The sun hung low in the sky casting long shadows across the corridor where Ethan and his allies waited. Citizens gathered outside the tribunal hall murmuring about the demonstration. Some declared Ethan a visionary. Others called him a threat to tradition. The air swirled with tension as though the city itself struggled between its past and its future. Ethan paced slowly trying to steady his thoughts. Sera stood beside him silent but determined. Haldric leaned against a pillar glaring at anyone who looked unfriendly. Drienne reviewed her scrolls methodically though her expression betrayed her worry. Mira carried herself with quiet resolve.
Time stretched painfully. Ethan wondered what arguments filled the council chamber. He imagined Voren insisting on banning the device. He imagined more open minded councilors pushing back. He imagined the struggle between fear and hope playing out behind closed doors. He wished he could be inside to defend the truth. But he also understood that the decision was no longer his alone. It rested on the hearts of those who had witnessed the device at work.
Finally the heavy doors opened. The head councilor stepped out with a solemn expression. Voren stood beside him looking like a man whose victory had unraveled. The councilor called Ethan forward. The crowd fell silent. Even the mana in the air seemed to still.
The councilor announced that the tribunal acknowledged the undeniable accuracy and usefulness of the Arcane Scan System. Ethan felt a breath release from his chest. Sera’s eyes brightened. The councilor continued saying the device demonstrated potential to support healers and improve patient safety. Murmurs of relief spread across the hall.
But then the councilor’s voice grew colder. He said that despite the device’s value Ethan had acted outside Guild oversight and introduced an unregulated technology. The council ruled that although the device would not be destroyed Ethan was forbidden from using or developing it until the Guild completed a formal assessment. The assessment could take years. Voren smiled cruelly. The audience erupted in confusion. Some shouted support for Ethan. Others shouted warnings about challenging the Guild.
Sera stepped forward demanding an explanation. She asked how the council could acknowledge the device’s value but still forbid its use. The councilor replied that innovation required control. He said unregulated devices could destabilize healing practices and threaten the balance of mana. He declared that only after full Guild approval could the device be used. Ethan’s heart tightened. He realized the council wanted to steal time time that would allow them to control or bury the device.
Drienne protested saying the Guild had suppressed research for decades. Mira added that healers needed tools now not in ten years. Haldric slammed his fist on the floor demanding justice. The council ordered silence. Guild enforcers stepped forward ready to enforce the ruling.
Ethan raised his hand urging his allies to stop. He approached the council calmly though his pulse raced. He asked one final question. He asked whether the Guild intended to recreate the device themselves. The councilor hesitated. His silence was answer enough. Ethan understood. The Guild intended to claim the invention while silencing its creator.
The councilor declared the tribunal adjourned. Enforcers approached Ethan ordering him to hand over the Arcane Scan System. Ethan stood still gripping the protective casing. He felt Sera’s hand tighten around his arm. Mira whispered for him not to give up. Drienne’s eyes burned with anger. Haldric stood ready to fight.
The enforcers repeated their command.
Ethan made his choice.
He stepped back refusing to surrender the device. Gasps filled the hall. Voren shouted for the enforcers to seize him. Sera moved in front of Ethan. Haldric drew a metal bar from his toolbox. Drienne raised her hand gathering a controlled surge of mana. Mira joined them standing between Ethan and the enforcers.
The council ordered restraint but the enforcers advanced.
Ethan felt the rings inside the casing pulse gently as though sensing the danger.
He understood then that the device would change the world.
But only if he protected it.
As enforcers drew closer Ethan whispered to his allies.
He said they needed to escape.
Because the Guild would silence progress at any cost.
And the Arcane Scan System must survive.
