The shouts of Guild enforcers echoed through the tribunal hall as Ethan stepped backward gripping the protective casing of the Arcane Scan System against his chest. The polished marble floor reflected the chaos unfolding as healers gasped and citizens scrambled toward the exits. Sera pressed her hand against Ethan’s back urging him to move. Haldric raised his metal bar with a fierce growl, standing as a shield between Ethan and the approaching enforcers. Drienne positioned herself strategically near the hall’s mana lanterns. Mira stood beside the others her eyes filled with determination despite the fear trembling along her fingers.
The enforcers advanced in tight formation their mana blades forming pale arcs of shimmering force. Voren barked orders commanding them to seize the device before the outsider escaped. Ethan knew that if they reached him the device would be confiscated and buried under Guild control. All the months of work every life the device had helped all the progress waiting to unfold would vanish under the weight of fear and authority.
Sera grabbed Ethan’s arm and whispered that they had only one option: break through the side corridor and reach the lower streets. She had come to Ardin many times as a healer and knew the layout. Ethan nodded trusting her instincts. He shouted to Haldric who immediately shifted position blocking the enforcers’ first path. Drienne raised her hands and struck the nearest mana lantern sending a controlled surge of light flooding the hall. The burst momentarily blinded the enforcers giving Ethan and Sera a narrow opening.
They sprinted across the hall weaving between pillars. Mira followed closely guiding them toward the side exit. Ethan held the casing tightly feeling the rings pulse irregularly from the chaotic mana around them. Behind them Haldric roared defiance as he swung his metal bar colliding with a mana blade. Sparks scattered across the floor. Drienne used flashes of light to disrupt pursuit while Mira protected the rear with shielding spells designed to delay rather than injure.
As they reached the corridor enforcers recovered and began chasing them again. Ethan could hear Voren’s furious voice echoing through the hall calling them cowards corrupters and threats to healing. The accusation cut deep but Ethan reminded himself that truth was often attacked by those who felt it exposed their weaknesses. Sera led the way through a narrow passage lined with stone walls etched with healer symbols. Ethan wondered how many healers had walked these halls believing tradition alone would protect lives.
The group reached a staircase leading downward. Ethan nearly slipped but Sera steadied him. The casing felt heavier with each step as though the device sensed urgency. They emerged into a dim storage hall where shelves of unused scrolls and medical herbs were stacked. As they crossed the room, two Guild apprentices spotted them and shouted for reinforcements. Mira quickly formed a mana barrier blocking the doorway while Drienne guided the group toward a maintenance door hidden behind crates.
Sera pushed the door open revealing a descending stairway that led toward the city’s underpass. The mana lights flickered in the cramped space casting uneven shadows on the walls. The air smelled of damp stone and faint metallic tang. Ethan could hear distant footsteps above them. They moved quickly navigating turns and narrow passages. Haldric caught up grumbling about being too old for this kind of trouble but refusing to slow down.
The stairway opened into a large underground channel normally used for transporting supplies beneath the city. A thin stream of water ran along the floor reflecting dim lantern light. Ethan asked if this path led outside the tribunal district. Sera nodded. She explained that merchants used it to avoid crowd traffic. It was their best chance of avoiding enforcers who relied on main roads.
As they moved through the tunnels echoes bounced around them. At several intersections Sera paused listening carefully. She sensed mana signatures above them meaning more enforcers searching the streets. The Guild would likely close the district soon. Ethan’s pulse quickened. They had little time before escape became impossible.
They reached a junction where the tunnel split in three. Drienne pointed to the left path saying it led upward toward the Scholars’ District. Mira suggested the right path which connected to lesser known side streets. Ethan looked to Sera who stood still eyes narrowed. After a moment she pointed toward the middle path. She said she could sense clearer air ahead meaning the path likely led toward an exit.
They followed her choice. The tunnel sloped upward gradually. Sounds of city life faintly reached them. Ethan felt hope rising inside his chest. If they could reach the open streets they could disappear into the crowd and regroup at Haldric’s workshop or Drienne’s laboratory. From there they could plan their next steps, possibly leave Ardin entirely. The Guild’s reach extended far, but so did the world.
Suddenly a strong surge of mana rippled through the air. Ethan staggered as Sera grabbed his arm. Drienne shouted a warning. At the top of the slope three enforcers stood blocking the exit. Their mana blades hummed fiercely. One of them shouted that escape was impossible. Voren’s voice echoed behind them yelling for the device to be seized. Ethan’s heart sank. They had been cornered.
Haldric raised his metal bar ready to charge. But before he moved Ethan stepped forward. He saw something unusual in the enforcers’ stance. Their blades shook slightly as if strained. He realized the tunnel’s narrow structure amplified any mana surge making large spells unstable. Sera noticed too. She whispered that high level magic might collapse the tunnel. The enforcers hesitated for the same reason.
Ethan drew a slow breath. He realized they could use the tunnel’s structure to their advantage. He whispered a plan to Drienne. She nodded and prepared a controlled burst of light, weaker than her previous ones but enough to disorient in the tight space. Sera moved close to Ethan ready to shield him. Haldric and Mira positioned themselves for a quick advance.
On Ethan’s signal Drienne unleashed a blinding flash that bounced violently across the walls. The enforcers cried out staggering backward. Sera created a temporary shield. Haldric lunged forward clearing a path. Ethan sprinted toward the exit clutching the casing. The group burst into the open air emerging behind a row of market tents. Shouts erupted behind them as enforcers stumbled out of the tunnel.
They ran through the busy street dodging startled merchants and carts. Ethan could feel his legs burning but he pushed onward. The city’s noise swallowed them for a moment but enforcers’ voices pierced through the sound. Ethan knew he needed to hide. Sera guided them toward a narrow alley between storage warehouses.
Inside the alley they stopped to catch their breath. The sound of enforcers faded slowly. Ethan leaned against the wall clutching the casing tightly. Sera placed a hand on his shoulder trying to calm his trembling breath. Haldric wiped his forehead muttering that he had not run like that since his youth. Drienne checked Mira who appeared exhausted but unhurt.
Ethan looked at the Arcane Scan System in his hands. Its glow pulsed steadily. He realized something important. The device was no longer simply an invention. It had become a symbol of everything healers hoped for and everything the Guild feared.
They needed to survive. They needed to protect the device. They needed to continue the work.
And Ardin was no longer safe.
