Dawn came slowly, as if the sky itself hesitated to reveal what waited above the clouds. The air carried an unusual warmth mixed with cold, a contradiction that made Evan uneasy. Highpass Refuge stirred long before sunrise. Villagers moved silently across terraces, packing supplies, reinforcing shelters, preparing as though a great storm approached. News of the falling sky dust had spread through every home. People whispered about omens, old legends, stories of mountains waking and swallowing entire valleys.
Evan tightened his harness on the upper terrace while his team gathered around him. The creature they rescued rested nearby, still wrapped in blankets. Its glow had dimmed but its breathing was steadier. It watched them with tired, knowing eyes.
Serana approached carrying a wooden box sealed with carved symbols.
This is from our oldest shrine she said Inside are relics found in the high peaks long ago Our ancestors said they belonged to the mountain ones
Evan opened the box. Inside lay thin plates of stone etched with symbols identical to the glowing lines in the sky. When he lifted one plate it vibrated faintly in his hand, humming like the mountains veins.
He whispered.
This is the same pattern we saw in the fissure It’s part of the system
Serana nodded.
Our elders believed the mountains communicate through stone That these plates hold echoes of their voice
Evan slid the relic into his pack.
Then we carry them They may help us understand what waits at the summit
Mira checked her rope with steady hands.
If the mountain is calling we need to hear it clearly
Bran adjusted his anchor hammer.
And be ready if it tries to crush us
Tallo grinned slightly.
Or throw us off a cliff
Elya breathed slowly, tracing her finger along her staff.
The creature said nothing since last night But its eyes still point toward the same peak
Hesh shivered.
Then that peak is our fate
The creature raised one trembling hand toward the sky. The faint glow pulsing beneath its skin flashed in the same rhythm as the mountain veins. Evan knelt beside it.
We will go he said And we will return with answers
The creature’s eyes softened.
Before they left Serana stood before the team, blade in hand, and tapped each climber’s shoulder.
May the mountain see your courage May your steps echo true
Evan turned to the team.
Stay rope-close Never move without signaling We climb as one
They began the ascent.
The first ridge was silent, the stone still warm from the night’s strange energies. The sky above glowed faintly, swirling with pale light. Evan studied the cracks along the ridge.
The pulse patterns are changing he said The rhythm is faster today
Mira nodded.
The mountain breathes like something waking from centuries of sleep
As they climbed higher the glowing veins brightened. The warmth intensified. Evan felt it through his gloves like soft heat radiating from inside the stone.
We are getting close he murmured
They reached a wide platform overlooking a sweeping valley filled with drifting clouds. Beyond the clouds the great summit rose sharp and immense, wrapped in swirling light like a crown.
Hesh stepped forward, speechless.
It’s beautiful He whispered And terrifying
Evan’s eyes narrowed.
Those are not normal clouds That’s energy rising from the core
Bran adjusted his grip on the rope.
Then the climb will get harder
Evan nodded.
Much harder
But they climbed.
Handhold after handhold
Step after step
Anchor after anchor
Until they reached the final ridge before the great summit.
And the mountain waited.
