The morning light spread across Lumerin like soft paint melting into the hills. Birds with faint mana glow circled the rooftops while villagers prepared for another day of quiet work. Ethan stepped outside the healer house holding a cup of warm herbal tea given to him by Talen. The air felt calmer than anything he had experienced in Ardin. No marble walls. No enforcers. No tension pressing into his chest. And yet he knew this peace was fragile. Innovation had a way of stirring storms no matter how gentle its origin.
Sera emerged from the doorway adjusting her healer gloves. She smiled at Ethan and told him several villagers had already gathered for morning checkups. Ethan nodded and prepared the Arcane Scan System. He set it on a wooden table beneath a shade canopy Talen had arranged. The rings pulsed faintly absorbing the ambient mana of Lumerin.
The first patient was an elderly farmer who experienced numbness in his fingers. The scan revealed a slow constriction of mana channels near his wrist. Sera treated it easily. The farmer laughed with gratitude. ETHan documented the reading for later reference. More villagers followed. A fisherwoman with chronic shoulder tension. A young boy who bruised easily because of unstable mana flow. A woman who suffered fainting spells due to irregular channel resonance. Each case showed the system’s potential, each treatment strengthened Ethan’s resolve.
But as the morning passed, Ethan sensed subtle unease among a few people observing from a distance. Not everyone was quick to embrace change. Some whispered about foreign devices interfering with life force. Some feared the Guild’s wrath. Sera reassured them patiently, explaining the mechanism and purpose of every scan, but fear crept easily even in peaceful places.
Near midday, a man in worn healer robes approached them with hesitant steps. His face carried deep wrinkles but his eyes were sharp and steady. Talen introduced him as Healer Corin, one of the oldest healers in Lumerin. Corin studied the Arcane Scan System with quiet intensity. He did not show admiration nor fear. Instead, he asked Ethan a question no one had asked before.
He asked what price innovation demanded.
Ethan paused. Corin explained that every advancement brought change and every change brought loss. Healers who relied on intuition might feel useless. Those with weak mana talent might overpower those with strong gifts through the use of tools. And the Guild, threatened by an invention that made healers equal, would grow more desperate.
Ethan answered carefully. He said innovation served truth. Corin nodded slowly, but asked whether truth alone was strong enough to reshape the world. He said he feared for Ethan not because of the device but because the Guild would not relent until they regained control.
Sera stepped in firmly. She said healers deserved better than fear. Corin agreed softly, but he added that fear had shaped healer culture for centuries. Breaking it would take more than one device.
Talen then approached and placed a gentle hand on Corin’s shoulder. He said fear should not dictate the future. He said Corin had seen more suffering than anyone here and should recognize hope when it appeared.
Corin sighed and finally asked for a demonstration.
He sat before the device revealing a slight tremor in his right hand. Ethan activated the scan. The rings glowed with soft blue light revealing a tangled mana thread near Corin’s wrist. Drienne studied the pattern and suggested the tremor stemmed from old curse residue. Sera treated it with delicate precision. When the session finished Corin moved his hand with renewed steadiness.
A long silence followed.
Corin looked at Ethan with a softened expression. He said the future was frightening but necessary. He said he would support the device.
The villagers who had hesitated earlier watched Corin’s transformation. Hope began to outweigh fear.
But just as calm spread through the village, a distant tremor of mana rippled through the air. Sera’s eyes widened instantly. She said she felt Guild signatures. Ethan’s body tensed. He knew this peace was not meant to last.
Before anyone could speak, a Lumerin scout sprinted into the square shouting that Guild messengers had arrived at the western road carrying a formal decree.
Talen gathered everyone with urgency. The decree demanded Lumerin surrender Ethan and the Arcane Scan System or face Guild sanctions including mana-blockade, healer expulsion, and resource restrictions. The Guild would return by morning for an answer.
Fear moved through the crowd like a cold wind.
Corin whispered, almost to himself, that fear had returned much faster than he expected.
Ethan felt guilt rise like a weight in his chest. He never intended to bring danger here. Sera seized his hand fiercely. She said no village deserved punishment for wanting better healing. Talen agreed. The people murmured nervously but many voices rose insisting they would not surrender Ethan.
Ethan stood before the villagers and bowed deeply. He said he would leave at once to protect them. But Talen shook his head saying innovation belonged to the world, not to a single place. If Ethan left alone the Guild would still punish Lumerin for helping him. If he stayed, at least they stood together.
Corin stepped forward raising his healer staff. He said the Guild had forgotten compassion. He said he would not bow to fear any longer.
Hope flickered again across the villagers’ faces.
Sera looked at Ethan with determination stronger than ever. She whispered that tomorrow they would not run.
They would stand.
