The town was buzzing.

After months of small town talk and city council gossip, the town finally had a new mayor, Mr. Greene. His arrival had the local paper printing bold headlines and the townspeople whispering about wealth, influence, and how Ravenswood was finally “stepping into the future.”

But for the students at Ravenswood College, the real news wasn’t the mayor.

It was his son.

Dylan Greene.

He showed up one morning in a sleek black car, stepping out like he was walking into his own movie. Tall, confident, with a smile that made people look twice and eyes that made them look away.

By lunch, everyone already knew his name.

Ryan, of course, was the first to befriend him. The rich always found each other.

They were seen together in the cafeteria, laughing like they’d been friends forever, their easy arrogance filling the room.

And soon, Amara was with them too.

Elena noticed it from across the courtyard one afternoon.

Amara sitting at Ryan’s table. Dylan leaning just close enough that their shoulders brushed.

Something about it made her stomach twist.

When Elena asked her about it later, Amara waved it off.

“Oh, that? Ryan just introduced me. Dylan’s fine.”

“Fine?” Elena repeated. “He looked like he was undressing you with his eyes.”

Amara laughed, a little too lightly. “You’re being dramatic.”

But later that night, as Amara stood in front of her dorm mirror, she thought about the way Dylan looked at her his eyes lingering, sharp, like a hunter sizing up his next move.

It didn’t feel like admiration.

It felt like warning.

Ryan and Dylan became inseparable over the next few weeks. Where one went, the other followed. Parties, late night drives, the big house at the edge of town.

And Amara was always invited.

At first, she went just to feel included. The music, the laughter, the feeling of being seen, it was easy to lose herself in it.

But every time Dylan spoke to her, something in her body tensed.

His smile was smooth, but his words felt too heavy.

Like he enjoyed watching her squirm.

“Elena, you’re worrying again,” Amara said when they talked after class. “Dylan’s just… bold. That’s all.”

“Bold?” Elena frowned. “There’s a difference between bold and dangerous.”

Amara looked away. “You don’t even know him.”

Elena sighed. “I don’t have to. I just know how people like him act when they think no one’s watching.”

Amara didn’t answer. She only smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

Later that night, Amara got a text.

RYAN: party at the lake house. u coming?

She stared at the screen for a long time.

Then typed back:

AMARA: yeah. sure.

She tossed her phone aside and lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

For a moment, she thought she saw Dylan’s smile in the dark.

And she couldn’t tell if it was her imagination, or a warning she refused to hear.
