The next morning arrived with an eerie stillness No merchants shouting No miners arguing No apprentices rushing across the plaza The entire area around the Arcane Securities Exchange felt unnaturally quiet Even the mana-lanterns flickered at half strength as though exhausted from the previous day’s clash between truth and manipulation
Evan and Lyra walked together toward the exchange entrance The atmosphere felt thick like the city itself held its breath Lyra murmured I do not like this Evan The whole plaza feels wrong Evan nodded quietly It feels staged Like the calm before a coordinated move
They stepped inside The hall was empty except for guards and early arriving scholars Everyone moved cautiously eyes darting toward shadows Evan approached the central display panel preparing to activate the index for pre market activity
Then the dome lights flickered once twice then extinguished entirely The hall plunged into dim blue twilight lit only by residual mana trapped in the floor runes Several scholars gasped Guards drew weapons instinctively Lyra shouted The dome is losing power
Evan raced toward the clearing chamber runes He knelt scanning the mana pathways The ley lines were intact The protective matrix was intact The runes were intact Something else was cutting the power Not from the ley source but from the dome itself
Lyra pointed upward Evan looked The crystal plates making up the dome shifted as if something pressed against them The runes around the dome flashed erratically then died one by one A shadow passed across the surface like smoke coiling around glass
Evan whispered Someone is inside the dome
Suddenly a voice echoed across the hall amplified by magic Calm and cold The voice of someone who believed they had already won You built a structure that threatens centuries of influence You bring transparency to a world that thrives on secrecy You were warned The exchange ends today
The consortium had arrived in person
Before anyone could answer the shadows inside the dome erupted in violent arcs of energy Bolts of chaotic mana shot down into the trading floor The runes scrambled The clearing chamber overloaded with wild pulses Scholars scattered Guards raised barriers Mages braced themselves
Evan shouted Lyra with me They sprinted toward the stairway leading to the upper access level The energy blasts intensified cracking several outer crystal plates The dome itself groaned under the pressure If it shattered everyone inside would be devastated by falling mana shards
On the stairs Lyra gasped Evan look He looked The attackers were not mages but enchanted constructs humanoid figures made of metal and bone wrapped in shadow magic They crawled across the inner dome plates carving lines into the runes Their purpose was clear Remove the rune sequences and the dome would collapse
Lyra whispered Constructs This is a military level attack Evan replied Someone with enormous resources built them This is no longer sabotage or manipulation This is war
They reached the upper walkway along the dome interior Evan grabbed a fallen spear from a guard and jabbed it into the nearest construct The spear glanced off its reinforced plating The construct turned its hollow glowing eyes toward him and lunged
Lyra cast a disabling glyph The glyph struck the creature’s back causing the runes animating it to flicker It stumbled but did not fall These constructs were made to dismantle magical structures They resisted destabilization
Another construct crawled toward the walkway Evan ducked as it swung a jagged limb The walkway shook A third construct joined it scratching deep into the dome’s plates The sound was a screech of metal against crystal A sound meant to break concentration and morale
Lyra shouted They are targeting the rune alignment If they break the tri sequence the dome will implode Evan asked Where is the tri sequence center Lyra pointed Up there The highest point of the dome A glowing crystal node pulsating weakly like a dying star
Three constructs were climbing toward it
If they reached the node the exchange would cease to exist
Evan shouted Go I will hold them Lyra froze for a heartbeat then obeyed sprinting along the walkway toward the highest point Evan grabbed a metal support rod and swung it at the nearest construct The rod cracked against its plating sending it back slightly The second construct lunged Evan barely dodged rolling across the walkway The third climbed past trying to reach the node Evan grabbed its leg and pulled The construct slipped but clung to the dome with its other limbs
Below them the trading hall thundered with panic and defensive spells
Lyra reached the node just as the first construct crawled onto the crystal surface It raised its blade arm to strike Lyra planted her hands onto the surface and shouted a sealing incantation she had learned only weeks ago Runes spread across the crystal like a silver web freezing the node temporarily
The construct slammed its blade down The sealing web cracked but held
Evan roared and jammed the metal rod into the joint of the second construct’s spine Sparks flew It convulsed collapsing momentarily The first construct turned toward him giving Lyra a second to reinforce the seal Another web spread over the node strengthening the structure
But the third construct was still climbing The dome creaked dangerously Dark cracks spread across one of the lower plates Evan shouted Lyra we do not have long
From below the chief councilor screamed Reinforce the outer runes Mages cast beams of stabilizing mana upward but the constructs disrupted the flow causing the beams to scatter
The third construct reached the node It raised both arms to carve into the crystal
Lyra threw her entire mana reserve into the rune web The crystal glowed blinding white For a moment everything froze Even the constructs hesitated
Evan seized the one second window He charged driving the metal rod straight into the construct’s central rune core A burst of blue light exploded The construct shrieked in a soundless cry and fell backward off the dome shattering into metal fragments on the hall floor
The shock tore cracks across the dome Yet the node held
Lyra collapsed from exhaustion Evan caught her before she fell He whispered You held the dome Lyra breathed weakly And you destroyed their anchor
The voice returned across the hall calm but furious This is not the end You will not win
Evan looked upward at the damaged dome blocks of crystal fractured runes barely holding mana in place The exchange had survived but was grievously wounded
He carried Lyra down to the trading floor Guards and mages rushed to secure the perimeter Evacuation began immediately Scholars pulled data tablets from the clearing chamber ensuring no records were lost The mana lights flickered sporadically but did not die
The chief councilor approached shaken but determined The consortium showed themselves today Evan They revealed their ambition and their desperation Evan nodded And now the entire kingdom saw it
He looked around The dome was cracked but standing The runes were damaged but functioning The exchange had been attacked directly and lived
Lyra whispered through heavy breaths Evan the people saw what happened They will not fear the market anymore They will fear the ones who tried to destroy it
Evan placed a hand on the floor feeling its faint heartbeat The Arcane Securities Exchange had survived its darkest hour And now the world would decide whose side it stood on
