Evan returned to the inn late in the afternoon his arms full of crystals rune plates and half finished relay pieces he bought from the crafting quarter. The innkeeper stared at him like he had gone mad. He ignored her confusion and rushed upstairs to spread everything across the small wooden table in his room.
He took a deep breath letting the silence settle. Outside the window the town dimmed into evening and lanterns floated upward on wind glyphs illuminating the streets with gentle gold light. Inside his room everything looked chaotic but full of potential. Crystals in different shapes lay scattered like puzzle pieces and rune plates glimmered in the faint light with promising energy.
He opened his sketchbook again drawing a rough outline of how Magenet could work. Not just the crystal relays but the entire structure.
One layer for illusion capture
One layer for pulse transmission
One layer for audience reception
One layer for reaction runes
The Insight Vision lit up as he wrote glowing faintly over the page. Each time he drew a new part of the system it responded projecting small predictions or warnings. It reminded him of brainstorming with intelligent dashboards only this one had a personality and guided him with real time feedback.
He picked up the first crystal sphere.
This would be the entry point
Creators would use it to record their illusion frames
Short clips long demos live streams
The world already loved illusions so this felt natural
He tried a small experiment holding the sphere and breathing slowly to focus. The Insight Vision overlaid a rune pattern he had never seen before guiding his fingers. He traced the pattern along the sphere surface and the crystal vibrated as if waking. A faint swirling image appeared inside like a tiny storm of light.
He spoke quietly Record illusion
A beam flashed and the illusion captured the movement of his hand. It was blurry and unstable but it was a start. He placed the sphere on the table letting it rest.
Next he picked up the tiny mana relay crystals. These had to link in a chain and transmit illusion pulses so the content could hop from one relay to another. If he set these up correctly a broadcast could reach an entire market or maybe the entire town.
He arranged five crystals in a straight line on the floor. They reflected the candlelight like drops of frozen stars. He crouched and carved a thin rune into the wood beneath each crystal using the charcoal stick. His lines were messy but the Insight Vision hummed each time he corrected an angle or stroke.
He whispered Activate link
The crystals trembled then flickered one after another like a sequence of blinking lights. The illusion from the sphere shot through them distorting then stabilizing until five identical copies hovered above each crystal.
He grinned despite the sweat on his forehead. This was the first real piece of Magenet working before his eyes.
Suddenly footsteps thundered up the stairs. The door burst open and the innkeeper stared wide eyed at the floating illusions.
What in the goddess name are you doing in here
Evan smiled trying to look harmless Just a little magic experiment
That does not look little she said squinting at the illusions
Before she could panic a soft chime sounded. A pair of young mages from the hallway stepped in curious about the light.
Is that an echo projection
No it looks like a multi channel relay
Who did this
Evan stood slowly This is a test for a communication system something that could let people share illusions across long distances
The young mages exchanged stunned looks
One asked Why would anyone want to share illusions that far
To teach to show to inspire to connect Evan replied People want to be seen
The innkeeper crossed her arms You talk like a merchant mixed with a scholar
He laughed softly Something like that
The mages moved closer mesmerized by the looping illusion frames. Their eyes sparkled with the potential of something greater.
If you can make this stable the guilds will want it one said
If you can make it accessible everyone will want it the other added
The innkeeper gave a tired sigh Fine fine do not burn the inn down But if this is some kind of trouble I want no part of it
As she left the mages remained eagerly asking questions. Evan answered them carefully realizing something important. He would need early adopters people who understood magic well enough to test and break things. The mages agreed to return the next morning to help him tune the relays.
After they left he collapsed into the chair breathing deeply. The crystals still glowed softly on the floor.
He looked at them with fierce determination
This will work
I am building Magenet
I am giving this world a voice
He did not sleep until dawn and even then he dreamed of glowing runes flowing through networks like living rivers of light.
