Lewiston Lee: All the Lost Boys

A Time to Collect

A Time to Collect

Dec 03, 2025

All of his bags were finally packed. It had been a few hours since Lewiston had gunned down Sawyer in the street. Sheriff Herman did a good job of settling everyone down and letting Lewiston leave, but there were still quite a few Landen family members in Atwood, so Lewiston thought it was best that he leave town immediately before anyone else got the idea to try something.

A knock was heard at the door and Lewiston instinctively reached for his pistol before saying, "Who is it?"

"It's me," a soft feminine voice said on the other side of the door. Lewiston walked over to the door and opened it. Standing at the door was Mrs. Eva Harper. She looked up at Lewiston and asked, "Can I come in?"

She took a couple steps inside and looked around as Lewiston shut the door. He watched her walk around the room as she took in what was happening. After looking at the packed bags, she looked back at him and said, "I see that you're leaving."

"My job is done," he said, "There's no reason for me to stay."

"No reason?" she asked, turning her whole body towards him and gave him a flirty look. He laughed and answered back, "None but one I suppose."

Eva walked up to him. She looked up at him with just her eyes as she said, "What's the matter? Scared of a little trouble?"

"I do like me some trouble."

Acting like she was in charge, she turned away from him and walked over to the writing desk that sat on the side of the room and picked up a pen and paper. She brought them over to the table where Lewiston's packed bags were and set them down. She turned back around and pointed at the paper.

"Write down your address," She commanded.

"You want to write to me?"

"Maybe," She responded. "Or maybe I need a change of scenery."

"Are you saying you want to live with me?" He questioned.

"Not quite, but being close to you doesn't sound that bad."

"What about your family?"

"I have no relationship with my family," She answered plainly. "My uncle ran this family and well, you took care of him. It's alright though. I hated my uncle and I hate this town because my uncle is all over it and now I'm sure there's going to be a power struggle of some sort now that he's gone and well..."

"You don't care who wins."

"Correct."

"So if you hated your uncle so badly, then why did you help him?" Lewiston asked.

"Because family is family," She said. "I felt I had an obligation. My cousin, the boy who died, he was a sweet boy. I don't think he much liked being a Landen, but he was stuck with this family. Kind of like me. So in the end, I didn't do this for my uncle, I did this for him."

"I understand."

This relationship between them was based on lies, but here they were, being honest with each other. Showing a side that neither of them had really shown to someone else before. It was Eva who first realized what was happening and she was beginning to care. So she interrupted the moment by saying, "You should get going now. I just thought I'd warn you that you might be seeing me again soon."

Lewiston nodded and quietly gathered his bags and headed to the door. Before he left, he turned around and asked Eva, "Are you falling in love with me?"

"Always asking the big questions, aren't we, Mr. Lee?"

"I'm a lawyer. It's what I do." Lewiston said and he walked out the door.

Eva dropped her head. She stood in the empty boarding room and listened to the silence grow. Once again, she found herself alone. She figured it was best to get used to that feeling again.

Suddenly, her loneliness was interrupted as Lewiston burst through the door and dropped his bags. Before Eva could even process what was happening, Lewiston grabbed her by the waist and brought her in and kissed her.

It was the next day that Lewiston rode his horse back to his former school and saddled it up at the front gate once again. This time he didn't wait for any type of welcoming. He marched past the nuns, up the stairs and walked right into the Headmaster's office.

"Headmaster!" He said, announcing himself, "I have come for my reward!"

The Headmaster sat at his desk, signing away on his documents. He looked up at his unannounced visitor and gave him a surly look.

"And what makes you think you deserve it?" He asked.

"Deserve it?" Lewiston questioned. "I did what you asked me to do."

"He died!" The headmaster said, looking up from his papers.

"He died an innocent man. The reputation of your precious school is still intact."

Enraged, the headmaster stood up and stared at Lewiston as he said, "You think you're so clever!"

"Because of your schooling." Lewiston responded.

"Go to hell!" The headmaster said and sat back down. He realized he was never going to win a war of words with a lawyer.

Lewiston walked over to the headmaster's desk and sat on it. Annoyed, the headmaster looked up as his former student pulled out a cigarette and stuck it in his mouth.

"You know it's a sin to lie?" Lewiston said.

"It's a sin to kill."

"Wasn't my bullet," Lewiston said as he lit his cigarette and put the rest of his matches away. "Read the doctor's report. My bullet looks like this."

Lewiston then pulled out his pistol and pointed it at the headmaster's head. The headmaster leaned back in surprise, but still managed to keep calm as he asked, "What are you doing?"

"Negotiating."

The headmaster stared down the dark barrel of the pistol. Lewiston kept absolutely still as he continued to point his pistol. The only thing moving was the smoke coming off his cigarette. Without saying a word, the headmaster reached over with his left arm and opened the top drawer.

"I guess there's no way to truly domesticate the red man," the headmaster said as he tossed a file onto the desk. Lewiston looked down and saw that the file read, David Lee. Lewiston stood up and put his pistol away. He picked up the file and quickly flipped through it.

Lewiston looked over at the headmaster with just his eyes and asked, "Is this everything?"

"Everything we had. He wasn't here long."

Lewiston flipped through the file a little bit more.

"You sent him to the next state over," Lewiston read.

"Yes," The headmaster coldly acknowledged. "Good luck."

Lewiston closed the file and turned on his heel and headed straight to the door.

"Thank you for holding up your end of the deal! And please, if you need anything else," he turned around as he got to the door and looked at the headmaster one last time and said, "Call someone else."

With that Lewiston walked out and slammed the door. The headmaster sat there in anger as the echo of the door slamming bounced around the room.

A familiar boy sat at the corner of the schoolyard wall.

A few days ago, he was free, but now he was caught and covered in bruises. It seemed to him that his suffering was never going to end and if he had any sense he should just give up and let starvation take him like it did to so many of his classmates.

Just then, his thoughts were interrupted as a curious top hat rolled over to him. The hat stopped rolling, a few feet away from him. The boy instinctively crawled over to the hat and picked it up. It looked familiar. He knew that he had seen that hat before.

"I see you found my hat," The boy heard a voice say. He looked up as a shadow fell over him. To his surprise, it was that well dressed nishnabe he met in Atwood. He was shocked. He wasn't expecting to ever see him again and just stared at him. Gently, the lawyer knelt down in front of the boy and asked, "Can I have my hat back?"

The boy snapped out of his daze and nodded. He brought the hat in front of him and presented it with both hands. The boy's eyes grew big as the lawyer took the hat, because while he was taking the hat, the boy felt something being slipped into his pocket.

With a wink and a smile the lawyer stood up and told the boy, "Thank you, young man. Good day."

Without another word, the lawyer gave the boy a nod and left. The stunned boy went back to the corner of the schoolyard and sat against the wall. He carefully looked around and saw there were no nuns or teachers in sight. Unable to wait any longer, the boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver pocket watch. The one the lawyer tried to give him in Atwood. He quickly opened the pocket watch and saw the smiley face that was drawn on the inside lid. For the first time in a long time, he was excited. He was happy and as he looked at that watch. He couldn't help but smile.
