The Arcane Securities Exchange

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Nov 22, 2025

Evan Hale stood in the middle of a crowded brick road that buzzed with the heat of magic flowing beneath the ground The air shimmered with drifting particles of mana as if tiny stars were floating between the people Every step he took sent faint ripples through the glowing lines carved across the street like a city wired with living veins The buildings rose high above him carved in marble and dark stone with sigils that pulsed like the steady beat of a heart He had been in strange places before when he traveled for work evaluating volatile markets and building models for unpredictable systems but nothing ever prepared him for a city where the infrastructure literally glowed with magic

At first he thought it was a hallucination or a concussion from the odd flash he saw in his apartment minutes earlier His laptop had gone dark then a violent surge of light engulfed everything and in the blink of an eye he found himself here Boots instead of carpet Magic instead of electricity And an entire city that looked like the Renaissance collided with a fantasy role playing guidebook He took a breath and it felt thick like air infused with warm energy His chest tingled slightly with each inhale and he wondered if this world had mana density like a measurable environmental variable

He approached a stall where a bearded merchant arranged glass vials filled with swirling blue liquid The liquid moved even without being shaken as if responding to invisible currents Evan recognized the merchant counting coins and realized no one used paper notes let alone digital currency He asked quietly Sir what is that blue liquid The merchant looked up surprised at his modern clothing which already made Evan look foreign He said This is raw mana condensation from the Crystal Ridge It can power staves enchantments tripwire wards or even small furnaces if you burn it correctly

Evan asked How much does the price change day by day The merchant frowned Day by day It changes whenever the Crystal Ridge storms or when the mages fight near the ridge or when the beast caravans get delayed Why Every day is different Evan froze This world had high volatility in its fundamental resource the literal energy that powered everything Yet there was no consistent pricing tool no futures no hedging no risk management The merchant kept talking Sometimes it costs three silver for a vial Sometimes it costs ten No one knows what next week will look like

Evan looked around analyzing the market the way he always did when landing in a new environment People traveled with carts full of mana gems glowing with internal fire Merchants bartered ingredients for spells Smiths bought enchanted metals from sorcerers Teams of adventurers carried beast parts that looked valuable but no standardized pricing existed for anything at all He kept hearing phrases like Hope the price stays low tomorrow or I bought it too early or We will lose everything if the ridge storms again

This world was raw unstable full of opportunity but collapsing under uncertainty Without a functioning financial structure high mana volatility would cripple every guild and industry Evan felt the gears in his head begin to turn His instinct for structural gaps triggered immediately like a sixth sense This world had supply and demand but no instruments to stabilize anything No baseline index No derivatives No market clearing rules No liquidity networks People relied on intuition instead of cal

He needed information So he walked deeper into the city toward the smell of burning mana Sparks drifted into the air as an entire street of glassworkers used glowing wands to fuse crystal shards into enchanted containers Their pricing arguments filled the air One shouted The ridge storms again The price will triple tomorrow Another shouted No the mages cleared the ridge yesterday You fool the price will drop

Evan asked quietly If prices change so much how do you hedge The workers stared at him as if he spoke another language A tall woman with braided hair asked Hedge what I mean how do you protect against price swings He clarified For example if the cost of raw mana rises tomorrow how do you avoid losing money today The workers burst into laughter Someone shouted That is impossible unless you can predict the future

Yet he noticed something deeper The workers were not stupid They had deep experience just no tools They needed something He whispered Futures contracts They would need futures

He felt the realization strike him hard He was standing in a world ripe for structured financial innovation where the difference between chaos and prosperity was a simple set of principles Price discovery Contract standardization Index creation Margin rules He had built these models countless times for clients back home He had helped design financial systems where volatility ruined entire sectors and the only solution was to create tools that gave structure to chaos

A voice interrupted him You look lost stranger Evan turned to see a young woman dressed in layered robes embroidered with runes She carried scrolls and crystal slates under her arm and she observed him with cautious curiosity I am Lyra apprentice mage economist for the Arcanum Registry What are you doing asking strange questions about price swings Evan hesitated The truth was unbelievable but he had no better explanation I am a type of scholar I study unpredictable markets and create systems that allow people to understand risk

Lyra blinked Risk systems No one here studies that We only measure mana density and trade records If you have ideas the Registry might want to hear them We are drowning in unstable prices and poorly tracked resources Even the royal treasury cannot forecast next year’s budget This world is too volatile

Her words struck him again Volatile prices treasury instability inconsistent budgeting Everything screamed for institutional reform Everything screamed for structure And structure required a market Not simple bartering Not shouting matches between guilds But a real exchange with rules transparency and financial tools

Lyra waved her hand Come with me I can bring you to someone who understands numbers They might understand your ideas Evan followed her through a maze of glowing corridors until they reached a hall filled with floating tablets spinning around with archived mana flow data Lyra whispered This world has magic but no true economic science If you can help change that then maybe you arrived here for a reason

Evan placed his hand on one of the floating tablets as data streams glowed beneath his fingers Real volatility Magic as an asset Mana as a commodity Raw information begging to be structured He felt a slow determined smile form One idea blossomed fully in his mind an idea powerful enough to reshape the entire world

A securities exchange A place where magic becomes measurable predictable tradable And for the first time ever Rogue volatility would be tamed by engineered structure
