Beast Ledger The Ecological Inspector of the Magical Beast Trade

The first sound echoed like distant thunder. Wooden wheels grinding against stone. Then the rhythmic thud of heavy hoofbeats. The ridge trembled under the weight of a large transport caravan. Erian felt tension sweep through the cavern. The others felt it too. Vorrek was arriving sooner than expected.

Jana extinguished the lanterns. Darkness swallowed the cavern except for faint mana glows from stressed beasts. Selin moved silently to reassure them. Rolan stood at the tunnel entrance gripping his staff spear. Daris prepared rune slips, ready to seal or break bindings as needed.

The rumbling grew louder. Then torches appeared outside the tunnel. Three, then five, then eight. Vorrek did not travel alone. His escorts marched with practiced rhythm. Their shadows stretched across the walls. Erian inhaled and steadied himself.

Vorrek entered with a presence that filled the space. He was tall, muscular, adorned in layered leather reinforced with black runes. His face bore sharp angles and cold eyes that scanned the cavern instantly. His hair was tied back in a rough knot. His coat carried symbols of his underground authority. But what stood out most were the chains coiled at his side. Each link bore enchantments. He wielded them like extensions of his own will.

He stopped near the center of the cavern and studied the scene. Several cages were open. Handlers lay unconscious. Equipment scattered. His face did not show shock. Only slow rising fury.

His gaze settled on Erian.

“So the inspector arrives,” Vorrek said. His voice carried gravel and authority. “You move quickly. But not quickly enough.”

Erian stepped forward with controlled posture. He held his insignia steady. “You are operating an illegal hub. Release the beasts and stand down.”

Vorrek laughed. The sound echoed through the cavern. “You think your seal matters here. This Hollow belongs to me. These beasts belong to me. And by tomorrow their blood will earn more gold than your entire office earns in a year.”

Erian did not flinch. “Their value is not in your chains. Their value is in the ecosystems you are destroying.”

Vorrek’s smile faded. “You speak of ecosystems. I speak of reality. Demand shapes markets. People want power. Power comes from beasts. I simply give them what they want, without the useless regulations that slow everything down.”

Erian held his stance. “The kingdom’s stability depends on balance, not greed.”

Vorrek stepped closer. The chains at his side clinked softly. “Balance is a lie. Power is balance. Those who control supply control everything.”

At Vorrek’s gesture several escorts stepped forward. They wielded short blades and enchanted gloves. Jana moved quickly to block one. Rolan intercepted another. Daris activated rune slips to shield Selin. A clash erupted at the cavern entrance.

Vorrek did not move yet. He watched the fight as if evaluating. Erian sensed his strategy. Vorrek wanted to see the strength of the team before acting.

Jana fought with fluid precision. She engaged an escort with swift strikes. Rolan held the line with powerful counter force. Selin kept the beasts protected and calm. Daris disrupted enemy enchantments.

Vorrek finally moved.

He uncoiled his chain and swung it with shocking force. The chain tore through the air like a living serpent. Erian dodged but the chain struck a stone pillar behind him, splitting it. The cavern shook. Dust fell from above.

Vorrek advanced. Erian raised his arm to defend but Vorrek swept the chain low. It wrapped around Erian’s ankle and yanked him off balance. Erian hit the ground with a sharp breath. The chain tightened. Enchanted runes pulsed with energy that numbed his leg.

Rolan shouted and ran toward them but Vorrek snapped the chain outward. A shockwave pushed Rolan back, knocking him to the ground. Jana attempted to flank Vorrek but he anticipated her and lashed the chain upward, blocking her path.

Erian fought to stay conscious. The chain’s numbing effect spread quickly. He reached for his satchel and pulled a mana blade shard. Not a weapon but a small emergency tool used to cut bindings. He struck the chain near his ankle. The blade sparked. The chain loosened slightly. Vorrek noticed and pulled back before Erian fully freed himself.

“You’re more persistent than I expected,” Vorrek said. “But persistence won’t save your system.”

Erian steadied his breath. “The system will survive. You won’t.”

Vorrek’s expression shifted. Calm to sharp. He swung the chain in a wide arc. Erian ducked just in time. The chain cut through a support beam. Wood splintered. A portion of the cavern ceiling groaned.

Selin shouted. “If that beam collapses the whole cavern could fall.”

Vorrek smiled. “Then consider it an inconvenience.”

He swung again. This time Daris interfered. He hurled a rune slip that struck the chain. A burst of light erupted. The chain’s enchantment flickered. Vorrek snarled. He had not expected someone to counter his main weapon.

Rolan seized the opening and charged. His spear struck Vorrek’s side but barely dented his armor. Vorrek retaliated with a backhanded strike that knocked Rolan to his knees.

Jana moved next. She slid behind Vorrek and kicked the back of his leg. The blow staggered him. Selin used the moment to throw a weighted rope that bound Vorrek’s arm briefly. Only briefly. He snapped it with brute force.

The cavern trembled again. Stones cracked. Dust filled the air. Several beasts cried in fear.

Erian rose despite the numbness in his leg. He studied the structure around them. The cavern’s central support beam was damaged. A collapse was imminent.

That gave him an idea.

Vorrek towered in the center of the cavern. He had reach, strength, and armor. But the cavern did not.

Erian called out to Daris. “Strike the beam. The one behind Vorrek.”

Daris understood instantly. He threw a destabilization rune. It struck the cracked support beam. The rune activated with a low hum.

Vorrek glanced behind him.

The beam shattered.

A massive stone slab broke free from the ceiling. Vorrek dove aside, narrowly escaping the collapse. The slab crushed crates, tables, and several of his enchanted tools. The cavern shook violently. Cracks crawled across the walls.

Erian shouted, “Everyone out. Now.”

Selin guided the beasts toward the tunnel. Rolan supported Jana as they moved. Daris stabilized the exit path with quick rune work. The cavern roared as more stone fell.

Vorrek rose from the ground, covered in dust but still furious. He glared at Erian. “This is not over.”

Erian met his gaze. “No. It isn’t.”

Vorrek fled through a side tunnel that vanished behind collapsing debris. Erian moved with the team, ensuring all beasts reached the exit. The cavern collapsed fully behind them in a final rumble.

Outside under moonlight the beasts gathered at the ridge, free but trembling.

The Hollow was gone.

But so was Vorrek, escaping deeper into the frontier.

Erian steadied himself. The fight had only paused.

The real confrontation would come soon.

In a kingdom where magical beasts power agriculture, commerce, security, and adventuring, the entire beast trade is slowly collapsing into chaos. Illegal breeders, underground fighting pits, and cross-border smugglers hunt rare species for profit. Noble families secretly buy forbidden battle pets. Ecosystems are breaking down as captured beasts vanish from their natural habitats.

To stop the crisis, the crown appoints Erian Vale, a data-driven market analyst, as the Ecological Inspector-General of the Beast Trade Authority. His mission is to rebuild the entire industry through ecological rules, legal breeding standards, traceable arcane chips, and transparent market systems. But every reform threatens powerful black-market syndicates who have grown rich on illegal beast trading. They respond with sabotage, misinformation, and violence.

Erian must expose the underground networks, rescue abused creatures, audit corrupt breeding centers, and protect the kingdom’s fragile ecosystems. To win, he must turn governance into a weapon and create the world’s first regulated Magical Beast Economy. The fight is not only for the beasts but for the future of the kingdom itself.
