The new corridor was only half drawn when the first warning pulse reached Alden Mira saw it at the same instant The map table glowed red along the western side of the provisional route A pressure pocket had formed unexpectedly pushing two small spirals into the weak corridor path
Mira pointed immediately That was not in our earlier readings Something shifted too fast
Alden leaned over the map Are the spirals moving toward the route
Slowly but steadily Mira said If they hit the team they could push the skiff into a downdraft pocket
Alden felt his pulse quicken Tarin and the scouts were still planting the third marker They had no time to adjust He tapped the communication crystal The surface flashed connecting to the skiffs receiver
Tarin can you hear me
A moment of static passed before Tarins voice emerged clear despite the distance We hear you What is happening Your tone tells me the sky is not behaving
Alden spoke quickly Two pressure spirals forming on your west They may reach you within minutes Do not drift too far from the mapped line
Tarin did not sound afraid Understood We just planted the third anchor Give us the position of the spirals relative to the next marker
Mira adjusted the overlay and called the numbers They waited for Tarins confirmation before the skiff shifted direction The engine hum deepened as the pilot adjusted the angle allowing the vessel to slide between the weakened currents
The screens showed the skiff drifting dangerously close to the spirals The projected airflow around the vessel flickered in unpredictable distortions The weak currents were bending like ribbons around sharp corners It was a miracle the vessel had not already tipped sideways
Alden gripped the map table so tightly he felt the edges of the crystal press into his palms The hollowness in his stomach deepened as the skiff moved through the narrow path
Dax stepped close behind him If the pocket collapses they will fall straight into the downdraft They will have to counter shape manually
Alden knew Tarin could manage manual shaping but the team would be exposed Doing so in shifting currents required intense concentration One mistake could pull them too far off the intended path
The crystal vibrated again Tarin’s voice carried a new edge of strain Spiral pressure is stronger than expected We may need to swing wide Can we anchor the fourth marker from the outer curve
Mira answered You can but only if you move now The pocket might merge with the upper band If you take too long you will lose the route entirely
Alden added Make the curve tight Do not cut too wide The downdraft is still unstable on the far edge
A rumbling sound came through the crystal The skiff engines were pushing hard against the wind The pressure readings flickered as the vessel dipped then rose sharply
Alden could picture the scene clearly The horizon tilting The lamp crystals flickering on the deck Tarins staff glowing with steady light The scouts shouting numbers back and forth The sky bending under them while they forced a path through it
The projection lit up The fourth marker flashed into place Mira exhaled a breath of relief They made it They planted it
But before Alden could respond a second alarm pulsed across the table This time the reading came from the east The corridor was not only unstable It was attracting wild mana currents from the surrounding airspace As if the sky sensed a new path forming and was testing its strength
Alden whispered The sky is reacting
Mira nodded The currents are trying to reshape around the anchors They want balance and the new path is pushing imbalance
Tarin must have seen something similar because his voice came through again We see new movement along the ridge The wind tunnels are stirring We have time for one more anchor maybe two before the tunnels collapse onto the route
Alden swallowed The corridor needed five anchors to become stable Four were already in place If they did not plant the fifth the whole path might fail by morning and Tarins team would be forced to retreat through collapsing tunnels
He spoke planting his voice with the authority Skygrains administration required Tarin place the fifth anchor then return immediately Do not attempt to reinforce the route after that The shaping team will finish it at daylight
Tarin responded without hesitation Understood We move now
The projection shifted as the skiff surged forward into the thinning corridor The currents bent with sharp curves like invisible snakes twisting in the dark The readings spiked several times Mira adjusted the shaping patterns each time preventing the skiff from drifting into danger
Alden stood immobile watching The fifth marker appeared on the projection It glowed faintly at first then brightened as the anchor settled into place
Mira let out another breath That is enough The corridor is outlined
Dax asked Can they turn back safely
Before Alden could answer the skiffs projection shifted violently The route image flickered The air pressure around the vessel surged upward as if the sky itself was breathing too fast
Tarins voice cut through the static We are caught in a rising crosswind Heading off route Hold the guidance We will try to break through
Alden stepped closer to the table Mira work the shaping crystal Give them a stable draw angle on the downward drift
Mira pressed both hands to her panel The map table pulsed The corridor line brightened The skiff tilted on the projection but slowly eased into alignment
Tarin shouted Hold on Hold the line
The skiff descended along a tight spiral drifting dangerously near a downdraft pit The engines strained as the vessel fought gravity and swirling pressure pockets The projection shook once more then steadied
Finally Tarin spoke clearly again We are through We will return to the north deck ETA fifteen minutes
Alden exhaled the breath he had been holding The hall fell quiet except for the hum of the map table The corridor outline remained thin but stable The five anchors glowed like fragile lights against the sky map
Mira leaned against the desk exhausted The worst part is over for tonight The shaping team can stabilize the path at sunrise
Alden closed his eyes briefly Relief mixed with tension The corridor existed but only barely It was enough to shift trade flow at dawn It was enough to show the city that Skygrain did not wait for others to decide its fate
He looked out the tall windows at the star speckled sky The air shimmered faintly as the skiff returned Approaching fast
Skygrain had made its move Cloudport would feel it soon And the sky itself now held the first trace of a new shape a new path born from risk desperation and determination
Alden whispered to himself The sky belongs to those who shape it
