The Council chamber sat at the highest point of Emberhold built into a wide tower shaped like a staff rising toward the clouds. The stone walls shimmered from layers of protective enchantment. Evan approached the entrance with steady breaths though his stomach twisted. The two young mages followed behind while the craftsman walked beside him like a silent guardian.
At the tower gate two armored knights stopped them.
State your purpose
Evan Cross appearing under order of Archon Veylan
The knights stepped aside and allowed them through. The long hallway echoed with soft glowing runes drifting across the walls like living ink. Evan felt them probing him sensing his aura analyzing whether he was a threat. His body tensed but Insight Vision remained steady a silent companion.
At the far end giant doors opened revealing a circular chamber illuminated by seven floating glyphs. Each glyph represented a member of the Council of Seven Runes the highest authority in magical regulation. Six robed figures sat at their seats while the seventh seat remained empty waiting for the archon who had summoned him.
When Archon Veylan entered the chamber silence fell like a blade. His staff glowed cold blue and his gaze fixed on Evan.
Begin he commanded
Evan stepped into the center of the chamber carrying the relay crystal box. The mages and craftsman stayed near the wall watching with anxious eyes.
The first Councilor spoke A foreigner performs unsanctioned arcane communication in the plaza Explain yourself
The second added Why create a system that spreads illusions beyond their source Why break a core rule of rune law
Evan inhaled slowly This world contains incredible magic but its communication is limited to whoever is physically present. Illusions are powerful yet wasted. People have creativity skill courage They deserve to share it
A murmur rippled through the chamber.
The third Councilor asked Share For what purpose
To learn from one another to elevate talent and to create opportunities for all
The fourth Councilor scoffed Ambitious words
Evan continued unwavering I built crystals that relay illusions in controlled pulses. Not broadcasts Not uncontrolled magic Purely structured communication
He opened the case revealing the stabilized relay crystals. Soft light spread across the chamber.
Several Councilors leaned forward examining the runes.
These carvings are precise
The relay grooves are stable
This technique is old
Archon Veylan frowned And yet unpredictable pulses were reported in the plaza
Evan nodded That was a flaw in the earlier prototype Not these These new relays are stable
He placed one crystal on the floor and spoke Illusion capture sphere
One mage stepped forward holding the recording sphere. He bowed nervously to the Council then activated a small spell creating an illusion of a gentle swirling leaf of light. Evan captured it and transferred the illusion to the relay crystal. The sphere’s image flickered then rose into a slow looping projection.
The Council watched in silence
No crack
No overload
No wild pulse
Evan let the demonstration settle then added The relay can also sync with others of its kind allowing illusions to travel through a chain safely
The fifth Councilor asked How far
For now short distances Evan replied But with more development we can extend the network
At that word network the chamber tensed
The sixth Councilor leaned forward sharply Network You aim to create a kingdom wide spread of illusionary information
Evan met her gaze steadily Yes one day
Archon Veylan slammed his staff once The kingdom cannot handle uncontrolled illusions They start wars They spread lies They inflame the ignorant
Evan responded with a calm he barely felt
Any system can be misused It is not the system that decides its morality but how it is shaped and guided
Several Councilors exchanged glances
One whispered He speaks like a scholar rather than a mage
Evan walked slowly in a circle around the relay crystal
I want to create a platform for creators adventurers potion crafters scholars A space where knowledge and stories can travel safely With rules transparency and guidance Nothing hidden nothing dangerous
He turned to face the Council directly
Magic alone is not the danger Ignorance is
Silence filled the chamber
A deep thick silence full of shifting thoughts
Finally the first Councilor spoke The Arcanum cannot approve free roaming magic But your relay system does not roam It links only to similar runes
The second added It is controllable
Archon Veylan frowned clearly displeased but he did not interrupt
The third Councilor asked What do you call this system
Evan took a breath Magenet
The word echoed through the chamber carried by a soft pulse from the relay crystal as if the network itself acknowledged its name.
The sixth Councilor tapped her staff
I propose conditional approval of further development Only under oversight
The fifth added He must report weekly
The fourth nodded No public demonstrations unless supervised
Archon Veylan finally spoke
I oppose this The system threatens stability
But the Council had already shifted
Four votes rose in glowing runes around the chamber
Four was enough
The ruling was final
Archon Veylan glared at Evan
You are permitted to continue
But step out of line once
And the Arcanum will crush your creation
Evan bowed
Thank you
As he exited the chamber the mages cheered quietly and the craftsman clapped once on his back.
You did it he said
Barely Evan breathed I barely did it
But inside he felt something powerful
Not victory
But ignition
Magenet now had legal footing
Small limited conditional
But real
And that was all a revolution needed
The moment he stepped out into the sunlight he felt it
The world had shifted
A door had opened
And the future was waiting on the other side
