Arcane Money Laundering Investigator

Episode 17

Episode 17

Nov 27, 2025

The Curator lay motionless on the reinforced cot inside the Bureau holding chamber. His breathing was shallow and uneven. His aura, once sharp and cold as frost steel, now flickered like a dying candle. Eiden watched from behind the observation window while Brann and Elira waited beside him. Director Myles stood with arms folded, her expression carved from stone.

We stabilized his vitals Myles said quietly but whatever echo is still inside him fights back
Eiden nodded The anchor collapse forced every obedience spell fragment back through his mind. That should have destroyed any ability he had left
Brann crossed his arms But it did not
Elira finished softly Because something else is sustaining him
Myles turned to Eiden The fifth node
Eiden looked down at his gloved hands The Curator was never the root of the network. He was the coordinator. Someone else built the foundation
Elira frowned The Architect
Eiden nodded The one who designed the original cognitive structure. The prototype for the regulator sphere. The one who hid the charm in plain sight. The one who began it all decades ago
Brann muttered Then the Curator was only a lieutenant

Myles adjusted a scroll on the wall The Curator spoke about stability and correction as if those ideas came from someone else. He believed in a philosophy
Eiden added Which means someone taught him

The chamber lights dimmed slightly as mana currents shifted. Since the anchors were broken, the capital’s mana system was still recalibrating. Every few minutes a ripple passed through the conduits.

Elira shivered slightly It feels like the city is breathing wrong
Eiden replied The city is waking up from a long sleep

Myles pointed toward the unconscious Curator He has been whispering the same words repeatedly
Eiden leaned closer What words
Myles recited faintly The Core remembers

Brann raised an eyebrow That sounds like something a cultist would chant
Elira shook her head Or someone trying to protect a secret
Eiden felt a hollow weight in his chest The fifth node is not an anchor. It is a core
Myles stiffened A root system
A nexus Eiden added It may not be physical
Brann frowned Then what
Eiden breathed slowly Think about the network elasticity how quickly spells reformed how widespread the control was
Elira’s eyes widened You think the fifth node is a living host
Eiden nodded A mind. A person connected to the network. Someone with the capability to hold multiple spell anchors at once
Brann looked sick A human anchor
Myles whispered That would explain everything

Eiden stared at the observation glass The Curator is a strategist. A coordinator. But not the origin. Someone else has been absorbing the residual strain every time an anchor destabilized
Brann cursed under his breath But how do we find someone like that
Eiden closed his eyes and let trace sight flow through him. He expected nothing. But something answered. Very faint. A thread. A whisper of residue. Familiar frost patterns mixed with something older.

Elira watched his face What do you see
Eiden opened his eyes slowly Someone who has been connected since before the Curator. Someone deeper than the network Someone the kingdom has already forgotten
Myles stepped closer Investigator Cross Do you have a lead
Eiden nodded A name
Brann leaned forward Who
Eiden whispered The original regulator engineer

Elira gasped But they vanished decades ago
Eiden replied They did not vanish
They were hidden

Myles narrowed her eyes Where
Eiden stared at the unconscious Curator The Curator holds the thread. We must access what remains in his mind
Brann shook his head That is dangerous
Elira warned His memories are collapsing. If we enter
Eiden finished We might collapse with them

Myles thought for a long moment before nodding Prepare a controlled entry. We will use memory projection chambers. If the fifth node exists inside the Curator’s memories we will find it
Eiden turned to Elira and Brann You two stay outside
Brann frowned No
Elira shook her head Absolutely not
Eiden said firmly I am the only one with trained trace sight for deep memory residue
Brann grunted That is exactly why you should not go alone
Elira added If the Curator’s mind collapses, you will need someone to pull you out
Myles sighed Then all three of you enter
Eiden stared Director that breaks every protocol
Myles replied This is not protocol. This is survival

She placed a hand on Eiden’s shoulder You find this fifth node. For the kingdom

Eiden nodded

Minutes later, the projection chamber hummed to life. Brann, Elira, and Eiden stood in a circle around the memory locus crystal. The Curator lay strapped to a linked cot, his aura feeding faint signals into the crystal.

Elira took a breath Ready
Brann muttered No but let us do it
Eiden closed his eyes and allowed the crystal to pull him inward

The world dissolved.

When the vision formed, Eiden stood inside a vast snow field illuminated by silver light. Memories hung in the air like floating shards. Whispering voices drifted across the sky.

Brann and Elira appeared beside him.

Elira whispered We are inside his mind
Brann looked around Where is he
Eiden walked forward scanning the residue The Curator is not important
We are looking for the Architect

Then they saw it—a figure in the distance, standing in frost wind. Not the Curator. Taller. Older. Radiating an aura so deep it bent the memory shards around it like gravity.

The figure turned slowly.

Their eyes opened.

Not cold.

But completely empty.

A voice echoed through the realm You should not have entered

Eiden felt the air freeze.

Brann stepped back What is that
Elira whispered That is not a memory
Eiden said quietly
No
That is the fifth node

The figure raised a hand
And the memory realm itself cracked.
