The narrow alley remained quiet for several long moments. Ethan listened carefully for approaching footsteps but all he heard were distant merchant calls and the soft hum of mana lanterns hanging above the street. Sera wiped dust from her healer robes and studied the sky between buildings. She said the Guild would not rest until they found them. Haldric nodded saying they should leave the city before more enforcers swarmed the district.
Drienne suggested they reach the Scholars’ District where some researchers might hide them. Mira said the healer houses near the east gate might offer refuge but she also feared the Guild had already sent orders restricting travel. Ethan considered each option carefully. They needed to leave Ardin quickly and avoid drawing attention. But they also needed safe passage. The Arcane Scan System could not fall into Guild hands. He asked Sera if she knew a path to the city gates that avoided main roads. She nodded slowly and said she knew one though it would be risky.
They moved swiftly through side streets passing by crates of glowing herbs and abandoned supply carts. Ethan noticed that some merchants watched them with recognition but none raised alarm. Perhaps news of the demonstration had already won support among the common people. As they passed a row of rune smith stalls a young apprentice quietly pointed toward a shortcut behind the forges. They followed it gratefully weaving through shadows cast by chimneys and towering metal structures.
The path opened into a quieter district where small workshops lined the street. Many doors were shut but flickers of mana indicated activity inside. Ethan recognized this area as a place where independent craftsmen worked away from the Guild’s restrictions. He felt a strange kinship with them. They too fought against tradition and authority in their own way.
As they moved deeper into the district they heard the faint rhythm of boots striking stone. The sound grew stronger. Ethan felt tension spike. Sera whispered that they needed to hide. Haldric gestured toward a storage shed. They slipped inside closing the door softly behind them. Through a narrow gap Ethan saw a group of enforcers pass by searching each alley with growing frustration. Ethan held his breath until their footsteps faded again.
Drienne placed her hand on the Arcane Scan System casing and whispered that the device seemed to react to the tension in the air. The rings pulsed faintly, responding to the unstable mana outside. Ethan felt a surge of determination. He could not let the device be silenced. The world needed it. He promised himself that once they escaped Ardin he would find a place where research could continue safely. Perhaps another city perhaps a remote village perhaps a new academy founded on truth rather than fear.
When they stepped back onto the street Sera led them toward the eastern quarter near the city walls. The buildings became older and the streets narrower. Lanterns flickered weakly as though struggling to remain lit. Ethan asked Sera why the district felt abandoned. She explained that the Guild rarely visited this part of the city. Many healers here practiced independently without Guild blessing. Some used forgotten techniques. Some mixed magic with herbal science. They were tolerated but never welcomed.
As they passed an old healer house an elderly woman stepped out watching them carefully. She recognized Mira and beckoned them inside. The woman explained she had heard rumors of the tribunal and knew the Guild would hunt Ethan. She offered temporary shelter. Ethan thanked her but declined explaining they needed to escape before the Guild sealed the gates. The woman nodded solemnly and wished them luck placing a protective charm on Ethan’s wrist.
They continued toward the outskirts. Sera guided them down a sloping street that led to a lower gate used mostly by farmers and supply wagons. The road was quiet. Ethan sensed they were close. But as they reached the final turn Sera abruptly stopped. Ethan followed her gaze. Two enforcers stood at the gate questioning travelers. Ethan’s pulse quickened. Drienne whispered that they needed another plan. Haldric muttered that they had come too far to turn back now.
Mira scanned the area and pointed to a small stone building near the gate. She said it was an old guard station no longer in use. Behind it lay a storage yard connected to the outer fields. If they could climb over the station’s rear wall they could reach the open plains beyond Ardin. Ethan agreed. They moved toward the station keeping low and staying in the shadows of the building.
Haldric helped lift Sera and Mira onto the wall. Drienne climbed next using a broken beam for leverage. Ethan passed the casing to Sera who caught it carefully then climbed himself slipping once but recovering with her help. Haldric climbed last grumbling as his boots scraped the stone. Once over the wall they dropped quietly into the storage yard landing among abandoned crates covered in dust.
Ethan listened again. No alarms no shouted orders. The enforcers at the gate had not noticed them. Relief washed through him. Sera pointed toward a narrow path leading between tall grass and farm sheds. Beyond it lay the open field. Once they reached that field they would be outside Ardin’s jurisdiction. The Guild would not be able to arrest them openly.
They walked briskly through the tall grass. The city walls loomed behind them. Ethan felt tension leave his shoulders with each step. When they reached the field’s edge Haldric let out a long sigh of relief. Drienne closed her eyes and whispered gratitude. Mira squeezed Sera’s hand. Ethan looked back at the city. The mana lights glimmered like stars. Ardin had been a place of progress and danger both. It had given him allies and enemies. It had given birth to the Arcane Scan System. But it could no longer contain what he needed to build.
Sera stepped beside him. She said this was not the end. It was the beginning. Ethan nodded. He felt the truth of her words. They had escaped the Guild for now. But the world was vast. There were places where healers sought change. There were cities open to innovation. There were patients waiting for hope.
They would travel. They would protect the Arcane Scan System. They would build a new foundation for magical medicine.
Ethan took a final look at Ardin then turned toward the horizon where the rising sun lit the grass with soft golden light.
A new path awaited.
A new future awaited.
And they would walk it together.
