexpected happened.
The old fisherman stepped forward waving his cane. Enough
The crowd parted.
He faced the soldiers. My home was dark for years. My son died tripping in a dark warehouse. My wife lost her sight from working under bad lanterns. And now this man brings us light. If you want to take it you will have to step over me first.
Another man stepped next to him. Me too
A woman joined. And me
Soon dozens stood beside them forming a second wall.
Captain Arthen stared at the civilians. He lowered his spear slowly. My orders are to keep peace. Not to wage war on innocent people.
Avelen shouted You are defying the noble council
Arthen replied I am protecting citizens under the crown
Avelen’s face twisted with rage. He raised his hand to cast a spell himself.
But he never finished it.
A great tremor shook the dock as the stabilizer surged with light. Ethan stepped back shocked as the crystal resonated with a deep harmonious hum.
Lira gasped Ethan It is evolving again It is forming a district scale field
The field expanded. Soft blue light swept across the Riverfront district stabilizing mana in every direction. Lanterns lit themselves. Tools sparked with gentle flows. The entire district glowed.
Everyone stared in silence.
Avelen growled. This is unacceptable He turned to his guards Retreat We will crush them another way
The elite guards retreated. Captain Arthen saluted the people silently before withdrawing his soldiers with calm dignity.
Avelen vanished into the night consumed by fury.
The Riverfront erupted in cheers. Children danced beneath the glowing lamps. Workers lifted Ethan onto their shoulders shouting his name.
Lira wiped her eyes. You did it Ethan. You extended the grid to an entire district
He whispered hoarsely No We all did
He looked across the glowing Riverfront.
And he understood that this night had changed everything.
The Arcane Grid was now too large to erase.
But he also understood something else.
Avelen would return stronger.
Much stronger.
