His Howl That Moonlit Night

Desensitise.

Desensitise.

Dec 02, 2025

My head felt heavy as I hit the ground with a low thud. Knowing that I would be as good as dead if I lay there any longer, I tried getting back onto my feet as I looked at the one who collided with me, the impact that led to my falling.

And the first thing my brain registered was his eyes.

They were the same bloodshot red.

The same vein-popping texture and last of all, the one that sent chills down my spine was the stare that reeked of complete hatred.

The scene seemed too real. It was almost like my nightmare had popped out into reality.

The similar setting made my vision blurry as I saw the wolf approach me while I was sprawled on the ground.

The screams followed and even though I was positive that it was just my mind playing tricks on me, they seemed too real for my liking.

Nearly two feet away, the wolf bared its canines ready to attack me as I lay there frozen. And as if the silent screams in my head went through to him, Felix jumped out of nowhere and sank his teeth into the wolf.

Without giving the wolf a chance to react, Felix lashed out at him till the wolf was writhing in pain.

" Are you alright? " He asked as he ran up to me, his voice dripping with concern as he panted for air in the middle. I nodded with a frown and mumbled a heartfelt thank you as I got up with his help.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't impressed when I spotted two of the wolves that had come behind us, now lying motionless on the ground thanks to Felix.

Realising that that made only three of them, I looked around frantically trying to spot the last one. But it seemed like it had disappeared into thin air.

" Come on. Let's get back to the rest of them. There's still a few of these wolves that are unaccountable for. " I said as I shook myself to invigorate my body again.

...

" What is it? " He asked when he glanced at me for the tenth time in the last two minutes since we started running again. Even though it was quite unsettling the way he looked at me with so much genuine concern, I'd say that I didn't completely hate it.

Assuming that he referred to what was on my mind I voiced out my concern.

" These wolves that we just fought. They seemed to fatigue at the same rate as us. But what's troubling me is their healing rate. That's nothing like anything I've ever seen before. " I said as I shook my head.

Felix nodded and replied, " The first time they attacked me, I took quite a few of them down while escaping from them but no matter what they just kept coming back. And soon I was the one that was weary and exhausted and it gave them an eight vs one a pretty big advantage. "

Just as he stated that we arrived at the border to the thickest part of the woods. Felix's eyes widened as he turned to me and asked, " But, how? "

I laughed as I asked him to stay close to me as I led the way.

What he was referring to was the scent. The moment we had gotten to the dense part it was obvious.

The most essential thing that we wolves used for hunting a particular prey was its scent. So the best way to throw off a predator was to desensitise them, which was exactly what the pack had done.

These parts were our territory. We knew them so well that we had every route etched in our brains.

Using this to their advantage the pack had split up and covered most of the area multiple times to throw the scent off.

If we weren't able to hide it, it was best to distract them with it. Brilliant, I thought, extremely proud of them.

I charged through the woods, curving through the paths and narrowly missing trees but not before making sure I had done a few rounds too, to throw off our scent.

Finally coming to a halt, I glanced at Felix and pointed to the grassy ground near the roots of one of the trees in the area. " Let's go. " I said.
