As they settled down, she informed the children that today they would be continuing to learn the Ancient Saga, the legend that had been passed down orally as the founding legend of their kingdom before eventually being transcribed and preserved. Many scholars nowadays debated on whether or not the long poem was actual history or just a myth. While magic did remain in small amounts of families, dragons had long since vanished from this world. Returning her attention to the six children now seated at their desks in front of her, she looked at their gleaming eyes and smiling faces, and hoped that she could guide these children into a life of peace and certainty.
“Now children, let us continue from where we left off last night. Where was I? Oh yes I remember now.”
With that she settled into the rocking chair she kept near her podium and using the thumps of the chair to get into a steady rhythm, she began reciting the poem by memory as they had originally done in the days of old. She went back a couple lines as the children had been nodding off and she did not want them to miss any of it. Eventually she would have them memorize the entire thing but for now just knowing about it would suffice. Her chair rocking at the pace she wanted, she started the first part of the Ancient Saga, her smooth voice carefully delivering the words:
Many wondered who the One would be,
This destined person so wrapped in mystery.
Years passed with no hint in sight,
Of the One who’d battle the destined fight.
Little did they know that the one foreseen,
Was a young village girl, still a teen.
Her natural gift was to control the weather,
So rain or shine depended on her temper.
Hence she was taught from a small age,
To control her emotions, dampen her joy and rage.
As the years went by her power grew,
But so did her mind which was quick to think things through.
For little did her fellow townsman know,
But the girl had a secret friend below.
When she was given some time off from her work,
She’d travel to her secret alcove near the brook.
There in that little hideaway,
The girl would sneak away and play.
For there nestled deep in that wood,
Was where the most regal dragon stood.
