Arcane Money Laundering Investigator

Episode 13

Episode 13

Nov 27, 2025

Eiden stood at the edge of the lower canal district where the stonework grew older and the air turned colder. Brann and Elira flanked him, both tense as they stared down a narrow stairway that disappeared beneath the streets. The steps descended toward the oldest structure in the capital: the subterranean mana canals, a network built centuries ago to distribute raw mana before modern reservoirs and refined conduits replaced it.

According to the broken agent’s final words, the Curator’s next anchor was being crafted here. Deep underground. In a place where old magic still slept in the walls and where oversight had not existed for generations.

Brann took a slow breath Are we certain this is the entrance
Eiden nodded The charm resonates every time I step toward the stairs. The anchor is below
Elira frowned And the Curator
Eiden said quietly The Curator always stays near their anchor until it stabilizes

They descended the steps. The stone corridor opened into a wide chamber lit by old crystal torches. The crystals flickered unevenly their ancient enchantments long untended. Large pipes ran along the walls carrying cold mana streams. The air hummed with low vibrations like a pulse beating beneath the surface of the city.

Eiden activated trace sight. Frost residue clung to certain pipes like frost-bitten roots. The Curator’s network passed through here. The residue was fresh, strong.

Elira frowned They move quickly. The Curator had only hours to reposition
Eiden nodded They knew we would follow. They want to finish the next anchor before we reach them

They marched deeper into the subterranean passages. The tunnels gradually widened until they were large enough for entire wagons to pass through. Ancient runes glowed faintly on the ceiling. The mana streams in the pipes grew louder.

Brann whispered This place is alive
Eiden nodded It always has been. The whole city runs on these veins. Mana flows up from these channels into the reservoirs above
Elira shivered And the Curator wants to tap directly into the foundation
Eiden tightened his grip on the charm If they stabilize an anchor down here, the entire capital’s mana heart becomes theirs

They reached a massive iron gate. The cold residue around it swirled like smoke. It was locked by old mechanical latches rather than spells, likely because spells behaved unpredictably in these old channels.

Brann cracked his knuckles Allow me
He slammed his shield into the gate. Dust fell. The gate shook violently. On the third strike it broke open.

Beyond the gate was a cavernous chamber filled with old machinery. Huge gears, water wheels enchanted with mana absorption, pipes the size of trees. The machinery had not moved in decades, yet some pipes vibrated with faint energy.

Eiden scanned the chamber. The charm pulsed rapidly.

Elira looked around This is where the old city engineers regulated mana before the modern system existed
Brann rubbed his arm And now the Curator wants to revive it
Eiden whispered They want a foundation that cannot be removed. Something deeper than the Finance Court

Then he saw it.

At the far end of the chamber a structure glowed softly blue. A crystal ring suspended in the air, rotating slowly above an ancient control console. Mana lines connected it to the surrounding pipes. Frost residue swirled around it like a faint storm.

The third anchor.

Elira breathed This one is almost finished
Brann lowered his stance The Curator will be close
Eiden stepped toward the glowing structure. As he approached the charm trembled so violently he almost dropped it. The anchor resonated with the charm’s remaining energy.

Suddenly footsteps echoed from the shadows.

Eiden froze.

A figure emerged slowly from behind the old machinery. Not masked. Not cloaked. A woman in dark robes, her hair white with streaks of blue mana, her eyes glowing faintly with cold light.

Elira whispered That is not a puppet
Brann tightened his grip That is high command

The woman smiled calmly Investigator Cross. I wondered when you would arrive
Eiden stared Who are you
The woman stopped several paces away I am Veyra Lys. One of the Curator’s architects. I oversee network integration. This anchor is my work

Eiden stepped forward You are manipulating thousands
Veyra chuckled Manipulation is a strong word. Influence is better. Control is necessary. The Curator’s purpose is pure
Elira snapped You steal memories
Veyra replied We remove obstacles
Brann growled You erase people
Veyra answered We correct them
Eiden glared You call that correction
Veyra smiled again Calm. Too calm. Vision requires sacrifice Investigator. The kingdom runs on unstable foundations. Guilds fight. Nobles hoard. The Crown hesitates. We bring order

Eiden raised the charm. Veyra’s eyes flickered.

Ah she said You brought the resonance key
Eiden frowned Key
Veyra nodded That charm connects to the entire network. It was created as a regulator’s remote extension. You severed it from its host but it still carries the original frequencies
Elira whispered So the Curator needs it
Veyra nodded They need it to align the final anchor. Without it the network will never stabilize

Eiden held the charm tighter Then I am keeping it
Veyra sighed A pity Then you leave me no choice

She raised her hand. Frost spirals erupted. The chamber trembled.

Brann leaped forward shield raised. Elira cast a dampening veil that weakened incoming spells. Eiden moved sideways letting the charm absorb part of the frost spiral.

Veyra narrowed her eyes Impressive. The charm still functions
Eiden called out You cannot finish the anchor without it
Veyra smiled But I can take it from you

She moved faster than any puppet. Her frost magic carved through machinery like paper. Pipes burst. Mana streams hissed into the air turning into cold vapor.

Brann charged blocking her path. She flicked her wrist. A force wave threw him backwards into a metal beam.

Elira cast a binding circle. Veyra shattered it with a gesture.

Eiden held the charm up. It glowed blindingly. Veyra hissed and shielded her eyes.

He rushed toward the anchor. If he could destabilize it—

Veyra’s voice boomed Stop

Frost chains erupted from the floor grabbing Eiden’s legs. He hit the ground hard. The charm rolled across the floor. Veyra’s eyes widened as she reached for it.

Elira shot a disruption spell from across the chamber. It struck Veyra’s arm. She staggered. The charm bounced away.

Eiden freed one leg and lunged forward grabbing it before it slid into a mana drain.

Veyra snarled Give it to me
Eiden shouted Brann now

Brann rose bruised but still strong. He slammed his shield into a pillar. The pillar collapsed. The falling debris crashed between Veyra and the anchor, blocking her line of sight.

Eiden pressed the charm against the anchor.

Veyra screamed Stop

The anchor pulse shrieked as resonance cracked through it.

The chamber shook violently. Pipes burst. Machinery groaned.

Elira yelled The anchor is failing
Brann shouted Then we need to go now

Eiden forced more of the charm’s resonance into the anchor. Cracks spread across the crystal ring until it shattered in a burst of cold light.

Veyra’s scream echoed through the chamber. Her mana wavered like a candle in the wind.

Eiden stumbled back. Brann grabbed him. Elira led them toward the exit.

The machinery collapsed behind them. Frost residue exploded outward in violent bursts.

They ran through the tunnels until the tremors faded.

Outside, beneath the night sky, Eiden finally breathed again.

Brann spat on the ground That was insane
Elira gasped But we did it
Eiden stared at the charm Now the Curator has only one anchor left

And they would do anything to protect it.

Anything.
