Night settled over the capital as lanterns lit the palace courtyard. Guards in polished armor lined the path leading to the Hall of the Crest. The palace walls gleamed under moonlight. Every step echoed softly across marble floors.
Erian and the team walked behind Mira. Their presence drew quiet attention from guards who recognized the Authority insignia. Few inspectors were summoned directly by the crown. Even fewer after exposing a noble of Wynthorne’s influence.
Inside the hall the air carried a subtle scent of incense. The walls displayed murals of ancient beast guardians and royal founders. At the far end near an elevated platform stood Queen Aradis Velloria. Her presence was calm and commanding. She wore simple robes rather than ceremonial ones. That alone signaled urgency.
She gestured for them to approach.
“Inspector Vale,” she said. “Your work has reached us faster than expected.”
Erian bowed respectfully. “Your Majesty. The frontier faced collapse. We only did what was necessary.”
The queen studied him carefully. “I have read Mira’s report. And the council’s reaction. Wynthorne’s betrayal cuts deep. But it is the network behind him that concerns me most.”
Mira stepped forward. “Your Majesty, we believe Vorrek was only one head of a larger structure. We found attempts to breach the registry last night. Someone sought to erase lineage records connected to the black market.”
The queen nodded slowly. “The corruption runs through the roots of our trade. Removing Wynthorne and Vorrek is only the beginning.”
She turned to Erian. “Your proposal for reform is bold. And it will disrupt long standing systems. Some guilds will resist. Some nobles will resist. You understand this.”
“I do,” Erian said. “But without change we repeat the same failures. The frontier will fracture again. The ecosystems will collapse one by one.”
The queen’s expression softened slightly. “You speak like someone who has felt the forest’s pulse. My advisors say you fought alongside rangers. Freed beasts. Faced dangers usually reserved for battlemages.”
Erian lowered his gaze. “Beasts deserve guardians, not chains.”
Rolan, standing behind him, muttered quietly, “And our inspector insists on being one.”
The queen almost smiled. “So it seems.”
She walked slowly across the hall. “I have decided to give you complete authority to implement the reforms. The Beast Trade System will undergo full restructuring under your direction. You will lead the new Ecological Compliance Division.”
Mira inhaled sharply. Selin’s eyes widened. Daris nearly dropped his notes.
Erian remained composed though the weight of the decision settled heavily on him. “Your Majesty, I will not fail.”
“I know,” the queen said. “However, your greatest challenge is yet to come.”
She handed him a sealed scroll. The crest on the wax belonged not to the council but to the Royal Intelligence Office.
“Inside,” the queen continued, “you will find intercepted communication between unknown parties operating in the western provinces. They reference Vorrek’s collapse. And a name we have not heard before.”
Erian broke the seal gently and read the message. His expression tightened.
Selin asked, “What is it?”
Erian lifted his eyes. “A new title. One the black market seems to follow.”
Jana stepped forward. “Another boss?”
Erian read the last line again. “They call him the Chain Broker.”
Rolan muttered, “That sounds worse than Vorrek.”
The queen added, “Our intelligence suggests this figure coordinates multiple smuggling rings. Wynthorne’s fall has created a vacuum. The Chain Broker may seize control.”
Mira frowned. “Do we know who he is?”
“No,” the queen said. “Only that he has influence far beyond Vorrek. And he wants the beast economy destabilized so he can rebuild it in the shadows.”
Erian folded the scroll. “Then the frontier isn’t the only battlefield anymore.”
“No,” the queen replied. “Your reforms will shake his foundation. That is why he will come for you.”
The hall fell silent.
The queen spoke once more. “Inspector Vale. You brought truth from the frontier. Now bring stability to the kingdom. And be prepared. The black market has lost its chains. But its architects are still at work.”
Erian bowed again. “We’ll be ready.”
Outside the palace the night breeze felt colder. The city lanterns flickered softly along the streets.
Rolan spoke first. “Chain Broker. Whoever he is, we’ll find him.”
Jana smirked. “And break every deal he ever made.”
Selin looked toward the northern sky. “But first we finish repairing the frontier.”
Daris added, “And implement the new Arcane-ID system.”
Erian walked ahead of them, scroll in hand.
Vorrek was only the beginning.
The next battle would pit them against a mastermind hidden behind the empire of illegal beasts.
And the kingdom had just placed its fragile future in Erian’s hands.
