The moment we started running, Felix's frown started furrowing deeper. He clearly had something on his mind.
And in a moment my suspicions were confirmed when he looked at me, " How about I split up and meet up with you later? I can distract them from all of you that way. " He yelled as we ran through the woods.
If he hadn't been by my side I almost wouldn't have caught the last line that he mumbled to himself, " or maybe I shouldn't even come back. "
My eyes widened as I realised something. Sure I was feeling bad about risking the safety of my pack for a random wolf that we found but how would he have felt, being the cause of everything?
Now placing my finger on the emotion, guilt was all over his expressions as he continued to frown.
" Do you want to die? " I yelled back at him as he curved around a tree that came in our path and joined my side again. " What? " He asked evidently confused by my anger.
" The last time you faced them, you almost died, genius! And putting that aside the one they're after is you! You must be dumb if you want to walk into their hands -or paws. " I added as I rolled my eyes.
Taken aback by my annoyance, he gave me a confused but curious glance as he followed me without any further questions.
I looked back to get a visual of how far the pursuers were behind us and was shocked to see that in just a few sprints they would be at our heels. " How? " I gaped at Felix as he returned my worried glance.
" I don't know. That's what caught me off guard the first time too. There are just things about them that are just... freakishly inhumane, even for a werewolf! " He yelled back as we parted once more.
" Faster!! " I growled at my pack and everyone fired off their do or die mode as they increased their pace to the level that they tested their limits.
But knowing that this wouldn't be enough, I slowed down as I took in the positions of the wolves behind us.
On detecting what I was planning to do, Felix matched my pace as he fell back too. I shot him a look that screamed, " Why? "
But he didn't even need to say a word. One look into his eyes would tell anyone that he wasn't willing to let me fight alone.
Since it wasn't just his fight anymore, he wasn't going to let anything happen to the ones that got roped into it, meaning us.
Nodding to him as if giving him a mark, I stopped as I lunged at the wolf that sped past me. Sinking my teeth and claws into the thick coat as I overpowered him.
My mind dug up the conversation from yesterday.
" Wait. Why did you have to 'borrow' food, when you could just hunt instead? " Felix had inquired during our conversation, his eyes glistening in curiosity.
I flushed under his stare as I fiddled with my hands trying to explain, " Um... I don't really like hunting. Hurting animals is something that bugs me... "
" Kinda ironic for a Werewolf Alpha, don't you think? " I laughed dryly as I looked at him.
" No. Not really. That's just because it's you, with your kindness I'm not surprised. " He said softly with a warm smile that fluttered my insides. It was nice that he understood what I felt.
This mentality of mine led to hesitation in situations like these.
A strong growl sounded from Felix and it was all I needed to clear my head. This was self-defence. Protecting is different from hunting, I reminded myself.
Remember what one moment of hesitation can do to you. I told myself as I pushed the wolf that was in my grip down and growled at him.
The element of surprise now no more, lead to the other wolves that had witnessed this, falling back too as they started to lunge at me.
Standing my ground, I pushed the wolf aside as he hit a tree with a thud. I glanced at him hoping that he would sink down in defeat.
Well, it doesn't hurt to dream, I thought as I sprinted again in zig zags, the moment I saw him wobble back on his feet.
Our motive was to slow them down, not take them out, so I charged into the nearest wolf I could find, growling and snapping as I clawed at it. This one was bigger and boy was he intimidating as he bared his fangs. Dodging correctly in time, I avoided his claws that sliced the air beside me.
I turned mid dodge to claw him and suddenly Felix appeared, helping me attack the wolf together.
The wounded wolf that was now pushed to a side winced in pain as he tried to get up and tail us, effectively slowing down the chase.
Soon it became a cycle as we joined the pack for a while and separated from them while we slowed the others down.
" You're not too bad. " I grinned at Felix as he ran beside me. " You're not too bad yourself. " He said with a chuckle.
Without knowing it, I had spoken too soon, when the few others that were behind us regrouped to solely attack Felix and me.
" We'll rendezvous at our spot. " I yelled just loud enough for the pack to hear as I fell back to fend off the four wolves that were charging to us. Two of them headed for the pack but I didn't worry knowing that the pack could very well defend themselves even without me around.
It was almost like we were a bonus with the prize. The prize that they were after being Felix and the rest of us being the compensatory bonus.
It was almost as if their mentality changed from Get-Felix to The-More-The-Merrier, which was very concerning at this point.
My thoughts were interrupted harshly as I felt a massive force knock me down out of the blue.
