The stone gate split with a deafening crack, sending shards flying across the plateau. A wave of cold darker than winter surged outward. The temperature plummeted instantly. Frost covered every surface in a thin crystalline layer. Eldric’s breath froze mid-exhale. The wind died completely leaving a hollow silence.
From the deep corridor inside the mountain
a shadow drifted forward.
It was not a creature in the usual sense. It was a writhing mass of black frost swirling in spirals like smoke trapped in ice. Its presence distorted the air around it bending light into faint ripples.
Torren stumbled back. That is not alive Not dead either What is it
Eldric’s voice was cold. A Nithrael fragment One of the pieces that broke off the ancient horror It seeks heat mana memory energy anything it can devour
The fragment emitted a low hum that vibrated through their bones. The sound was not a voice but an instinctive hunger echoing through their minds.
Lyra felt her fingers numb. Eldric This thing will kill us if it gets within ten steps
Garron raised his shield with both hands. Well if it wants a fight let it try
Eldric grabbed his arm. No You cannot attack it Physical force will not affect it And magic might feed it
Torren’s eyes widened. That is how it killed the nobles It fed on their spells and their life heat
The fragment drifted closer unraveling long tendrils of icy mist that snaked across the stone. Wherever they touched frost bloomed like spreading white fire.
Lyra whispered. We need distance Now
Eldric held up the relic. The disc glowed faintly but weakly still recovering from the earlier backlash. The fragment reacted to it immediately freezing in place as if sensing a threat or a lure.
Torren gasped. It recognizes the relic The beacons must be toxic to it
Eldric took a cautious step forward. The relic is part of the ancient chain The Nithrael cannot fully approach it It fears the seals
Garron moved beside him. If this thing fears the relic then we push it back into the chamber and reseal the gate
Lyra shook her head. We cannot fight it with force but we can trap it
Eldric nodded. Torren Prepare a containment circle Something that echoes the beacon’s pattern
Torren hesitated. I can try but the mana here is unstable The fragment is warping everything
We do not have a choice Eldric said calmly.
Torren knelt on the frost-covered stone and began carving a quick but powerful pattern using a glowstone stylus. Lyra and Garron moved in defensive arcs keeping the fragment occupied without directly confronting it. Eldric stepped forward holding the relic like a lantern of ancient light.
The fragment recoiled from him. Its swirling mass shuddered rippling with jagged cold.
Torren shouted. Almost ready Keep it away from me
Lyra threw a shard of broken stone as a distraction. The fragment devoured it effortlessly leaving only frozen dust. Garron slammed his shield against the ground creating noise to pull the mass away from Torren.
Eldric felt the relic grow hot against his palm. It glowed brighter responding to the fragment’s proximity. He held it forward more boldly.
The fragment quivered in fear or rage and emitted a piercing frost-scream.
Torren yelled. NOW Eldric Bring it into the circle
Eldric stepped onto the carved sigils. The relic pulsed like a heartbeat and the circle ignited. Silver lines shot outward forming an arcane cage of light. The fragment lunged forward in desperation but the instant it touched the edge of the circle its tendrils recoiled violently.
Torren shouted again. Push it Eldric ONE MORE STEP
Eldric thrust the relic deeper into the circle’s center.
The fragment shrieked and collapsed inward as if dragged by an unseen force. The swirling frost hardened into crystalline chains. The entire circle glowed white.
Lyra shielded her eyes. It is working
Garron stepped backward. Seal the damn thing before it learns something new
Torren slammed his hands onto the sigil anchors. Reinforce Seal Echo Reflect
The circle contracted
the relic glowed
and the fragment screamed
as it was pulled violently back into the chamber.
The stone gate shuddered
the frost cracked
and a final pulse shot through the mountain
before silence fell.
The seal held
for now.
Eldric sank to one knee breathing hard. The relic dimmed in his hands but no longer trembled with panic.
Lyra knelt beside him. Eldric Are you hurt
Eldric shook his head. No But the fragment’s presence It was growing stronger far too quickly The network is destabilizing faster than the ancients predicted
Torren wiped frost from his brow. If this was only a fragment I do not want to imagine what the full Nithrael is like
Garron sheathed his sword. So what now We have restored two seals How many more remain
Eldric stood slowly gripping the relic. His voice carried new weight.
Two more
one to the south
one far across the sea
but the next crack will appear closer
and sooner
than any of us want
Lyra looked toward the dark valley below. And every faction in the Dominion is hunting us
Eldric nodded. Then we must move before they reach the next seal
He looked back at the mountain one last time.
The ancient network shook
and somewhere far away
a fourth seal began to stir.
