The Arcane Power Company

Chapter 20

Chapter 20

Nov 17, 2025

Preparation for the continental grid began at sunrise. The Lower District buzzed louder than a festival. Dozens of stabilizer frames lay on the ground waiting to be assembled. Crystals were etched polished and tested. Workers carried heavy beams through the streets. Mages carved runes into stone plates for grounding mana lines. The Riverfront sent fishermen to help lift metal beams with ropes and pulleys.

Standing at the center of the district was the foundation for their greatest project yet.

The Tower of First Light.

It would be the first mana relay tower ever built in the kingdom. A structure tall enough to channel ambient mana from the sky and distribute it through the grid. It would stabilize long routes much farther than district boundaries. It would allow energy to flow across continents.

Varnel walked around the foundation inspecting the beams. This tower will need to be twice as strong as anything we built before. If it collapses so will the entire grid route.

Ethan nodded. Build it with reinforced iron. Use the copper weave pattern Lira designed. And anchor the base with crystal rods.

Lira approached holding a stack of diagrams. The tower will collect high altitude mana. We need directional channels at each level. And the top must hold a resonance crystal capable of synchronizing with all stabilizers nearby.

Ethan grinned. So in short. Something impossible.

Lira smiled back. Yes. But we have done the impossible before.

Serra stepped forward carrying a small wooden box. I brought something from the Western Territories. A gift from the villagers.

Ethan opened the box. Inside was a large crystal unlike any they had used. Its surface shimmered with faint colors shifting from gold to blue to silver. It hummed softly as if alive.

Lira gasped. This is a resonance core They are extremely rare. I heard stories of such crystals buried in old ruins. How did they find it

Serra said The villagers found it half buried near old stone pillars. They said if you want to bring light to the continent this crystal must sit at the heart of it.

Ethan held the crystal in both hands. It vibrated with a gentle steady pulse.

He whispered Then we build the tower around this

Work began immediately. Workers raised tall wooden scaffolding. Mages reinforced beams with mana. Children carried small tools. Families prepared food for everyone. The tower rose level by level until it stood taller than any building in the district.

People gathered for the installation of the core. Ethan climbed the scaffolding with Lira and Varnel by his side. Below the entire district watched.

Ethan held the crystal up. The sunlight caught its surface making it glow with soft iridescent light.

Lira placed her hands on it channeling mana gently. The crystal responded humming like a living heart. Varnel steadied the frame.

Ethan whispered For the people of every district For every village For the world

He placed the crystal into the socket at the top of the tower.

The moment it touched the metal channels something incredible happened.

A wave of blue gold light shot upward spiraling into the sky like a beacon. The tower pulsed. The stabilizers across the Lower District glowed brighter. Lamps along the streets shimmered. The Riverfront grid hum strengthened across the water.

The people gasped in awe.

A fisherman shouted It is beautiful

Children yelled The tower woke up

The fire mage whispered This is more than a relay tower Ethan. This is a symbol. A promise

Lira looked at Ethan tears gathering in her eyes. You did it

But Ethan shook his head. We did it

As the light faded into the sky he climbed down to the cheering crowd.

But the celebration was cut short.

A runner sprinted into the square breathless.

Ethan The nobles are gathering at the capital They are calling a council of war They plan to crush the grid before it spreads farther

Lira’s face tightened. The crown is preparing military action

Varnel slammed his fist into his palm. Let them come We have the tower We have the grid

Ethan looked up at the Tower of First Light shining in the sun.

He knew the nobles would not allow this revolution to continue. Not without a fight.

He whispered quietly But now the world stands with us

He turned to his people.

Then we finish the continental line Before they march

The Arcane Power Company roared in agreement.

And the first light of the tower marked the beginning of the greatest race the kingdom had ever seen.
