The road beyond Ardin stretched through vast open fields where mana drifted like morning mist across tall grass that shimmered faintly under sunlight. Ethan walked at the center of the group carrying the protected Arcane Scan System against his chest. Sera stayed close to him watching the horizon for any sign of pursuit while Haldric grumbled about the uneven path though he never slowed his pace. Drienne kept detailed notes as they traveled and Mira walked with quiet purpose her healer robes brushing softly against tangled grass.
Leaving Ardin felt unreal to Ethan. The city had been both a cradle for his invention and a cage built by Guild authority. Now the world opened before him a landscape shaped not by marble walls but by wilderness and possibility. Still he could not shake the feeling of tension that lingered behind every breath. The Guild had lost control of the tribunal but had not lost their power. They would pursue him beyond the city.
Sera broke the silence first. She explained that a small village named Lumerin lay several hours ahead a place where healers practiced without Guild supervision. They welcomed travelers and injured wanderers who could not afford Guild treatment. Many in Lumerin believed healing should be accessible not restricted by rank or emblem. Ethan listened as she described the village’s traditions and realized such a place might offer refuge where the scan system could be tested and understood safely.
The group moved steadily across the plains. Ethan studied the environment observing glowing insects hovering in tight spirals above patches of mana rich soil. Strange plants pulsed gently as though breathing with unseen currents. He imagined how mana interacted with biology in the world beyond cities away from structured healing houses. He wondered how raw environments could influence disease how cursed zones might distort natural mana flow and how the scan system could map such variations.
As they reached a gentle hill the ground trembled slightly. Haldric raised his hand signaling them to stop. Ahead a herd of mana grazers moved across the slope large deerlike creatures whose antlers glowed with pale blue light. Their movement caused faint pulses in the air. Sera whispered that mana grazers could sense magical disturbances long before humans could. If they appeared calm the group was safe for now.
They continued until midday when Sera called for a brief rest near a scattered grove of trees. Ethan set the casing down carefully and sat beneath a tree. The wind carried a cool breeze across the field and the soft sound of rustling grass calmed his breath. Drienne joined him and unfolded her notes. She asked Ethan if he had observed how mana behaved differently outside the city where structured pathways were not reinforced by runes. Ethan said the patterns seemed more fluid and natural much like chaotic biological signals before they were processed. Drienne nodded and suggested the scan system might need adjustments to interpret wild mana patterns.
Ethan felt excitement stir within him. Each new environment offered data. Each new challenge expanded the system’s potential. But as he and Drienne discussed possibilities Sera’s expression shifted subtly. She sensed something in the distance. She approached Ethan and said she could feel faint but distinct mana signatures behind them. Ethan stiffened. Pursuit. The Guild was not far.
They resumed their journey quickly this time staying low against the slope of the land. Mira suggested taking a narrower path through a shallow ravine where their movement would be harder to track. Haldric agreed and led the way gripping his metal tool tightly. They entered the ravine where the walls rose on either side casting shade over the moss covered stones. Mana drifted in slow eddies offering a strange calm that contrasted with their urgency.
Halfway through the ravine Sera stopped again listening carefully. She turned to Ethan with wide eyes. She said the signatures were closer than she thought. Ethan’s pulse quickened. Before he could speak a sharp crack of mana sounded above them. A stone on the ravine wall split violently sending debris cascading down. Ethan shielded the casing with his body as fragments rained around them. Shouts echoed from the ridge above. Guild enforcers had found them.
Drienne immediately cast a blinding flare upward. Sera grabbed Ethan’s arm pulling him behind an outcrop. Haldric swung his bar at falling debris clearing a path. Mira began shaping a protective barrier though her mana shook from fear. Ethan peered upward and spotted several enforcers descending the ridge using grappling hooks etched with runes that glowed unnervingly bright.
Sera whispered urgently that they could not remain trapped in the ravine. They needed higher ground. Ethan nodded and motioned toward a narrow ledge to the right. They moved as quickly as the terrain allowed climbing upward while enforcers dropped spells to force them lower. One mana burst struck the ledge near Ethan but he shielded the device with his body taking a glancing impact to his shoulder. Pain traveled down his arm but he kept moving. The scan system was intact. That was all that mattered.
When they reached the top of the ravine the group broke into a sprint. The land opened into rolling hills dotted with old ruins. Sera guided them toward a cluster of collapsed stone pillars. Once they reached the ruins she led them into the shadow of a fallen archway. The stone offered cover and blocked the line of sight.
The enforcers emerged at the ravine edge searching frantically. They scanned the land but mana distortion from the ruins made tracking difficult. After several tense minutes the enforcers turned toward another direction following false traces carried by drifting mana.
When the danger passed Ethan leaned against the stone panting. Sera placed her hand gently over his shoulder injury. Drienne checked the casing ensuring the device was unharmed. Mira whispered a quiet prayer of thanks. Haldric dropped to sit with a heavy sigh.
They had survived.
But the Guild was relentless.
Ethan looked toward the horizon where the faint outline of distant mountains shimmered. He realized that leaving Ardin was not the end. It was the beginning of a long journey to reshape healing itself.
He lifted the casing again feeling the steady pulse of the device. The Arcane Scan System had become more than a tool. It was a reason to keep moving.
They continued their path to Lumerin.
