“Welcome Grady. Sorry about that call running a bit lo—”
“Not a problem sir.”
“OK well what do you have to show me today?”
“Well Mr. President, I was planning on giving you a full report, but something in my view something more pressing came up which was discovered by one of the junior staffers.”
“Let’s have it Grady.”
“Sir let me show you an analysis that was run across two different versions of the AI software. Here is the analysis that came from version 5.5” Grady said as he set the laptop on the desk in front of the president and pointed to the screen.
Grady scrolled through a few slides showing the full analysis.
“OK, looks like normal stuff to me.”
“Yes sir, it is but now look at the output from version 5.6.”
“Hmm, looks completely different. Are these the same scenarios.”
“Yes sir.”
“Alright. I can see there could be a problem here—”
“The problem, sir, if I may, is that 5.6 is hallucinating. Which we were told would not happen. But perhaps mor—”
“They solved the hallucination problem some time ago didn’t they?” Malcolm asked.
“Yes sir, they did, but it is back in this new version.”
“What company is this?”
“I am not sure sure, but if—”
“Can you get me the name?”
“I will send that over right after but if I could continue, please.”
Malcolm sighed at this. He liked to keep his meetings with Grady short. He really didn’t enjoy Grady’s constant complaints and lectures about executive power.
“Yes Grady, go ahead, but make it quick.”
“Thank you, sir. The problem here is deeper than hallucinations, not only did the model hallucinate, but it also completely made-up fake data, and built an entire government website to back up its fake claims.”
“Well now that is something now isn’t it. It was able to do that?”
“Yes sir, and quite convincingly.”
“That is fascinating. Now I would really like you to pass on the name of that company Grady. If their tech is developing these kinds of capabilities, that could be a real game changer.”
“I agree Mr. President, it is quite disturb—”
“Oh, come off it Grady, this is not disturbing, it could be an amazing tool. You know the election is coming up, and we don’t want those commie democrats winning. This tool could completely change the game! Imagine with me for a moment, we deploy a tool like this on social media that is designed to be supportive of our campaign. It would be damn near impossible to fact check if it is making up fake websites to back up its claims.”
“But sir.”
“No but’s Grady. Get me the name of that tool!”
Now it was Grady’s turn to sigh.
“Yes sir. And one more thing. I have this for you.” Grady reached out to hand over the resignation letter.
“What is this Grady?” Malcolm asked as he reached across the table to grab it.
Just as the paper was about to change hands, a secret service agent rushed in out of breath.
“Mr. President, staff, we have to go NOW.”
“Go where?” Malcolm asked.
“Follow me, and quickly.”
